  • A journey across the stars always sounds fun, but even more so when you haven’t seen the sun in weeks. Stuck in my small apartment during a global pandemic, I recently became so desperate for an escape that I booted up Mass Effect Andromeda.
The deeply flawed sci-fi role-playing game was received poorly in 2017, and it remains to be frowned upon by many in the gaming community.
But it turns out that just a few mods can go a long way, as you’ll see in the video above.

EA truly has earned the nickname Studio Killer as nearly every studio they by out closes not long after. EA uses Triple A titles for profit not love. They Forced Bioware to Rush the shit out of this all the while screwing them cause they wanted the Mass Effect Hype and knew how much money it would bring. [Small spoilers ahead]
      "H,i I'm Ryder"
"Hi, I'm Hainly Abrams and I'm trans. I came from Jupiter and I fled to an entirely different galaxy to escape the oppression back home... Even though there's an entire race of single-gendered people who frequently engage in interspecies intercourse that no-one has a problem with."
See, this is how you know when they were trying too hard to make a statement on societal concepts. Hainly had no reason at all to reveal that information given that she was so badly ostracized that she left the fucking galaxy over it. More than that, she wears this on her sleeve as though it's her defining characteristics - as though it's the only thing that makes her unique. They had a golden opportunity to feature a trans character and have it work but fucked it up so badly that it not only came off as obtuse but it defied even the character's own logic. You know where it did work though? Dragon Age Inquisition, where you don't even know the character is trans until you build up significant trust with them and they let it slip BECAUSE they trust you not to abuse that information.
Andromeda dropped the ball something fierce. They put writing and character development second to bludgeoning you over the head with real world social problems, thus creating an ironically justified disdain for the very thing they were trying to open peoples' minds to.
EDIT: And these concepts are nothing new to Mass Effect. The entire fucking point of the original trilogy was to offer you, the player, the opportunity to embrace interspecies (see: interracial) unity to overcome seemingly impossible odds and they showed that yes, it is a hard thing to accomplish. The Krogan hate the Turians and the Salarians for the genophage; the humans are at odds with the Turians over the first contact war. Hell, Quarians can't even EXIST on The Citadel without someone turning their nose up at them and accusing them of petty thievery. But you as Shepard can defy that and show that these issues CAN be overcome with enough time and effort as long as SOMEONE is willing to get the ball rolling. Whereas Andromeda is just like, "Yeah, these problems exist, don't you feel sorry for these people? You should."

I had a handful of mods, which obviously helped, but I think pushing myself to just do the big things and ignoring the menial tasks really improves the game. The loyalty missions are great, even Liam's who I never used as a companion otherwise. The bigger side quests are good, too, and most of them give good depth to the locations and people. Most of the main story missions are good, especially the final two with all the remnant shenanigans. My post-game glow may fade, but I really, really loved the final mission because it felt like a culmination of the relationships and decisions I'd made along the way, which is what made me love the endings of ME2 and ME3.

“Straight forward quests” ME2’s & 3’s linear path quests are the best ones, this is why ME2 is the best game in the series. Great areas to explore without too much dead space and copy and paste sections. I can’t stress again that I do not want to drive a shitty tank around a copy and paste planet 10 times picking up collectibles and other shit, the only acceptable Mako bits in ME1 were the one’s where it was just a Point A to B kinda setup.

Yeah... Honestly, I can almost guarantee one of the major reasons people hated it so much was due to being so butthurt by ME3's ending. People are petty like that. They already chose to crucify a game that was 99% masterpiece, due to the 1% they didn't like. Definitely wouldn't put it past them to refuse to acknowledge anything good about the next game, while simultaneously shining a spotlight on any perceived faults. Andromeda was doomed from the get go, regardless of some of the more valid complaints. Even for those that WERE valid (animations, the game being rushed, etc.), none of them were big enough to warrant how much hate the game garnered, IMO.
Then there were some complaints that I felt were just outright stupid.. Like with character creation. Does anyone not remember how terrible character creation was in the original trilogy? Taking off any rose-colored nostalgia goggles, I swear you needed a miracle to make Shepard look halfway decent. Whereas I had no trouble at all making my Sara Ryder look really, really damn good in comparison. She was, dare I say, HOT, even. About the only thing I felt could've been done better in that regard are the facial hair options for the men.

I literally (Yes, literally) can't think of anything I genuinely liked about Andromeda except for the jetpack. And coincidentally that's also the only thing I remember of my 20 hours of playtime with it, until I quit out of disinterest.

