FYI (for newbies): It is much easier to use a needle to weed with the smaller/thinner tip than most purchased weeders have. Simply empty the led from a mechanical pencil. Push a needle up into the opening while pressing the top (or whatever “button” your precise mechanical pencil has that releases the led) and once inserted, release the “button.” Some I’ve had to hot glue just a tiny amount to keep the needle in place. Now you have a “weeder” that cost under $1 to make & bonus- the eraser side is great for picking up tiny scrap pieces on the table
That was great! A lot of very useful information and tips. I love the tip of using a lint brush to hold the cup in place! I will definitely be using that tip!
This is a good video. I was curious how to make tumblers with etching. These are really HUGH seller at craft fairs. After watching video, I definitely am going to try this!!!!😍
2 questions: 1. Have you ever tried etching with ferric acid? 2. Would a hair dryer work the same as a heat gun but just heat it up longer? Thank you for your detailed videos!! Always love them
Here is the link to one of my etching tutorials, jennifermaker.com/etched-stainless-steel-tumbler/ and I haven't tried a hair dryer so I can't say for sure that would produce enough heat 💗
I find the magic eraser works well on on these projects. Doesn't scratch and you can scrub if needed. :) I use a heat gun for both kinds of tumblers but didn't have one I could set to a particular temperature until recently. I will try your setting next time I make one!
@@JenniferMaker Always glad to help! Thanks for always making great tutorials! Been struggling with my card mat recently. You can do other things to the tumbler after you etch. Folks have been using Citristrip for years to strip their tumblers of all powder coating so they can paint or glitter or epoxy them, for example. :)
I followed this method and did a test patch on the bottom of a tumbler. I allowed the citrstrip to sit on this test patch for 50 minutes and the paint came right off the tumbler. So I cut my actual template and applied it to the face of the tumbler and let the citristrip sit for 50 minutes. At that point, the paint wouldn't come off, so I allowed the citristrip to sit for 10 more minutes, but still the paint wouldn't come off. What do you do in this case? Let it sit longer or just give up and try another tumbler? Once I peeled off my template, the paint was slightly etched looking, but it still wouldn't come off. So I was left with a tumbler that had a tone-on-tone effect.

Does anyone know if etching the handle on a yeti mugs a bad idea or if there’s a specific way to do it I can’t find a single video about etching handles on mugs or any sort of handle action on mugs. Love watching Jennifer‘s videos even if I’m not doing a project. It’s very Stepford wives but in a comforting way.

Is this technique temperature sensitive..like for example can I work outside in the cold winter months? I don’t have a safe space in my small house where I’m away from kids and pets but it gets very cold here in the winter months
Hi Jennifer, thank you for your tutorials. They are always very informative. I have some RTIC tumblers and tried this method on them. You mentioned not to leave the citristripe on longer than 1.5 hours as the vinyl wrinkled. However, I had to leave the citristrip on these tumblers for about 2.5 hours. I used Oracle 651 vinyl and it really held up well. I tried the method using the heat gun and unfortunately, the vinyl almost melted and I had a real mess on my hands. I think I got the tin foil that was on top to hot and it melted the vinyl. Are there tumblers that you can recommend that won't take 2.5 hours to etch? TIA
Hi Jennifer, Hoping I can trouble you with a question. I’ve done my fair share of etching tumblers with citristrip with fairly good success. However, I have NOT been able to successfully etch a light colored Yeti yet and I’ve damaged many. I’ve left the citristip on for times varying from 50 minutes to several hours to overnight and even tried the head gun with no success. I’ve just watched your video and am curious if you’ve been successful etching any light colored Yetis and what the “sweet” time was at which you found them to be most successful? Thank you very much in advance.

