  • Among Joplin's greatest supporters during his time spent in St. Louis were none other than the Turpin brothers themselves, Tom and Charles. During those early years, he would often spend many evenings at Tom's Rosebud Café, listening or on rare occasions contributing to the constant stream of ragtime played there throughout the establishment's 6 year tenure.
According to the James Haskin biography of Tom, as well as the historical text "They All Played Ragtime," the brothers owned a stake in the Big Onion mine in Searchlight, Nevada, halfway between modern-day Las Vegas and Loughlin. While it was initially reported that both Tom and Charles had worked there from time to time in the 1890s, recently uncovered information shows that Tom was actually there in late 1906, following the St. Louis Fair breakdown and the migration of several key musicians from St. Louis to Chicago & New York. That given, including verification from an article in the November 24, 1906 edition of Mining and Scientific Press, it is probable that "Search-Light Rag" was named in honor of Turpin's discovery of a copper vein in the Big Onion, which explains its emergence in 1907.
Although the cover illustration itself does not necessarily reflect the Turpin's time spent in Searchlight, this was not a uncommon occurrence when cover artists were often only given a title and no context to work with. Now whether or not this particular rag has any real connection between the Turpin's or not is up for historical debate. Yet what can most certainly be observed from this work is the start of Joplin's more elegantly emotional & serious structured pieces that would emerge during his move to a strange new environment: New York City, the true battlegrounds of the popular music market. For instance, take notice how Joplin gives this rag a "Grand Finale" of a ending in comparison to his preceding works.

This is the piece that first got me into ragtime beyond Tom Brier's sightreading videos... from RCT2

Hehe, I had always wondered if this rag being featured in the game would draw people deeper into the genre out of curiosity. Suppose it turned out to do so. 🤭
