My biggest fear as I've avoided covid for 3 years. The fact that you were honest about your condition makes you a very special guy! So many would ignore and infect an entire ship. As obviously hard it was being isolated for 5 days, something tells me your next cruise will be filled so much positivity!
Thank you for the lovely comments, that’s very kind of you to say. Yes, I am really excited for my next cruise in a few weeks. Sending you very best wishes, David
I got Covid on a Princess cruise last month and was pleased with how they handled it. I had a 5 day quarantine from first symptom. No charge for self-test. I am 70 years old and I had two days of coughing and one day of a sore throat. I travel with an iPad loaded with content so boredom was not a big issue. I am glad that I booked a balcony cabin!
Hello and sorry to hear you were also sick. I am kicking myself because I always take an iPad full of stuff, but left it at home on this occasion. We upgraded from an inside to Aqua Class Balcony cabin at the last minute… I’m so thankful we did that. Can you imagine isolating for 5 days in an inside cabin!! Sending you best wishes, David
I couldn’t imagine being in an inside cabin being isolated I would have hoped that they would have moved you into a balcony or ocean view at least if that happened
Thanks as always Aimee. It’s true and I honestly never fear sickness on a cruise. It’s no different to any other holiday/vacation. Best wishes and thanks for all your support, David
I am so sorry to hear this. Thank you for sharing your experience! Being honest is about doing the right thing even when no one is watching. I hope you can book another cruise quickly.
As a Nursing Sister I applaud you. It was reassuring to know you were well looked after even though Covid and the isolation is awful. Better luck on your next trip.
I'm so sorry you became ill on your cruise! I'm even more sorry that there are people in the world who wouldn't report a highly contagious illness. That unethical behavior is unacceptable. Thank you for being a good and caring person.
@craftergin I agree with you and I am glad that David was honest. However, if I found out that someone else was ill with COVID-19 but had not reported it, I would report that person or persons myself.
I'm a dancer onboard, and I can tell you that even high level officers don't self report Covid anymore. The confinement protocols only exist to give these "overly ethical" passengers a false facade of security. There's no confinement for people with the common cold, the flu, strep throat, bronchitis.... so why should Covid be any different? The only difference is GI illnesses such as Norovirus, because these have a much shorter incubation period and cause a big hit to food and beverage bottom lines. As staff onboard, we of course will make you feel cared for, but we are also human, and we often get annoyed every time a guest self reports because it means more work for several different departments. We just wish you'd wear a mask, stay in your lane, lie low and keep enjoying yourself to the extent you feel well enough to do so! It's not 2020 anymore people.
I wish two of the passengers on our Celebrity Silhouette cruise to Iceland were as considerate as you @Cruise Show UK. A couple on one of the coach excursions were coughing and sneezing so much that passengers around them either moved away or masked up. Several were clearly very elderly or vulnerable in other ways. I asked the couple if they had tested for Covid and they hadn't. I received verbal abuse and threats as we reboarded, which took the shine off the cruise somewhat...
You shouldn't ask people about their health information. It's private. If you don't want to sit next to a sick person, move away or stay home. I was recently on a cruise with tons of coughing people, and I didn't complain at all. I accepted and took the risk of getting sick by leaving my front door.
Disappointed for you David but you did the right thing in declaring your misfortune. Hats off to Celebrity for the way in which they treated you during a difficult time.
Thank you for leaving a comment. Yes I did the right thing and would do so again. They really did look after me and I look forward to sailing with them again. They really went #Beyond for me!
Thanks for sharing your experience! Very interesting to see the level of care you got from Celebrity and unexpected that they would provide you refunds. This is a good example for other cruise passengers. Do the right thing and you'll get looked after!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, I really appreciate it. I am so pleased with Celebrity. They did all they could for me… really beyond what I expected. Best wishes, David
I think you did the right thing by reporting your illness, you probably got it because someone did not and was spreading it around the cruise ship. We went on a cruise to Norway in 2022 with my son and daughter-in-law, my son tested positive (though never had any symptoms) they were taken off the ship in Bergen. My son was placed in a hotel with no TV or phone. My daughter-in-law was placed in a Radisson hotel, while she was able to go out, every morning she was tested. My son was never tested except for the day he was taken off the ship. He said his meals consisted of sandwiches and soups. He had his phone, so he could watch Netflix on it otherwise his 7 day stay in Norway was boring. After being released from his quarantine, they were sent home, not able to re-board the cruise ship. Needless to say, our cruise vacation was ruined as well as we worried about them. (We could not get off and stay with them, Norway would not allow visitors in the country at the time, just cruisers and only allowed them in port if they had shore excursions that were offered by the cruise line) My son was fortunate that he wasn’t sick in those conditions, not sure how the others that were fared. I just hope this does not sour them on cruising.
