Hey friends! Sorry in advance -- wrestling with some audio issues in this video 😫. If you're listening with earbuds, please use both of them! Some of the audio seems to only be coming out of one speaker. Working on fixing this for the next one. Thanks for being so patient with me and for all of the support! See you so soon with part 2! 💓
I used to feel so bad when I heard the stories of all the work your dad made you do when you were a teenager... But the fact you're so energetic as to finish a job like this goes to show how much it really pays off!!!
I've never been a big fan of decks, mostly because I grew up in the 70s and 80s, helping my Dad (who was a carpenter in summers, since he was a teacher during the school year) build decks, and they all kind of looked like your first deck. Lattice, very country kitsch kind of details, but this deck is so modern and so sleek that I now see it's a style thing to me, and not just an, "I hate decks," thing. Lovely work!
What a Massive Improvement!! I thought I liked the lattice until you replaced it lol. It's currently 1:34am and I've been watching your videos pretty much all day. I was going to go to sleep after this one but now I absolutely have to watch part 2 first!! Fabulous job Sam!!
For real, the first time we did it, it took 2 days. From then on we’ve rented a floor sander from Home Depot (a square sheet sander) and it takes about 2 hours for an 800 sqft deck.
OK, so, clearly I wrote that very early on in the video, the one we rented is kind of similar but I feel like the pads were twice the size. Also, our deck is stained, not painted.
I love the horizontal boards! Great looking design. Curious, with so much rotted wood, did you check the boards under the deck, that holds the deck up? Didn't see that in the video and just to mention that it might have been a better option to place the steps even with the door rather than centered. On the flip side, I really love ❤️ the quality job you did on the deck! It looks great! First time seeing you so definitely subscribing!
Thank you! Yes! I was able to climb under and check it all out - the structure was perfect! We centered the stairs cause the garage is in front of the door. Hard to see I the video, but now the steps open up to our whole yard! 😍
Did you consider replacing the boards with composite boards or something after the paint removal didn’t work? I’d imagine cost was the biggest reason to not do this perhaps? Love the videos on the house reno so far!!!
I like your design choices, Sam. The lattice had to go. It has a nice nostalgic look that belongs in coastal areas, but it looks rickety and untidy after a while. The revised deck looks solid and durable.
Sam, I had PTSD seeing that LOL. My wife and I had to gut part of our deck since the posts were dumped on railroad ties -> can't imagine why that was a bad idea. So we basically had to tear it all down and rebuild. It was exhausting so I feel for you. Great work. Now contact Vans and tell them they need to sponsor you! :)
Beautiful project. Great ideas💡. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to see the end result. I built a deck in Huntington, NY and another one in Hilton Head, SC. It's a lot of work. You are amazing. 🤗
This is Beautiful Example of A Lone Girl Remodeling & Building Deck Soooooooooo Beautiful Way 🤗🤗🤗👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌 Also This Deck Building Video like "Try Not To Tired" 😭😭😭🥵🥵🥵
Sam, what's this nonsense I keep hearing about bad audio?? Sounded good to me Homie!! Great job all around. You already know the side skirts topped it off. Not sure if you know but there's companies out there that will make you powder coated metal stair risers. I could 100% see you using those on this deck with some insane wood for treads. You can have as many made as you want to widen stairs as much as you ant. Hoping all is well Kid, Dirty Jersey out!!
It does look great, but I would have made the treads deeper so you get that nice lip over the riser. Gives them a bit more depth rather than looking like stacked boxes. But inspires me to look into re-doing the stairs to my front porch. They have been BUGGING me. But I need to decide on what I want to do regarding railing around my front porch. When I ripped them off I was in love with the more open look, but I don’t know. I have decisions to make for SURE.
Good job! Looks great. One little thing. You said you used 12 x 1 boards for the steps but I'm pretty sure those were 12 x 2s. Or else I want to know where you can buy 1" boards that thick!
Soooo I did the same thing with the deck on the house I just bought. I wanted semi transparent stain so bad that I sat and used and angle grinder on all of the boards definitely the fastest way I found to get the paint up and worth it! So stoked to see your finished deck 😍
Sam, the next time you complain about summer and it being too hot and too sunny, I'm gonna fly from County Kerry, Ireland to NY (L. Isl) and give you a piece of my mind in person!!!! 😂 We've had nothing but rain here since Oct 2021.....