@@JenniferMaker I understand that, thank you for your response. Was just curious if you had noted the successful time the Yeti tumbler took you to achieve etching success. Thanks!
A friend was kind enough to bring me some Citristrip when she came to visit us in Toronto. There is some other brand here and no way of knowing if it would work. I got great results with the Citristrip . I need some advice. The design I did on one side is a huge stylized firefly. I put rhinestones on the glowing abdomen part and I’m wondering does anyone think it will look unfinished if I leave most of it including the wings just the plain etched out look with the glowing butt part all glittery rhinestones with some that glow in the dark?
After the cups are done, I noticed you said not quite dishwasher safe. With hand washing and good care, how long should the designs on the tumblers last? Will the powder coating continue to come off from around the design after awhile of use?
Is it okay to use Cricut Smart Vinyl? I've been waiting for this video so I can try it. I have several I need to make for our family party. Thanks for the video.
Great video but I’m having trouble with the vinyl I’m not sure if it’s the quality what type and brand of adhesive works best for the stencil? I tried permanent adhesive from siser. I had trouble with it tearing in the delicate areas of the design when trying to remove the citririp.
Vinyl does come in different qualities. Dollar Tree vinyl is thin and tears easy. Cricut permanent vinyl is what was use here. jennifermaker.com/etch-tumblers-with-citristrip/
Hi. I’m new to cricut. And I’m wondering if you can use permanent vinyls for these kinds of tumblers? As I want to make some designs for these to sell. And will the vinyls come off of these tumblers? Or can we use iron on vinyls? Thank you.
Yes, you can use permanent vinyls for tumblers, and they are generally recommended for this type of project. Specifically, Oracle 651 is a popular choice because it is a permanent outdoor vinyl that tends to adhere well to smooth surfaces like tumblers. However, it's important to note that even permanent vinyls may eventually come off, especially if the tumbler is frequently washed in a dishwasher. Hand washing is recommended to prolong the life of the vinyl. As for iron-on vinyls (also known as heat transfer vinyl or HTV), they are not typically recommended for tumblers. Some people have tried using HTV on mugs and tumblers, but the results are often inconsistent. The vinyl may not adhere well or may come off after a few washes. Additionally, the surface of the tumbler needs to be fairly porous for the HTV to melt into it, which is not usually the case with most tumblers.

I’ve used the citristrip the only problem I had was small pieces of vinyl moving or coming off like In a letter & it did take a while for it to lift powder coating
I've seen some other youtubers who let the vinyl cure on the tumbler overnight before applying the citristrip, have you tried this, and if so, do you see any benefits?
Interesting, it gives a better finish than using a laser engraver, and zero electricity, the downside is that i have to discard the vinyl, for bulk is not that effective, but it's a nice way of giving a vinyl cutter another use
Anyone have the Citristrip bleed under your stencil? I've done it twice on a test tumbler (wrap in foil with heat gun method) and it bled both times. I cleaned with rubbing alcohol, used Cricut vinyl, and made sure I pressed the stencil down around every edge. I really want this to work. What am I doing wrong?
Not sure if this was covered as I can't watch this now, but I just tried this basic project and the cricut vinyl is all curled up at the edges. What should I have used for vinyl? Thanks.
@@JenniferMaker I followed directions using products listed here. I have now trashed two tumblers because the citristrip gets under the stencil and wrecks everything. I secured the stencil as best I could and even used heat on the 2nd one thinking it would adhere better. Nope. It's junk. I have to idea what to do with this.
I can see that you're following Adrienne Reisinger m2c1 Designs technique. She was the one who discovered this method with the Citristrip ! I have seen other citristrip videos, and they mention m2c1 Designs because is Her method.

