WARNING: This LEGO build might traumatize you

- There's a fine line between torturing LEGO bricks, and building something magical. This design definitely skirts that line, but ultimately I think this is an amazing build that needs to exist.
You may have seen me build LEGO rings/cylinders, and you may have seen me build LEGO helices, but a helical LEGO cylinder? And although there's a lot of stress in this build, I've had this sitting in the corner of my studio for a few years now. It's solid and very stable. And there's so much more to do with this technique. : )

Note: The fail in the post-credits scene comes from a mistake I made. I deconstructed the build, and in my first attempt to film and recreate it I built it ~16% smaller than it should be (I used 6 segments rather than 7). I had a couple of frustrating moments in that reconstruction only to realize that I had build it much smaller than I ever would have knowingly attempted. When I started over with seven segments per loop I had zero problems and it assembled perfectly. LEGO plates are a wonderful and resilient creation. 😂
Total pieces: 1818
Piece Breakdown: 2x2 plate (lime green): 1014, 1x2 plate (black): 769, 2x8 plate (black): 29, 1x2 plates (green): 4, 1x3 plates (black): 2

Alright, serious question: how long would that spiral have to be for you to be able to flex it around to connect to itself at the start? One giant helix?
I thought the same!!
A torus even!
A helictical torus!
That's how they built the LHC
Great question! I'd have to change up the overall structure to accommodate smaller cross-bracing on the inside of the helical torus, and longer cross bracing on the outside. So it would depend on how much curvature I could get in the final design. But I will be going there some day 😂It just feels inevitable.
The power of tolerance-stacking is difficult to comprehend, but brick-bending is an excellent visual aid.
tolerance stacking? what's that? legit question.
@@keithsvenson568 Nothing built by humans is perfectly exact - or at least nothing big enough for a person to hold in their hand - so everything is made with certain tolerances. In the case of mass-produced objects that are all supposed to be identical, they will all have the same tolerance, but they will all be somewhere in that range (say, six thousandths of an inch). This means that some may be two or three thousandths bigger than the design specification, and others may be smaller by that same margin. If you take a thousand of the undersized ones and stack them, then take a thousand of the oversized ones and stack them, the stacks will not be the same height, and the difference will be enough to matter (big enough to see, big enough even to add one more to the stack of small ones to even it out), The concept of Tolerance Stacking is the idea that when a bunch of different parts all have large enough tolerances, things can be noticeably different (maybe even falling outside of specification for the assembly, even though each part in the assembly on its own is within specification).
Whoa thanks for this awesome comment!
"Even if we could make a lego bridge to heaven, it would take a lego force of hundreds, thousands even"

That sound is either satisfying or horrifying. Totally fair.

Fantastic work as always!

Key word being bending
Words cannot explain how this completely went against my expectations, and i'm so glad it did
Just when I thought you were done adding sections, you added more, and more, AND MORE!
Has anyone else noticed that when you watch these pieces and modules be assembled you can see a slight bend, indicating a prior test?
That lime green is one of my most favourite colours. I like seeing it used with black.
It is one of my favorite combinations😊
I’m always amazed at just how well the bricks and plates hold together when you start bending them! I keep thinking they won’t go that far and then you magically make it work!
Amazing job! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
I opened RUclips and this was randomly top post. RUclips gave me something I didn’t know I needed. This was calming, alarming, mystical, and maddening all at once and I thank you for this unexpected mind altering pleasure. Take my sub, my heart, and all my wonder. This is amazing!
I like the final twist at the end too! Trial and error and you show failures too!
I love how you always have a color scheme for your crazy builds, but I wonder if you could every now and again, just use a whole bunch of random colors for some builds.
I ask for a couple of reasons, personally, I just want to see how it looks.
The main reason though, is because, a few months back, I shared a bunch of your videos with a friend, one who does a lot of Lego collecting. They told me, the only reason why they won't do builds like yours, is because they don't have enough of particular color for a shape, for example, they don't have enough black 1x3 bricks. However, they have enough 1x3 bricks to do such builds.
I think that sometimes people inadvertently hold themselves back from creating something because they think they need very specific tools, even though they have tools that would work suitably.
I feel it would just be very beneficial to many, to see that you can create no matter what tools you have.
(Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk?)
As a sidenote to all of the above, this particular build, how many times would this build have to be replicated to connect them all into one big torus?
I'm think it would take 64 segments.
That's an interesting point, and one I had not considered. I will ponder that. Thank you.
@@BrickBending Absolutely!
@@BrickBending if nothing else on April fool's you could go with a garishly technicolor look for something- though that might be a bit of a tight deadline so eh, just a thonk.
@@jaxblonk5127 that's sounds like fun.
With a variable length of the mid spikes (>7 spikes unit in this case, i.e. profile fits a normal curve) would it help bend the structure in multiple ways?
This could make for a pretty solid lamp.
I quite literally blurted an "OH MY GOD!" as if I was watching a contortionist doing something along the lines of dislocating a limb to put it backwards or something like that. I didn't expect that bend at all 😨😂
yeah it feels satanical
I would never have thought that I would feel anxious watching someone build something from Lego.
Pretty tight bending there, I was expecting a toroid out of it but that'd be just another few days of clicking pieces together.
Without a doubt, my favourite one yet. Incredible.
Nice!
Played with a lot of Lego, normal and technic, but I did not realise just how flexible it could be. Sir you have opened my eyes with your amazing constructions, thank you 🙂
it looks like a tool design, like an archemede's screw, or for a dry-medium-processing-plant-maneuver: it looks effective for whatever means it is intended for; maybe moving gold-mining slurry through a mine-processing-plant for extraction.
It's always crazy to see how many pieces you have of any block. So much
What's even crazier is that I never have enough 🤪
@@BrickBending , oh well you still do great job. You have more of each color needed than I have
@@toxiczone2016 he just buys individual pieces in bulk for these projects.. so if he has 1680 lime green 2x2 plates that doesn't mean he also has 1000 purple 2x2 plates (unless he used them in a previous video)