There you a sweet girl! Just got to you tonight☹️ as always you make me so proud! Have a blessed night may the Lord bless you and keep you🩸❌⭕️❌⭕️🐶 Otis and me~Massachusetts
Awh, your audio was fine.. don’t stress. Just needed to put the volume up at the beginning.. it was absolutely fine and such a great job with the deck 🫶🏼
Hahaha - forgot to mention that! The house came with a hot tub, but we opted not to keep it. We will be putting an outdoor shower back in though once the deck is done!
Yeah, I was kind of bummed. All good! Now they’re sitting on a pressure treated footer on stone instead of grass. So, hopefully they’ll last a long time to come!
Nice job...love the way you finished the bottom of the deck. Can't wait to see it finished. Home Depot only twice in one day.... amateur. I'm sure we've gone at least 4 times in a day !
You’re a hot mess with power tools, a new deck attached to your own house! Woohoo! 💪🏻👧🏻 The deck looks amazing and it’s not even all done yet! In the RUclips world, that is 😆😍
Are you listening with only one earbud in? I'm watching back and realizing it sounds like it's only coming out of one speaker? Will have to look into this! Sorry about that!
@@diyhuntress Omg yes lol. My left earbud is broken... that explains it. But I've never had a problem with your videos with one earbud before? I'll try to find another pair of earbuds and rewatch. Thank you!
The deck and wrapping boards looks great but I'm wondering whether it was wise to put the bottom boards so close to the ground. Won't they rot or encourage termites?
Hard work. However, I like the urban European trend you used for the horizontal boards on your deck. I have seen it used on screens or featured walls. In your case, you could plant several things along the side of the deck, which would look nice in contrast to those horizontal boards. I also like that you carried the design to the stairs as well; nice. Oh, you probably can rent a wood steamer to help those warped boards get back into shape; not perfect, but better. Consider yourself privileged for having the Home Depot rental center. Because I live in a border city next to Mexico, our Home Depot has never had a rental center. They are afraid they would lose all the equipment through theft. There may be other rental places, but I don't know of them. For the most part, almost everyone will buy their equipment or borrow it from a true friend. I can't wait to see what you will do with the railings. Rich Blessings
Love the new look of the deck! The pressure washer you rented wasn’t powerful enough for the job. There was an MTM pressure washer in in of the Home Depot clips that would have worked so much better.
You're an absolute trojan worker. Unbelieveable. Such a huge undertaking on your own and fair play to you girl, you did a brilliant job. The deck is looking amazing and the new stairs and the surround is fabulous. Himself won't believe the changes when he gets back. You've earned a huge chunk of R&R now. Looking forward to seeing the next part. You're such an inspiration Sam.
I’m hoping to not store anything under there only cause we’re adding back the outdoor shower, but definitely keeping an access on the side of the deck!
Very nice job on the deck! Lot of hard work, and solid techniques. Plus you always have an enjoyable and informative editing style, composition for your shots, narration, photography, etc. Really pro-level videos! I think a lot of DIYers would attempt to salvage some parts of a deck that has rotten pieces here and there, given the prohibitive cost of lumber these days, and would find videos demonstrating the right ways to perform such techniques very useful. Taking the steps as an example, if the rot was only on the bottom parts touching and near the ground, and the rest of the steps solid with many years of life left in them, someone should not sacrifice safety thinking they had to replace 'all or nothing' on their own steps, and go longer with the 'nothing' while saving up funds, when leaving the rotted base in place during that time may be an accident waiting to happen. To do that repair, I might 'sister' (i.e., glue and screw) 18" chunks of the same size framing material onto the inside surfaces of those stringers to have solid wood go all the way to the ground again, then cut away the 2-3 inches of rot on the stringer ends and fill in with a patch of the same material fastened to the 'sister' piece. Anyway, just an idea. Given the economics involved these days, how to correctly repair a partially-weathered or rotted part of a project, versus replacing the whole thing is certainly a timely topic, and I imagine would produce guaranteed views for your most-excellent channel. Regardless if you think there's merit to the idea, I wish you continued success with your channel, and keep up the good work!.
Thanks for all the love! I hear you on the salvaging! I definitely wanted to keep anything that was still intact and save some money for some other parts of the project!
I love this look….I showed it to my husband to maybe give him some motivation (hint hint) but he said he wouldn’t do it like this completely because he needs to have access to under the deck for maintenance, troubleshooting, upkeep, storage of some larger ladders…etc. just a thought.
I actually have access to under the deck from one of the sides! I actually kept a small section open by our AC unit and you can’t see it because I have a small cover around the AC unit. We won’t be storing anything underneath ours because I wanted access to all of the waterlines that are under the deck for the shower and the hose. But, you can totally still do this and create an access point on the side.