I mean on my playthrough of me3, Shep took a breath as he laid there bleeding out. But me4 would probably be fighting krogans that are trying to take over a mostly destroyed galaxy while trying to rebuild. Andromeda being 600 years later could still be a series of it's own but I'm not sure they left much story for Shepard other than a galactic civil war for the ashes left from the reapers, Which could be a decent storyline, but the red blue green endings of 3 would probably created continuity issues that people would throw temper tantrums over.

I picked this game up on a recent weekend Steam sale. Knowing it had bugs ahead of time left me shaking my head at times. But at the end of the day, the story, while rote, was deeply enjoyable. Once you make guns (and the game is designed around you making your own weapons) that fit your play style, the combat is smooth and challenging enough for a cover shooter. The voice acting has highs and lows, like most work of late. That said, I finished my first play through with 98% completion (a couple of random item spawn quests bugged and wouldn't produce the needed items to continue). I sat back and digested the ending for about 5 minutes, then made a new Pathfinder and started fresh. I can't help but blame cancel culture for the lambasting of this game. Had the nerd rage been quieted, most of the tweak and balance mods you speak of would have likely been addressed in patches. I really recommend folks try this game out again, quirks and all. And maybe one day a game will nail a drinking animation.

ME: Andromeda is such a great game about exploring new worlds. There is no other game that provides the same experience. Scott Ryder is a great character, very different from Shepard. Ryder has no experience and is put on situation he didn'y expect and probably didn't want. The Angara, Remnants and Ketts stories provide great adventuries and mysteries, still far from being solved. The weakest point is characters graphical design and animation ans hopefully that could be improved in sequels. But open worlds, planets are beautiful. Playing through the entire story for the 5th time I still hope Ryder's story will be continued.

I never looked at it as a continuation of the original trilogy, but it fell short, mainly in the ways you walk about. It didn’t look the way I hoped. It felt... old. Like they didn’t fully utilize the technology available to create it. But as story and character are my favourite part of any game I didn’t struggle terribly hard to fall into the game, especially playing it again through the pandemic, like you. I finished the game again wanting more. Wanting to see the worlds I healed flourish, wanting to uncover the mystery of the kett and the remnant, wanting to let the romances and relationships grow. I’m truly sad that we won’t see more of this story. I won’t lie, I loved it, warts and all.

You say that like every other large open world game doesn't have repetitive quests... Even every other ME title had slog quests if you wanted to go for 100% completion. Story could have been written better, but general dialog wasn't any worse than your average game. I feel like the people that seem to completely hate the game and only see the flaws, have rose colored glasses for older Bioware titles and the flaws that they had. Or are comparing them far too closely when the styles of story telling (Good, bad or mediocre) and gameplay are different.

And talking to Samara model. Andromeda was such a disaster, I never touched it. But recently I decided to give it a try. And you know what, it is a decent ME universe game. Mass effect 3 was incredible but I don't know how you could possibly LOVE the ending. That seems insane. It was rushed and didn't reflect the choices you made throughout the series. Also had no closure or resolution at the end, just abruptly ended. All the beloved characters that you met you never got to see the end of their stories and it was all left in the air. Not to mention it created plot holes such as the gigantic fleet being stuck on a destroyed earth with no way home because the mass effect relays were destroyed.

I almost enjoyed Andromeda when it came out, even with the many issues it had. The exploration and combat were great, the characters felt solid, and my overall feeling was "if ME2 played like this, it would be my favorite game of all time".
That's the problem when going from epic scale and desperate stakes to literally fleeing to start over. It makes the lack of closure ME3 left behind even more painful. I ended up more frustrated and resentful and couldn't bring myself to care about much after the Reaper War ended in a summary and the characters I grew to love over years of interaction got stranded in some jungle planet (?).
Most everyone I knew in this narrative world died in the 600 year time skip the game opens with and the consequences of every act in it were resolved, all off-screen, and I was presented with something new, less exciting, with inconsistent quality, to distract me instead. Even if it were game-of-the-year material, it would carry this gaping hole in its foundation.
Sorry for the short novel, I guess I never got this off my chest.

@@earendurvoneinzbern7585 This. I like Andromeda but whenever someone praises its story, my eyes roll to the back of my head. Andromeda's story is nothing more than a bunch of different plot points taken from the franchise's trilogy and other company franchises. There is nothing "new", "innovative" or "different" about it. In reality, not only does it re-use all those points, but it doesn't even improve them, quite the opposite, it makes them worse.
