    Wow, out of all the guitar lessons on bends with hundreds of thousands a views, go figure that the one with 5,000 views would be the only one to finally give some kind of instruction on how to mute extraneous string noise. This is an issue I've been working on religiously to fix with regards to my bends. I give you mad props for addressing probably the single most frustrating aspects of learning bends. The problem I'm having still is using my index to block out noise rather than as a buddy to increase the force of my bend makes my bends to pitch harder to perform. This is most likely due to hand intrinsic strength though. Just wanted to say I'm very thankful for this video and you've earned a new subscriber.

    Watching this in 2020 and comparing the video quality to what you do today, Ben. All the info is brilliant as usual, but the camera work, the sound bouncing off the ceiling, the back lighting and overall look - an entire UNIVERSE away from your current stuff. It’s fun to see how you’ve matured in your onscreen presentation since this one. Great bend lesson, regardless, dude! 🤘🏻

    Thanks Ben, one of the issues I have is when bringing the strings back down. I notice it makes a feeble sound and like its starting to mute real bad after the bend. I think its just not getting the correct pressure on the string against the fret to maintain the notes but I am unsure how to improve this, since I cannot seem to physically get the purchase on the string enough to prevent it. I will keep practicing but its been a nightmare. Great vid by the way.

    Hi Ben, I love your videos. I've been trying to do the double stop bends like you showed. I've been trying to play the Pistols and they use a lot for solos. SInce your index finger holds the two thin strings and you do the bend with your 2 middle fingers, how do you mute the string above. I tried using my pinky but couldn't get it to work and I tried to palm mute but it was kind of hard. What do you do? Thanks, Kevin

    As a Bass Player, I learn things from your guitar videos. And bending is not as common on Bass as it is on Guitar. And that's because the strings are thicker on Bass than Guitar. But like you said, if you apply the buddy system with multiple fingers, you will have a better time practicing. It may still take a bit more effort than on guitar. But you can still get there. I had guitar players show me how they do bends and so I just started practicing and over time, now I bend loads on Bass. I also add vibrato as well. Even though Bass is a rhythm foundational instrument where you hold down the botum end and lock in with the drummer. But it is nice when you can do a bass fill that you can also incorporate some bends and vibrato if you wanted to.

    Can anyone help? At 11min. Ben does a great job explaining muting the bend. However that is not always possible as a song eg. like crossroad blues needs the pointer finger to be fretting other notes. I have trouble in the heat of battle often catching the string above overriding my ring/ middle finger combo making a horrible sound. Kind of similar to the dying elephant sound shown earlier. So I know if I catch it with the tip/pad of my middle finger first during the bend this prevents it. Would rising the action help? Any helpful suggestions.

    • @alexjoseph644
      @alexjoseph644 3 года назад

      your fingers should never go under the strings higher up (physically) to the one you are bending up.. if that's happening either your technique is not yet polished or your guitar action (string height from the board) is too high... Hope this helps!

    Your lessons are awesome. Every You Suck at guitar lessons talks about... me. I like how you explain little IMPORTANT stuff others don't, like index muting in this lesson.
    Another fun way to practice bends is Rocksmith 2014. it has a decent guitarcade game just for bends, called Temple Of Bends.
    For Android devices, Pitch Lab Pro is THE best tuner.
    I realize that you are probably sponsored, but I was wondering if you could do a guitar comparison video. Not one where you tell us why any specific brand is better than another, but more one that explains the differences between guitar types, brands, configurations, price points. you know, something that could educate newbs in making an educated purchase decision. If you do, it's be nice if you could try the Godin guitars. (They are made not far from my place ;)

    Great video, man. Though I just recently ran into a small dilemma. I typically bend upward with the face of my nails against the above string(s) (and push them out of the way and slightly off the fretboard). Which works fine--seemingly avoiding "plucking" the above string all together. But when it comes to whole step bends on the high e it's tricky because my fingers kind of just dive under all the above strings. I tried changing to using more of the pads of my fingers but it feels horrible (like the strings almost go under my nails feeling) and doesn't get it done either. Any suggestions anyone?
