  • In this episode of the New York Guitar Festival’s Red Sofa Concerts, Bill Frisell performs two solo sets, one on a 1966 Martin 00-21 New Yorker and one on a 1962 Gibson ES-335. We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Bill at the NYGF for 15+ years. One of the most unlikely of guitar heroes, he’s internationally known for genre-straddling work in jazz and Americana, and has racked up honors including a Grammy Award and numerous Critics Polls at Downbeat Magazine.
    With the Martin 00-21 New Yorker:
    -Rambler (Bill Frisell)
    -Lotus Blossom (Billy Strayhorn)
    -What the World Needs Now is Love (Burt Bacharach)
    With the Gibson ES-335:
    -Crepuscule with Nellie (Thelonious Monk)
    -Misterioso (Thelonious Monk)
    -We Shall Overcome (Charles Albert Tindley)
    -I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams).

    p.s. Hola señor González, First of all, thank you for visiting our channel. We are humbled by the interest we receive from all corners of the globe, and love it when people are inspired by our content and take the time to ask questions or share information. As for your inquires, we asked our founder/director David Spelman, and here is what he said: “the mic on the Martin acoustic was a Mojave MA-200, and the mic on the amp was a Sure SM-57. Our Apogee Symphony was sometimes having issues, so we brought in the Zoom recorders for back up, just in case. Everything was done in mono, with the second Mojave and Sure mics going to the Zoom. The Mojave went through an LA-610 and the Sure through an NPNG DMP-2NW. Everything then went to Logic. Big shout-out to the great Jack Daley of Dug Deep Production recording studio in Asbury Park, NJ, where we like to mix the Red Sofa Concerts.” We hope this answers your questions. Do please visit our channel again real soon.
    *cheers from Team NYGF. : )

    Bill and I were fellow paperboys at Station 13 for The Denver Post in the mid-to-late 60's. I had no idea that he was such a guitar icon. He had not crossed my mind for the last five decades until this video popped-up. As kids, he was one of the "Big/older Kids" (as I was a few years younger) who was always quiet, kind and helpful; a true role model, while most of the other "Big/older Kids" were not so pleasant. It was great to run across this video and the memory.

      @@guitarfestival Those were some great times! As I recall, our paper station was at 6th and Clayton or so and Bill lived over on 7th and St. Paul or thereabouts, while we were at 7th and Detroit. Once, at age eleven, I impressed all of the older kids when I took a wire from a bundle of newspapers, threw it straight up and it hit some power lines, thus shorting-out lights in the neighborhood. In those days, malfeasant behavior got one a star on their resume... Bill, "The Nice Kid" showed me how to load, and then helped me load my bike when I first started the job as an eleven year old. We had a wild crew there. I remember a bunch of the older guys went to the Cherry Creek Woolworths and stole a bunch of 45 records and then played them at the Station. Some of the locals that Bill might recall were the Irelands, Shields, Wilburs, Reeds, Mr. Takarsky (our Manager), the Knudsons, the Lefrees, Coquillards, Ebys, Falkenbergs (Charlie was killed on 9-11 on the Pentagon plane), the Clarks, and too many others whose names escape me... wait, Lisa and Ted Fonck (spelling) who lived next to the Crosbys at 7th and Milwaukee...

    The thing that I think makes Bill Frisell so stylistically different from every other guitarist I've heard is how deliberate every note is. Sometimes, it can even sound a bit unfluid or stilted as a result, on occasion. But, it's 100% because he is selecting each and every note, and being incredibly intentional about what comes out of the guitar next. It's a totally different approach to playing than anyone else I listen to. He's got a ton of muscle memory, and I'm sure he can fly through scales, but he just doesn't. Every nuance of the thing, each voicing, is something that it sounds like he spent a month thinking about.

      that's funny coz i get the opposite feeling, like he's making it up as he goes along. as the other commenter said, he's speaking, not reciting a speech. it's not written poetry. he's speaking, which inevitably includes artefacts of thoughts, spandrels, if you like, with that improvisational folky jazzy spirit, rather than the exactitude of classical pieces or the written word of poetry where every word is pained over. for me - the way it sounds for me - this is a little rawer than that, which may therefore sound unintentional at times, whereas the whole point of practicing a piece 1000 times is to create the illusion of effortlessness when it has been anything but. i can appreciate why we both have different feelings towards it though as when it comes to top performers it's difficult to tell what is practiced and what is not. i used to work in a comedy club and it was so interesting to see someone do a little ad lib that really cracks you up ...and then to hear it again the next night. at the time, it felt so natural you would have sworn they just thought it up on the spot. then you realise they're just really good at what they do, haha. you're in their palm, under their spell.

    • @UkAlien
      @UkAlien 2 года назад

      @@pajamasflannel I know what you mean. They are both totally in the music when they play. That's what makes them both great improvisers. You can hear that they have progressed beyond having to think too much about theory, and they can finally be free to have fun with melody and harmony. I think a comparison to Monk for any musician is maybe one of the biggest compliments!
