Back in the old days we didn't have fancy rgb lighting, we sometimes used to put a tea candle on the psu to give some ambience when gaming in the dark.
10:59 IMPORTANT NOTE: Tim is applying thermal paste here because his CPU and cooler had already been in use. When you buy this CPU new, the paste is pre-applied on the cooler, so no need to apply any more than what's already pre-applied out of the box. That being said, I do recommend (out of personal experience) removing the stock thermal paste on these coolers with rubbing alcohol, and then you can apply some aftermarket paste yourself, like Arctic MX-4 for example. Not only are aftermarket pastes better for thermal conductivity, but they will also last longer without drying out.
I think the main advantage will be, that aftermarket thermal paste won't "glue" the cooler to the processor and make you rip the CPU out of the socket if you want to remove the cooler. At least some blame the stock thermal paste for this problem.
@@qwertyls8552 doesn't have to be MX-4, I was only mentioning this one because it represents great value in terms of price to performance. But there are other options as well, listing them all would take forever though.
AMD brings out new CPU intel drops prices, AMD new GPU Nvidia drop prices, AMD got the big shot companies scared enough to drop prices which they never do = great for us. I now have an all AMD setup and better in the pocket for it.
They drop because they don't want competitor undercutting them, not because they are scare. I'll give you intel, but I'm sure Nvidia ain't scare one bit.
@@yrh002b8 Nvidia new AMD was launching the RX cards, Nvidia quickly released the Super cards, which annoyed those that just baought the standard cards that turned out to be underclocked, they then dropped the super prices in the AMDs jebaited thing. AMD doesnt have anything to lose, unless they grow anywhere near the size of the other two.
All AMD setup is what I thought of I was going to get for desktop. You always get best performance at an affordable price . But I was unable keep my desktop on both my workplace and home. Thus I got a 2020 G5 gaming laptop for a compromise. It is portable and save my space at both at office and home .
Yeah, and if you bought Intel stock 2 years ago you barely made money, but if you bought AMD stock you made over 300% in the last 2 years. Thank you Lisa Su for leading AMD to where they are today. I'd stay with AMD too for years to come. Gitty up AMD.
Not sure about that dRAM-less SSD recommendation as your main drive. I'd switch it for Team L5 LITE 3D which is more reliable and a great value at $60.