I’m always amazed how many legos you have
The 2 color pattern looks very good on the model
Also, this was quite an unexpected end, nice job!
Imagine trying to build this with the old brown pieces. There is so much tension in that build that you can hear it.
I am more fascinated by the sheer ammount of identical bricks you have.
Wow, I'm already trying to figure out how to use this as an Archimedes screw for GBC!
Please do! That would be amazing!!!
Could you have made it so that it doesn’t simply "cut off" at one of the "pillars" but rather that, at some point, the spiral stops ascending/descending, loops around and meets with its previous position to form a plane circle for it to stand on? Also, what was the reason behind not having the "pillars" perfectly on top of each other? Was it not feasible structurally or was it simply a design decision?
It's because the double-wide strips are staggered for strength.
Two great questions. It's always really tricky when you try to adjust curvature in a LEGO build because those adjustments have to happen in whole number increments (3 LEGO studs down to 2 LEGO studs). So what you describe is probably possible--just really difficult and would take some experimentation. And the building technique I use requires staggered 2x2 plates, so the cross bracing couldn't perfectly align--which is what my brain wants. : )
every time i watch one of your videos im crying the whole time
"How many Legos you do have?"
*"Y E S"*
This is awesome. Do you ever use advanced mathematical formulas to "game out" strange new constructions?
When I first started watching these I was like "why does he always roll the things they've made around."
Now I'm like "Damn, can't wait to see this one roll"
Bro is making builds that would make any master builder nauseated, but still has the common courtesy to wear gloves. Respect.
To quote a perfect man:
"HOW DID ALL THESE SQUARES MAKE A CIRCLE!?"
My dude misspelled "mesmerize", legit every creation of his be having me looking like a goldfish in awe. 😭❤
That was fantastic, I just love the way you come up with new and different constructions all the time.
usually when i see a few pieces at the start i can make a few guesses on how it should turn out, this one kept me guessing. It was like watching a train wreck or a car crash... I couldn't look away. Excellent Video!
You can tell those bricks have gone through hell at the start of the video... Oh the open spaces and unnatural arching... You monstaaaaah!
Now you should build a second such helix construction but with a larger diameter and the same lead. On the smaller helix, put sloped tile elements outside. On the larger helix, put sloped pieces on the inside. So you get a nice Lego screw thread. :-) The smaller helix is the bolt, the larger helix is the nut.
That thing is so trippy... and I love it
These videos are so satisfying. Good job on them. I love the way you think outside of the box.
The fact that this guy has this many of the same Lego pieces
Some of your best work yet!
All your builds are amazing!
Over these videos, you have totally re-anchored what I think can be done with Lego, so I am far less traumatized than when I first saw one of these. Perhaps a double helix next?
Wish I could've seen this irl at Bricks Cascade! Truly epic, you never fail to amaze! Keep up the great work!
Sound of the bricks so setysfying good job

You're so dedicated. Patience is virtue, indeed!

Awesome. More 3d sculptures, and you can also use flagged led light sources to highlight the forms and movement
Awesome build.
A shot that I think would be cool to see on a build like this is @5:13 when you roll it side to side have the camera on a track and try to keep it centered so we’re looking through it as it rolls.
From watching a bunch of these videos, I’ve gotten better at predicting which way the bricks are going to bend, whether on the plane or into the plane. This time around I was pretty sure either was possible. Apparently it was both. This build was awesome!
This is a really amazing technique that allows a ton of flexibility. We'll see more of it, I promise! : )
Oh boy, yeah, as an old timey Lego building kid I could hear the tension of the whole construction as it groaned under its internal stress.
That was somewhat traumatizing but also incredibly satisfying to see what the final result would be. Amazing, as always.
Traumatizing is an understatement.
I remember when you still had like 10k and then that short blew up!
The thing that traumatized me the most is this man's green 2x2 collection
Okay, that has more plot twists than a Hollywood blockbuster.

This is a work of art.
Watching this on 2x time, makes it look like stop-motion animation, change my mind
That would actually make a great light fixture tbh
I honestly do not understand how your brain can figure these things out! Every time I believe you have reached some kind of threshold to what can be made with bricks, you come up with something new and amazing... Kudos!
