What i love about rocks character development is that he didnt become a "edgelord antivillain/villanous protagonist" like every other anime would have done out of nowhere, *he just adapted to his environment.* It shows how any man would get corrupted just by surviving through the hell that is roanpur, and getting used to it. Its built up so subtely in s1 and s2 that you would think it was just forced in of you weren't paying attention. And for black lagoon to have done that whilst still being in your face, with a lot of its action and themes is incredible. He enjoys the thrill deep down, regardless of whether he actually cares for the person he is helping, and he uses slimy, hypocritical yet VERY convincingly deceptive logic to manipulate the odds in his favor. This is what revy chooses to ignore because of her blind infatuation with rock, in the hopes that he will save her. In rocks mind he doesnt shoot to kill, he puts the gun in someone elses hand and "suggests" where to shoot. He's not a "bad" person, he's just pragmatic. He could be a don if he wanted to no problem, i have never seen an anime character use ONLY words, no anime magic bullshit, to be this much of a MENACE. Goated writing, charcter development and a top 5 anime in general.
He is a good character but in the first season it seems like the writer didn't know what to do with him, he could be built up better in the first episodes but they had to rush it.
@@cotocoyerakson8195 i don't see it as rushed, but to each their own i guess. I just want to see more black lagoon chapters at this point, so we can get another season
Rock acted like a villain to play the hero. He broke off the only friendship he had with Garcia to make him mistrust him and to prevent him from coming back to the city to save him.
Think about it. With all the events that’ve taken place in Roanapur he’s already come to realize that in that world, whether he likes it or not, people are going to get killed no matter what he does. Plus during the final arc, in the anime, we saw Rock’s first act as a heroic villain when he requested that Balalika destroy the Washmine clan in an effort to stop Yukio from giving into that life and starting operations into Roanapur.
This is how an island full of badguys make to a poeple. This is how the guy from far cry 3 change from normal person living in city into cold murderer and fast killer.
I was just watching this anime today I tought the same thing, Rock changing while spending his time with criminals is just like Far Cry main characters. "You might have a talent to kill and you don't even know it until it happens" - Rabi Ray Hanna, Far Cry 4.
Black Lagoon is updating chapters again and holy shit. Evil Rock is now in full power and making moves in the city like a new crimeboss. The endings of the two new non-animated story arcs (Wild Red Wild Card and L'homme sombre) were were heavily shaped by Rock's Machinations.
So Rock's becoming like Walter White in Breaking Bad. Mr. Chips to Scarface. Now I think a big question could be; Was Rock always like this and Roanapur was the environment to let his flourish or has Roanapur made him like this, corrupted and poisoned him.
@@jonathaneilbeck2263 Rock always had the skillset but never had the confidence. It was never about the morality for Rock but he seemingly lacked of ability to help people.

Looks like Rock's letting out his Light Yagami side, which is funny since they share the same English voice Edit: Great, that's, just, perfect! I got 100 likes since this caught on!
Although people might disagree, I have a suspicion that Rock's true nature might have been evident from the beginning. One possible hint to this was during the parking garage incident. Even Balalaika could sense his hidden darkness. Besides, if Rock is as noble as he claims, why does he remain in Roanapur? If he was genuinely concerned about right and wrong, you'd think he would have left the city and the Black Lagoon crew long ago. Perhaps he foolishly believes he can still "purify" Roanapur and its residents. But how can he do that if he's been "corrupted" himself? Furthermore, what about his past life in Japan? Neither the anime nor the manga reveal much about it. I could be entirely wrong, but I feel that Rock has not been completely forthcoming about his past either.
Rock has no life to return to, he is legally dead and wouldn’t be believed if he went back to Japan, the Black Lagoon Company is all he has in the entire World. He could theoretically get a new identity, but he was resolute when he made his new identity of “Rock”, he would not allow for himself to be owned or for his life to be in someone else’s hands. But I do like the theory that there is more to his past, imagine if all this time he was actually a secret plant by one of the government, or even a sleeper agent. There’s potential for some good FanFiction to made of it at the very least.
@@maylabrown4584 It's funny how you suggested the theory about Rock being an agent. Because I've wondered about that being a possibility, too. What if he was an agent and no one ever saw it coming? That'd be an unbelievable twist that would totally redefine his character.