@@itouchgr4ss Nothing wrong yet... Had a nice cheap one and died within the year and took everything with it. Not only are their life spans shorter, they're also less consistent in performance. Just to save a few bucks, a really shit manufacturer thing to do tbh
@@itouchgr4ss Sure they work, but they also tend to be slower, have micro-stutters and wear out faster, something you don't want for your OS drive. I guess strictly for gaming they are fine, but when price difference is only $10-15 - I'll happily pay that for more reliability and longevity.
Unnecessarily Loud i can’t comment on the durability as mine still work fine but i do agree they are cheap for a reason. My setup consist of the main ssd drive for windows, 1 for games and 1 mechanical drive for everything else. So i am not worried about data loss or anything.
So I went down the RUclips rabbit hole for a week and came to the same conclusion as this video. I wish I'd have seen this video first. If you want a good, cheap SSD the Crucial MX500 line is bomb-proof and cheap.
@Wat Why not? Hard drives are so 2019. That 660p was on cheap last year. I bought one as a storage drive. Might as well ask why the Lian Li case. or the 80+ Gold PSU,
@@clickism I just did a build with a Sapphire PULSE RX 5600 XT. I can get pretty steady 60fps at 1440p (technically WQHD) on Ultra or High settings in everything I've thrown at it, which for an advertised 1080p card is pretty good in my opinion. No driver issues; AMD seems to have finally sorted that.
Hardware Unboxed favourite outlet PC Case Gear here in Australia has got some now too at $149AUD same price as a R5 3400 & $50AUD cheaper than R5 2600 so a bit choice for us now too 😁
1600AF+5700XT crushes his "ultimate 1440p value" build for the same money. The first performance graphs were done with a 2080ti to eliminate a gpu bottleneck, which diminishes the lead if you drop in a slower card. The 4 games average 5700 chart shows a 7% lead for the 3600, but the 1600AF still has 300-400 MHz overclocking headroom. The same chart clearly shows that a stock 2600 with a 2070S is 7% faster than a 3600 with a 5700.
@@pwnwin i made the mistake of buying a €200 x570 instead of a €115 tomahawk max thinking it would be better for future proofing but it's not xD don't buy pricy mobos with useless features
I would definitely recommend spending 20$ on an aftermarket cooler even though it is a budget build. Something like an Arctic Freezer 34 eSports One can often be found on sale in roughly that range and the acoustic performance is just awesome. I am running the Arctic Freezer 33 eSports and basically it's the airflow model where as the 34 is an updated static pressure model. And even though mine is the old model I never hear it. If you can find a hyper 212 on some sort on sale that is also a possibility though I don't think it's quite as good.
It depends that cooler wasn't the Prism. If you get a chip that comes with the Wraith Prism cooler you can keep it. I'm running it in my build and my CPU temps max out at 60C under load, and the fan isn't even running at full. Sure you can get better, but it's diminishing returns on Zen 2. The architecture thermals are fantastic.
@@chrisdpratt Even with the Wraith Prism I'd still get a better cooler. It is good. But it's no better than an average 20$ cooler. And when you can get a 40$ cooler on sale for 20$ I'd definitely go with that. And if you go for a somewhat older model that is often possible.
Well why is there a need for another one? If one board is so good then why not just buy that? If Asus or someone else dose the same motherboard, as MSI did here, there would be no difference beside the brand name
Keep such videos coming! It's always great to have an actual combo of decent hardware. Since the market gets new stuff so fast it's hard for someone like me to keep up with it. Small explanation and listing of the hardware parts is all I personally always need. Watching half an hour of such videos gives me well riunded summary about what to aim for in my next build!
I'm leaving comments all over this channel lol. This was another really helpful video (along with Paul's hardware) on catching up on PC building (last time I built was in the early 90s). Even a totally straight forward question like "What X570 board to get for a 3700x derails into "get a 3600" or "get a b350 tomahawk". I am going to avoid that place like the plague. Waste of time.
@@dontanton7775 Doesn't sound like too much derailing for me. Depending on where you are from, and what is the purpose of your build, it might indeed be better to get a 3600 rather than 3700x OR to get a lower end motherboard for 3700x. Not sure about B350, but X570 is a waste of money for the most part if you don't use R9 processor, good B450 will handle 3700x just fine even with overclocking involved. But if you want to get a 3700x and an X570 board but not sure which model, those recommendations are kinda useless. Kinda depends on the question and how it's asked though, can be hard to know if the person just want a recommendation for a good X570 board or if the person think that he/she NEEDS an X570 board to use a 3rd gen Ryzen chip. Also, there might be different reasons why people make those recommendations, some just want to help, others want you to change your mind 'cause they think you're wrong, someone trying to troll etc., kinda depends where you ask and who you ask. The hardware market can be a bit confusing these days, what i usually do is that i find the parts i like/want, check out as many reviews/benchmark i can find from sources i trust/look trustworthy and go from there. By looking at multiple independant sources you can usually get a pretty good idea of what to expect. My on sale asus rog strix 2070 was still $817 (it said on shelf it was on sale for $629.99 but our Canadian taxes are crazy) after taxes the cooler was $200, all my 2 tbs plus 1 250gb costed arond $350. I got a more budget board because it was the best looking black n red one i could find. All in all though i can play 95% of games in 4k 60 fps or if i play on medium to high, 2k 144fps. The only times i have issues is when my 60 hz 4k monitor screen tears so i just use it for video or xbox gaming 4k steady titles.
Seems like a nice build Hate to be that guy but there is no 2K (atleast not commonly) and if there was it would be closer to 1080p than 1440p 4K is called that because it's almost 4000 pixels in width (3840×2160) and is actually a from cinema where the resolution was 4096×2160 making it 4K in width Actual 2K would be 2048×1080 which I'm assuming you ain't using. But if you were talking about 1080p you would be sorta correct
Same motherboard and cpu i went with 3 months ago when my system was on budget. That gpu cooler wont clear the 1st ram slot so i took a dremel and fixed that but ended up getting the wraith prism cooler instead and maxed out my 3600 cpu at 4.2 ghz. When i had more funds i bought a nvidia rtx 2070 super, corsair 465x case and extra LL fans and commander pro and 750w gold corsair power supply. My only complain besides just having 1 m2 nvme slot which is fine is the post boot up scream takes long and i have a samsung evo 970 that boots in 5 secs once the post is done, lol. 10:59 IMPORTANT NOTE:
Tim is applying thermal paste here because his CPU and cooler had already been in use.

@@dontanton7775 Doesn't sound like too much derailing for me. That Mech OC is terrible cooler though.
@@Lollakuk It actually does pretty well with thermals. I did need to do the washer trick due to the junction temps going past 90°C, and I altered the fan curve to be a bit more aggressive.
How you liking the 5700xt? I picked up a XFX Thicc 3 last week and having absolutely no problems with it. AC Odyssey DLC doesn't run but that is general AMD hardware issue. No crashes, blackscreens, and my card boosts to 2100 pretty easily.