I’m sorry to read this. I’m very surprised they were removed from the actual ship to quarantine, especially in 2022. What a shame all of your holidays were ruined. Which cruise line was this? Sending you all best wishes and hope you get to cruise again soon. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. David
@@CruiseShowUK , Viking Ocean , it was January/ February 2022 so cruises were just starting back up and I assume that that this one of the agreements that Viking had with Norway. We were on pretty strict regiment of testing daily for Covid so you could be booted off the ship at anytime during the trip. At that time people were still wearing masks including on the planes, so we were pretty cautious, my daughter-in-law works as a physical therapy assistant so had the highest risk of coming in contact with people who might be positive for Covid, the rest of us work in more isolated. Socialization for us two weeks prior to our trip was with each other, no other family or friends, stayed together and away from others as much as possible in airports to get to Bergen (our starting point for our cruise), yet my son’s first test was inconclusive, second test was at first inconclusive but they retested on same sample that came out positive. As I stated previously they were pretty strict at that time in Norway, so much so that if you wanted to get off the ship it would be only on a shore excursion offered by Viking, no exploring on your own, no acquiring your excursion by a 3rd party. Even to the point, that we were only allowed two shops to shop in one port, so if the excursion you were on had a gift shop that was the only shopping you could do. There was no dining at any of the ports either. We knew about the daily testing before we went on the cruise, we just didn’t realize how restrictive it would be on the shore excursions.
I love Viking so much, we had a great time on Viking Venus in June 2021. It was one of first sailings from the UK, post-Covid and I remember masks were still required and we had to take a ship excursion if we wanted to go ashore. I hope you are sailing again soon. Thanks for the comments and I’m sending you my very best wishes. David
Sorry you were ill. Sounds like the cruise line did an excellent job taking care of you. Doing the right thing by reporting it is important. If I had to guess, you got it from someone on the ship who decided to continue as if nothing was wrong . Glad you're feeling better and getting ready to cruise again in a few weeks. Enjoy!
Interesting to note that my daughter was told by her Contiki tour manager not to test for covid (already had it, and was fully jabbed) when she was really ill in NZ 2022. They would have to leave her (21yo) behind by herself in a foreign country. So she dosed up with panadol and codral and soldiered on.

Sorry you were stuck. A week in a room with free room service for 88 pounds actually sounds like a great vacation to me, but I appreciate it isn't what you wanted or planned for. Thanks for doing the right thing and isolating, I hope you are feeling better!
Hello and thanks for watching. I really appreciate you leaving a comment…. Well, when you write it like that, it might not sound so bad…. but no thanks! It was horrible! Yes, I’m feeling much better now and can’t wait for my next trip in a few weeks. Cheers, David

I caught Covid on fourth day of a 12 night cruise on Emerald Princess. I was moved to the plague deck into a stripped out cabin with broken air conditioning that was freezing cold when I was shivering at the start and boiling hot a few days later. I was too ill the first few days to care. Zero medication was provided. Fortunately my wife tested clear, stayed in our original cabin and bought some on shore along with Ribena and a cup as I was not allowed anything to drink from other than a paper cup. I tested positive for the remainder of the voyage so spent eight days in solitary. I was given future cruise credit for some of the 8 days.
Oh my goodness, your comments remind me of the first or second night… I was boiling hot, then chilled to the bone…. It was a very long night. I don’t think Princess treated you very well at all, which is disappointing. The care I received sounded very different to yours. Princess need to do better. Good on you sir! If only everyone was as thoughtful and considerate as you were, very likely you would not have caught COVID whilst travelling????!!!!! How many more on the ship also had COVID and did not let on???? Did the medical team all disinfect the room, themselves and then go into quarantine as they had come into contact with a COVID positive person???? Sadly, our medical staff world wide were the prime transmitters/carriers of the virus!