I’ve purchased your sublimation book as well. I hope you keep doing what you love and sharing to us. You are amazing and a blessing to us. You made our lives easier with your videos. God bless you more and to your team. ❤
I was wondering if you could do the aluminum foil with the heat for both?
Yes, but I found that glossy tumblers like Civago Gloss and Gradient Tumblers worked better with the second technique described, which also requires a Heat Gun and Aluminum Foil. jennifermaker.com/etch-tumblers-with-citristrip/
@@JenniferMaker Omg!! Thank you so much for the great response time. That goes to show the time, effort and love put into your channel. I wish you continued success. Many blessings.
I’ve used the citristrip the only problem I had was small pieces of vinyl moving or coming off like
In a letter & it did take a while for it to lift powder coating
Yes, it does take a while for sure!
My vinyl has bubbled up both times when I have tried this any tips on how to prevent that? i’m using cricut permanent vinyl. Thanks so much
You can see more information on the techniques here. jennifermaker.com/etch-tumblers-with-citristrip/
I've seen some other youtubers who let the vinyl cure on the tumbler overnight before applying the citristrip, have you tried this, and if so, do you see any benefits?
I have not tried it to give you a solid answer.
Is there ever a need to seal these with epoxy? Does the powder coating left around the design ever start to chip away?
So far it has help up with basic wear and tear.
Interesting, it gives a better finish than using a laser engraver, and zero electricity, the downside is that i have to discard the vinyl, for bulk is not that effective, but it's a nice way of giving a vinyl cutter another use
Yes, thanks for watching! ❤️
Thanks.
I used permanent vinyl. You can see the affiliate links in the materials list. jennifermaker.com/etch-tumblers-with-citristrip/
I like your tutorial.
Glad to hear that! 💗
I can see that you're following Adrienne Reisinger m2c1 Designs technique. She was the one who discovered this method with the Citristrip !
I have seen other citristrip videos, and they mention m2c1 Designs because is Her method.
Yes! Thank you!
Hi jennifer love your youtube videos, wonder if you can help as the web is very confusing. I live in the uk and all our card is graded in gsm not pounds like the USA, can you please tell me what 65lb card is in gsm, I want to make your Christmas Angel, but think my card is to thick. I think there must be many crafters out there that would love a conversion chart. many thanks kate
Just want Karen says -- go to Google and type in gsm to lbs and you'll get calculators you can use!
Thanks for the information
My pleasure -- always happy to help!

Hello from Clemson, SC
What about those gamecocks yesterday. Pretty impressive
Thank you for this video. It is very helpful! Do you leave the citristrip for 50 minutes before you use the heat gun on the glossy tumblers or can you just heat it right away? 😊
I would let it sit some.
Do you have instructions for a heat gun that has a maximum temp of 200° celcius or 392° Fahrenheit?
We only have the information that is in the blog post. jennifermaker.com/etch-tumblers-with-citristrip/ You can always ask in our group. They are very helpful. facebook.com/groups/cricutcraftersandmakers/
If I have multiple tumblers to work on, do I need new water in my bucket for each one? I'm assuming yes but hoping no.....
No, I don't think so, the bucket of water is more for rinsing the citristrip off rather than uncovering the design and washing the tumbler.💗
Help!! I let mine sit for over an hour. More like 1 1/2 and I cannot get this stuff to scrub off. I bought a yeti 😔 and now I think it’s wasted. Is there any way to salvage it?
have you tried using heat?🥰
Do you need to seal it after it’s finished stripping the powder coating?
Nope
No need for sealing!
Hi Jennifer. What font did you use for the mug with your name?
They are listed on the blog post. jennifermaker.com/etch-tumblers-with-citristrip/
Anyone else notice in the last few videos the hands do not look like Jennifer’s? Just wondering 🤷♀️

@@JenniferMaker I love it. Job Title: Jennifer Maker hand model! I want to do that job. Unfortunately I have ugly hands (not kidding)
Love this
I wonder if Citristrip would work on a Hydroflask
Yes, I believe they've been used with Citristrip. 😊🌻
Great Video! Thank you. Do you have a link to your silicon heat mat?

@@JenniferMaker thank you!
When removing the vinyl stencil did anyone pull up some color with it? The only was I can think to describe it is like speckled pieces of color came up leaving silver looking kinda like sprinkles of salt. Sorry not sure how to describe it.
We don’t have Citristrip in Australia, is there an equivalent that we might have here?
I do not know what is available in Australia.
Does anyone know if etching the handle on a yeti mugs a bad idea or if there’s a specific way to do it I can’t find a single video about etching handles on mugs or any sort of handle action on mugs
You can ask in the group for help with this. facebook.com/groups/cricutcraftersandmakers/
I wonder who’s hands those were making the tumblers because those were definitely not Jennifers hands L O L but definitely another great project

Have you tried this with stencil film too? Wondering what is better.
No I haven't, I'm sorry ❤️You could ask other crafters in my FB group, facebook.com/groups/cricutcraftersandmakers/
