Conservatives lose West Midlands mayoral contest to Labour

- Labour has won a surprise victory in the West Midlands mayoral contest as Andy Street became the most prominent casualty of Sir Keir Starmer’s march towards No 10.
Street, who was known as the most powerful Tory outside Westminster, was ousted as mayor of the West Midlands as Labour claimed a string of victories across England, putting the party on track to form the next government.
The former managing director of John Lewis was defeated by Labour’s Richard Parker by 1,508 votes in a “knife-edge” finish that saw a bundle check and a partial recount. The result was declared shortly before 9pm, with Street polling 224,082 votes to Parker’s 225,590.

I was suprised that Andy Street didn't decide to leave the tories and run as an independent. Instead he went down with the sinking ship that is the conservative party
Had he won, Street would have pulled a Houchen: Pretend to not be a Tory, right up until you are standing next to Rishi Sunak.
Delighted
What fools the Conservatives have become…
What news paper did you read that from....??

Yes agree but Labour are no good although this man seems like he may be. However Labour leadership is wishy washy blowing in the wind, or whichever way the wind blows and are untrustworthy because you can't get a direct answer from Sir Keir.

A sad day for West Midlands
The country wants our country back!
We are doomed, this country is absolutely doomed!
Birminghan will 100% be a non british city over the next 5 years now
What a world we live in today in the UK. I can't think at any other time in history that a leader like Starmer would come to power. It just shows you how bad the conservatives have become because I don't believe Starmer would win an election at any other time.
Aye, we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Tories are bloody useless, and so is Labour. They're as bad as each other. We have a Labour government in Wales: an example of how bad they are is that our health boards (Trusts in England) are in big trouble: (and have been for several years), either 'in special measures', 'targeted intervention' or 'enhanced monitoring' (yep, we're in such a mess, the Welsh gov has created different levels of intervention... and, on top of all that, these beleaguered health boards are expected to save £millions in budget at the same time as putting things right). Oh, and our education system is in a big mess too.
Then I look at what Labour Mayor, Pipsqueak Khan, has done to London, and wonder, can it possibly get worse than London? And I fear that the answer is, yes. What he's done to our once great city, a Labour government will bring to the rest of the country, and we'll also be infested with it.
We need Reform, but the vote at the GE will be split, which will allow Labour to get into power - and more of the same crap that we saw with the Tories. Only, instead of posh prats in the Cabinet, we'll have the likes of Lammy, Rayner, Cooper, et al. They'll spend, all right, until they've rung us all out until we're drier than a witch's tit, then we'll go bust (as usually happens when Labour is in power). Stop the world, I want to get off!
That is a very valid point…It’s frightening to think what ‘Starmergeddan’ is likely to do to the UK as well as bankrupt it.
@@nicholasforman1195 Aye, and add to that the fact that Starmer pressured the Speaker of the House to bend the rules, because MPs had received threats from representatives of a certain sector of society if they didn't get their way. Hoyle said he caved in because of the risk of harm to MPs. Expect Starmer to pander even more once he's in power.
Totally agree. As a lifelong labour voter, and an anti Zionist Jew - I'm actually afraid of what Starmer might do with the huge majority he's going to get. He's not labour at all, and apparently I'm the wrong sort of Jew 🤷♀️🇵🇸

Their arrogance prevents them from regretting anything, they'll just blame it on the voters.
Waste of 150 billion to shorten people journey by 20 minutes... Plus the destruction of the forests and woods.
Labour just bankrupt Birmingham 😮
@@moosky7344cry
@@moosky7344reducing journey times should not be considered the main aim of HS2. A major impact it would’ve had (had it not been so cut back) would have been that it would serve as an alternative route for all the intercity train services currently using the West Coast Mainline, which is running at capacity. By removing intercity services from the WCML it would free up significant space to run more frequent commuter services resulting in a much needed increase in capacity and would also allow for increased numbers of freight trains, removing trucks from the roads.
Yes, building HS2 does mean that the landscape and habitats in the area are impacted, but build a railway anywhere in the UK and that’s a completely unavoidable impact. A significant chunk of that money that’s already been spent on HS2 has gone to ensuring that it has a small of an impact on the environment as possible.
Before the government scaled back HS2’s aspirations, I believe would’ve had numerous benefits. But now that its scope has been reduced so much, what we’ll get once it’s built will be significantly less useful; and yet it will still cost a ludicrous amount to build.
@@moosky7344 That is not the point of HS2. The whole point is to free up capacity on the extremely congested West Coast Mainline, it just so happens to be that it worked out to not be much more to just build it as a 225MPH line instead of running it at 125mph, which allowed for those time savings, though it is not the focal point of it, which has been poorly communicated by HS2 ltd,Gov and News, which is why people think it is a way to save 20 mins into Birmingham, when it's not. Besides, HS2 is likely to cost £66B (which I think is awful, especially as it's just a 140mile line now post 2023), but I think its money worth spending for the benefits it offers, though I think they need to extend 30 miles north to Crewe for the best benefits to happen