My Medicare advantage plan completely covered my visit to the medical center on my last cruise. Been ill on my last two cruises with either norovirus or a bad cold. Glad I had a window. At least I only was confined to my cabin only a couple of days each time
Thanks for the comment Dolly. True, I could have caught it at the airport, or on the plane. I’ll never know. I tested positive on day 5 of the cruise, so likely I did catch it in the cruise…. Either way, it didn’t change the outcome. David
Wow. There is no longer an argument for, "It's the right thing to do," because the mortality rate has come down substntially from three years ago. Self-inflict confinement just because you think it's the righteous thing to do is absolutely silly. It's not your job to keep others from getting sick.
I do not trust the official numbers as there was a lot of financial incentive to label death from COVID by hospitals when an unknown number could have simply died for unrelated reasons but just tested positive.
@@smsff7 Whether you believe the numbers or not, initially Covid was causing a lot death. But it's not anymore. It's just a bad cold now. It's not as severe as in 2020, so quarantining or self reporting your illness is only punishing yourself for nothing.
Honestly, three years ago it would have been the right thing to do. But now, even us crew don't report it anymore. Sorry to say but you ruined your own holiday. In 2020 or 2021 it would have been ethical for you ro report, but not anymore.
I would never report either unless I needed hospitalization... People accept risk by leaving their homes. It's not "righteous" to report a contagious illness. Outside of one's home, no one is guaranteed of a germ free environment.
I think it’s responsible as then if you continue with going on with the cruise then you are making others unwell and they may be vulnerable. Looks like you got enough $ to go again

How many more on the ship also had COVID and did not let on???? Did the medical team all disinfect the room, themselves and then go into quarantine as they had come into contact with a COVID positive person???? Sadly, our medical staff world wide were the prime transmitters/carriers of the virus!
Very nice of you to comment. Thank you for your support. It is very much appreciated.
Thanks for keeping me and my family healthy by quarantining! We would never return the favor though. Life must go on.
Thanks for leaving a comment.
You mentioned two people, what happened to yr travel partner?. Did they also have to isolate?
Hello 👋- as they tested negative continuously during my isolation they didn’t need to also isolate.
My Medicare advantage plan completely covered my visit to the medical center on my last cruise. Been ill on my last two cruises with either norovirus or a bad cold. Glad I had a window. At least I only was confined to my cabin only a couple of days each time
Thanks for leaving a comment, I appreciate it. It’s so important to have good cruise insurance, I never sail without it.
Best wishes, David
You may not have caught Covid from the actual cruise!
Thanks for the comment Dolly. True, I could have caught it at the airport, or on the plane. I’ll never know. I tested positive on day 5 of the cruise, so likely I did catch it in the cruise…. Either way, it didn’t change the outcome.
David
It sounds worthwhile getting covid
Not at all!! It’s hideous and ruins a holiday/vacation! Thanks for watching, David
Wow. There is no longer an argument for, "It's the right thing to do," because the mortality rate has come down substntially from three years ago. Self-inflict confinement just because you think it's the righteous thing to do is absolutely silly. It's not your job to keep others from getting sick.
My thoughts completely. Worry about yourself. You're not here to worry about others, especially on a cruise.
💯💯👏👏
I do not trust the official numbers as there was a lot of financial incentive to label death from COVID by hospitals when an unknown number could have simply died for unrelated reasons but just tested positive.
@@smsff7 Whether you believe the numbers or not, initially Covid was causing a lot death. But it's not anymore. It's just a bad cold now. It's not as severe as in 2020, so quarantining or self reporting your illness is only punishing yourself for nothing.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, RUclips especially loves it when people comment. David
Thanks for leaving a comment. Our opinions may differ, but it’s all good. David
I think it’s responsible as then if you continue with going on with the cruise then you are making others unwell and they may be vulnerable. Looks like you got enough $ to go again
Already booked!
Exactly
You do know it's 2023 now, right?
