  • nunc stans for a drummer, four combinable percussion setups and four 1/8'' magnetic tape-loop stations is a spiritual ritual. With the score acting as prayer book or missal, the performer must devise their own interpretation of prayer units by arranging them vertically and horizontally. The tape loops - an audible reflection of each of the percussion setups - aid in a musical pursuit of trueness. The aleatoric and non-teleological structure of the composition forces the performer to personalise the gestures and their own tape loop material, extending the percussionist’s art in post-digital rebellion. Van Wersch and King turn to analog gear in search of sounding consciousness, transcendence and authenticity. The listener is, in their own time, also required to create their own prayer selections via listening and visual attention-curation. In nunc stans, interaction is an ongoing experiment which ultimately questions our associations with portable tape machines and that small, fragile, slick, mysterious magnetic tape.
