    Spectacular video footage of a classic locomotive. I never tire of watching SD40-2s cruising along at track speed ........... the most beautiful diesel freight locomotive created. I really enjoy your videos .......... and it's nice to see that Spring has sprung in the land of 10,000 lakes! Thanks for the great video. Mike

    Yet they don't have any C30-7's on trains when they're plainly more powerful so BNSF wouldn't have to use as many. Or SD45s for that matter if traffic's increasing. But I can see why they're using SD40-2s and we have to enjoy them while they're still around.

    • @SD457500
      @SD457500  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. Those units are long gone from the BNSF, thus why you don't see them.

    • @trainiax
      @trainiax 6 лет назад +1

      Many C30-7's were retired in large numbers in the early 2000's - for two reasons: 1) they were less reliable and more maintenance-intensive than the SD40-2, and 2) they had a much more limited parts supply. The SD40-2 benefits not only from high reliability, but also a ready supply of parts from many aftermarket sources. Furthermore, although the larger GE traction motors had perhaps a slight advantage in low-speed lugging, the C30-7 was not any more powerful than the SD40-2; they both produced 3000 horsepower and had a similar tractive effort when built to the same weight. The C30-7 did have a 5% to 8% fuel efficiency advantage over the SD40-2, but it was not enough to offset the other factors against it.

    • @douglasskaalrud6865
      @douglasskaalrud6865 4 года назад +1

      It's the turbo. The pitch changes up to notch 6 and then the sound disappears. On the 645 the turbo is run by the shaft until there is enough exhaust gas pressure to spin the turbo independently which disengages the clutch. I grew up listening to hordes of Soo Line Dash-2's at Shoreham yard idling away under the sand tower. Only thing that sounds better than an idling turbo 645 is several of them idling at once and one or two being run up and down again. I'd love to have a recording of that sound for the engine facility on my model railroad.