Have nearly the same build. 3600x, 450 bazooka (from what i can tell, matx version of tomahawk), same team c16 ram kit) - but i have a suited and booted vega 56 (950mhz memory, 1750 state 7). I play on 2560x1080 21:9, which isn't quite 1440 (it's about a million pixels less), but is much more than 1080 (about a million pixels more).
Very solid.
Before I watch this lets compare my December 2019 1440p Ryzen 3000 build.
R5 3600
RTX 2070 super
16GB RGB CL16 3200mhz
X570 Aorus Elite Wifi
1TB NVMe
750w Gold psu
Coolermaster H500 case
Hyper 212 cooler
This was my first PC build, I could have saved $$ on motherboard, storage, ram and case after more research, this build was $1400 US in early December.
Honestly not a bad build. The only thing I would've swapped would be the case. I've had bad luck with Cooler Master cases in the past, so I usually try to steer away from their cases.
The 5700xt would perform similarly to the 2070 super and you would be saving a good amount of cash for that cpu upgrade or a better montor or just keep the money.
@@DsLmaNiaC If you look into it, the 5700 XT isn't a very good card, mainly because of the drivers. It performs very well in same games, but very bad in others, which stinks bcuz I really want to love that card. My brother almost bought one, but ended up buying a used GTX 1080 ti instead.
Btw, I'm not an Nvidia fanboy, quite the opposite actually, but that card's drivers sadly have too many issues for me to just ignore them and push it in people's faces...
The only thing that looks over-spec'd to me is the motherboard, everything else is great. It does mean you've got plenty of upgrade room down the line with that PCIe 4 graphics slot as well.
@@NekoOkto My 5700 XT has been running just fine with no issues. I think some of the driver issues was because a lot of people swapping out their old Nvidia card for a new AMD card without doing a fresh install of Windows 10 first.
One thing I notice reviewers never comment on is that shadowplay and the nvenc encoder has its own unique value to any system with less cores than a 3900X. Lots of people just like recording their highlights, and many even dabble a little in streaming stuff to and with their friends, with nvenc being good quality without compromise. Until AMD can use their encoder properly, Nvidia has that feature on lockdown for many people.
2010: Paying more than 300-450$ for a GPU is a ludicrous waste of money.
2020: 600-700$? BEST VALUE! (cha-ching!)
? Who said that?
I basically had this exact same build (I had a Ryzen 5 2600 instead of a 3600), but since the start of the year I've been adding to it. In January, I went from a RTX 2060 to a RTX 2080 SUPER. That yielded massive FPS gains at 1440p, of course. A few months ago, I replaced my Ryzen 5 2600 with a Ryzen 7 3700X. That's helped a lot with multitasking while gaming (I like to run RUclips + Discord + at least one Chrome tab, while gaming). And I recently went from 2x8gb 3200MHz ram to 4x8gb (32gb in total) 3200MHz ram, I thought I might as well tack 16 more GB of ram since everything else in my setup is a bit over the top.
"Why would you want RGB in Power Supply?"
Why would you want RGB in Budget 1440 Computer.
More fps
Save tons by eliminating the 1440 monitor and watch the RGB!
It retracts attention from all the mess in my room :P
What I don't get is that the PSU fan is generally pointed down, so you're not going to really see the RGB anyways, accept maybe a slight ambient cast on your floor. Seems like adding RGB just for the sake of having RGB.
@@chrisdpratt i think the rgb fan pointing down make better sense. The lighting shine downwards through bottom air intake mesh on your desk or floor like car neon layout.
Current build:
AMD Ryzen 1600 AF OC @ 4.1 mhz/1.3 vlts
AMD Power Color RX 580 8gb

Great build, recommend anyone buying this exact rig or close to it is to get a good enough monitor after the fact. No point in buying these amazing visuals with a piss poor viewing experience. I have a rule of thumb for that, spend as much on a monitor as you do on your video card.
@VxFalling If I was spending that kinda cash on video cards, probably? It's a guideline , not a rule, anyway.
This build will have garbage frames for 1440p and passable 1080p on newer games. Buying an expensive 4k or 1440p monitor is a waste as you want have playable frames.. absolute trash advice

- 3pack corsair LL120 RGB fans w/lighting node pro
- Nzxt internal usb hub expansion(only had 2 usb headers on board needed more for all my rgb)
All together this build costed me around $2480 canadian (if i didnt focus on rgb and bought an air cooler, use the stock fans etc. I couldve been around $2000 or less) Keep in mind that we pay way more than americans.
