Recently decided to go back and focus on the basic techniques I skipped particularly string bends/vibrato. I was really struggling with getting confortable with the movement itself and this video made a huge difference. It actually instantly improved my bends as you suggested it may, now I just need to practice getting the intonation right. Not sure how I came across your channel but I'm glad I did! Thank you
Tha'ts so awesome to hear...sometimes it just takes one of those "lightbulb moments" and things suddenly click for you. I'm happy to hear that may have happened in your case. Thanks for watching!
Your videos on finger independence have formed my warmup routines this last year and made a huge impact; excited to try and improve bending; really good stuff!
That's really cool to hear...thank you! I'm glad you've incorporated the finger independence exercises into your routine, they're definitely very useful. Let me know if you have any topics you'd like me to cover in upcoming videos, I'm always looking for new topics that I can help players with.
Yeah, that's a great idea! Can you give me some detail as to what you mean exactly? Like, how do I learn a piece from a technical perspective, the theory behind the music, or how do I actually learn the notes?
Great content! I like your explanation on this topic. Do you use your wrist while you bend? What I mean is the wrist movement the predominant force when you go from compressed fingers to straight for bending higher strings? Or do you focus more on your finger movements? Thanks!
It's more of forearm rotation than wrist flexion (wrist bending). But yes the finger extension/compression works together with forearm rotation. If you only use fingers you're limiting everything to very small muscles/tendons which have less force and duration. That's why using the larger forearm muscles/tendons should make it a lot easier to bend the strings. But bending the wrist should be totally avoided because that actually elongates the tendons of the fingers and limits their dexterity and mobility.
I always have a problem with bending the high strings upward. Whichever finger I’m using to perform the bend ends up underneath the string above it, which wrecks the whole bend as I release it.
@@DatDack hey man, sorry for the late reply! I’m going to paste the email I received after reaching out. Hi, This is a mechanics issue. You’re using the wrong technique and likely the wrong knuckles when you bend. Depending on how long you’ve been laying/using the incorrect mechanics, it can be easy or challenging to solve. However, without addressing it, you’ll find yourself unable to progress with bending/vibrato (and probably other techniques). “If you’d like help I can suggest either my monthly workshop Hand Mechanics (there have been several that address this exact issue) or individual lessons. However, continuing to play while using poor mechanics will only ingrain bad habits, and create other bad habits by forcing you to compensate elsewhere. Let me know if I can help in any way. Max” Not really much in the way of advice here, but I guess I didn’t expect him to give it away for free. Maybe one day I’ll take one of his workshops.

@MaxRichMusic Total game changer tbh pal! You have any tips for vibrato as well? 😂
I'm coming out with a video on vibrato soon...so keep an eye out for that one!

Thank you very much!
Hi there love your vids really helpful, can you make a video about what's your approach when learning a new song/piece thanks!

@@MaxRichMusic like before learning a piece what to look for, how to practice it properly, how to avoid bad habits, and getting the timing right 😃
Great content. Please could you make a playlist on "Guitar Techniques"
I have playlists for technique broken down by skill level

Thanks for taking the time to reply! And I understand your point on forearm rotation.

This is a mechanical issue with how you're using your knuckles. Send me an email maxrichmusic.com/contact
@@MaxRichMusic thanks for the reply, will do!
@@sondoke hey! i have the same issue actually, what solution was recommended here? :)
