Thank you, Dr. Griggs, for addressing this topic with so much sensitivity. I have finished chemo two months ago and am struggling with side effects. I often feel so down and depressed although chemo worked well. Good to hear from an expert that feeling hopeless or in dispair is quite normal and what we can do about it. Best wishes to all breast cancer fighters in the world from Germany, Beate

I get this... on my way to infusion last week I got stopped by a train & as I was sitting there watching this train fly by I realized I was thinking - I wonder if I just got out of the car & walked into the trains path would it be so quick I wouldn't even feel it. I should be so grateful that I am still here & living life, but some days are just tougher than others.♡

I feel the same and understand. I have a shadow right behind me and feel that at any time it will take over. 15 months ago I received my breast cancer diagnosis.
I am 1.75 years out from my diagnosis but still live in fear each and every day. When well-meaning people label me a breast cancer "survivor," I just cringe inside. I don't feel that way at all- the fear of recurrence is too great to feel as though this ordeal is truly over.
I've come to accept. That my stage 2, Her2+ breast cancer. Is a chronic disease. It's a matter of how much time that aggressive chemo / surgical / & radiation therapy can buy you. For some it can be decades. For others mere months before it recurs and metastisizes elsewhere. Meanwhile your new reality sinks in. Many of us will be urged to take powerful Aromatase, hormonal therapies with their terrible side effects. In a bid to increase your chances of keeping cancer at bay. Which is not guaranteed. Most of us will opt to do all we can not to recur & accept we're dealing with % from here on. Plus our futures will include frequent tests & scans as our new reality. Soft, sweet, modulated voices do little to replace the fear and dread I feel. But I now fight back with anger & determination. To not allow breast cancer obsess and over shadow my life. Do my best to regain my health and appearance as much as possible. Try to limit that you don't overdo your exposure to cancer sites. Make sure you counter this experience with good things that lift you up and make you feel happy. Such as comedies and romances. Whatever works for you. Pay into your Karma bank account daily. By being kind, caring &;grateful. It sure works for me. But give yourselves credit. You've fought like hell against a dreadful disease don't allow others to devalue, lie or sugar coat your experience and prognosis. I find that both. patronizing condescending.
Thank you for watching. We understand your fear and uncertainty about the future. Remember, you're not alone in feeling this way. It's important to lean on your support network and seek emotional support when needed. Take things one step at a time, and focus on the present moment. The risk of recurrence decreases over time. That is, the likelihood of making it to 5 years disease free is higher at 3 years than it was at the time of diagnosis. The likelihood of making it to 10 years disease-free is higher at 5 years than it was at diagnosis. Here's another thing to think about...to what extent does worrying about recurrence keep it from happening?
Hi dr Griggs, thank you for your support, I think if the bc cancer advanced patient feels more hopelessness, probably lots of unknown and fear, I mean cancer as a name is scary. ❤

The goal of treatment in your case is indeed cure. It is not uncommon to have sharp pains after any type of surgery, but this is something to discuss with your medical team, in particular your surgeon.

I feel the hopelessness 3 years later because I’m sure it will come back. It’s an awful thing.
