This actually is almost exactly how it went down in Darkness in the Blood, but it was closer to an 80% chance of failure for Blood Angels, but he of course absolutely volunteered first for it. The rest of the Blood Angel's command staff wouldn't let him though, and instead put Mephiston through it first.
I think calgar felt expendable when he decided to be the first. He was chapter master of the only chapter that could afford to lose their chapter master. He had guilliman
That is how I feel about it and this is my first touch on the subject. It sounds like Guilliman basically overshadowed him (without intending to do so) after being regarded as practically defacto leader of Ultramarines all but name, a galaxywide Hero. That creates pride whether one seeks it or not, so feeling expendable would be the result of that kind of experience. That paired with knowledge of the pros and cons lead to crossing of Rubicon and it paid off in the end.
The entire Ultramarine chapter are designed so that even Gulliman himself is expendable. The problem is, while Gulliman understands that as it was his intention to make it that way to begin with, other people won't share that sentiment.

There was a brief mention of that in one of the books on the Indomitus Crusade. Guilliman was able to process the information at a rate that even the most intelligent advisors, techno-magi, and Calgar himself couldn't comprehend. Unlike the demon Primarchs who are always seeking personal ascendancy and bearing 10,000 year old grudges (as the Chaos gods won't let them move on), the loyalists seem capable of examining the world as it exists today and proceeding objectively.
My favorite Calgar moment was in “Chapter’s Due” when he realized he had just led the Ultamarine fleet into a giant trap. “Haha our fleet is so disciplined I can predict where they are going to be ahead of time. Wait…if I can do that…that means the enemy can also do that….OH SHIT ITS A TRAP”
I have never heard of Warhammer 40k until about a month ago - when I heard Henry Cavill is working on a project with Amazon about it. I thought I would get a brief summary about it, as I am most certainly going to watch it. I ran into one of your videos, Wolf Lord Rho and I have since gone down the rabbit hole with you... and it is glorious!!! @@channyh403I really do enjoy the stories about the space marines but the group that has the most in common with us mere mortals is the Imperial Guard (Astra Militarium) and it is fascinating reading about these unaugmented humans going up against the galaxies's worst denizens. So I would also recommend "Commissar Ciaphas Cain" and his unexpectedly fun, amusing, shady, surprising, and crazy exploits. I think the author is Sandy Mitchell. Let us know if you would like any more suggestions and I will suggest to you some space marine adventures/exploits next time
There is lore to suggest that what Cawl did was not necessarily solely from him. That his 'improvements' were in fact part of the original Space Marine project by the EoM gene rights on Terra before the Great Crusade. But because of the time taken up by making the Black Carapace work and the EoM rush. It was decided that after the Black Carapace was completed the remain enhancements were superfluous and the Astartes were good enough as far as the EoM was concerned.
Calgar's problem is he's judging himself to what he believes are the standards of a Primarch, ones he could never possibly attain, instead of holding himself to the standard of his Primarch who would take a quick glance over the battle reports and see not only Calgar's glories but also how much he managed to accomplish with the chapter through leadership, strategic acumen, and waging increasingly difficult campaigns with ever dwindling resources from an over stretched and unfocused Imperium and be proud of him.
Rho you are simply the best at putting events and characters into a new, interesting context. That hallowed space marine quote I've read dozens of times always gives me chills but it has that extra oomph when you narrate it that can't help but put a smile on my face. Your love and respect for Calgar came through load a clear in this video and as a fan of the Ultramarines myself (my favorite Legion thank you very much) this video was awesome to listen to in the car.
"Firstborn" marines getting uppity about being replaced always makes me kind of laugh.. Considering they were the replacement for the Thunder Warriors. At least space marines aren't being culled entirely to make way for the Primaris. Yet.

I think Robute is thankful Marneus Calgar was the first to cross the rubicon primaris, but I don't think Robute ows Calgar anything for it because Calgar just did his job. Calgar read to me as feeling expendable, his primarch was there to lead the chapter now even if Calgar didn't make it. This was a way he could still serve and make up for his percived failures. So, as a good leader and soldier, he did it first so that those he lead would follow and as always he accepted the risk of death that comes with leading from the front.
I hope Calgar and Lion El Johnson get along really well. I hope they have the best uncle , nephew relationship possible just to spite Guilliman. Hilarious
The Terminator Calgar model is easily one of my favourite 40k models of all time, l remember saving my pocket money at the time to get him not long after he came out. Still use him in tabletop games too as love it too much to swap for the primaris model.

I legit thought that Calgar was going to go full Luther on Guilliman. Guilliman returns, tells him he's disgrace and puts him on garrison duty while guilliman goes to launch a crusade with the abominations cawl made instead. Its just like what the lion did to his best friend, father, and first captain and Luther was a prime target for chaos to use. Instead of history repeating they had Calgar accept Cawl's 2nd rate implants and became a more toyetic marine for the sake of making daddy proud. I mean... the pieces are all there for something interesting with Calgar. He even has a fucking demon-weapon in his arsenal, a heavy bolter that's possessed by a demon.
@@Lomhow From what I've seen they only get mentioned in the codexes. The Gauntlets of Ultramar are powerfists with integrated heavy bolters. According to the wiki they taken from a champion of chaos and restored. They aren't expressedly stated to have a demon in them, but if they were in the hands of a champion of chaos, you know there's gotta be some demon chicanery going on in that thing.
In canon, Calgar did recently get his butt whooped by Abaddon, even with his own Primaris upgrades. Abaddon would be no match for a Primarch, but it just goes to show the difference between the "old guard" champions from the days of the Crusade against newer marines (Sigismund would clown today's champions in a duel, for example), as well as the difference between a Primarch and even the most powerful Astartes.
Guilliman is not an easy Primarch to please because the man is perfection itself from strategy to world building and governance no other Primarch comes close. He built his own empire of 500 worlds and this was before the Emperor found him so impressing him is a hard feat to do you feel for Calgar because his lord is beyond reach in every sense.
Calgar is very storied but Dante is the most accomplished Chapter master in the Galaxy a shown by bringing all the sons of the blood together twice. More victories and being regarded as the better commander then Calgar at the 2nd war for Armageddon.
For a sentient weapon, Marneus was already a badass, among badasses. But for him to accomplish what he did without utilizing warfare... maybe some Space Marines are still human.
Yeap pretty solid argument Calgar is awesome. He is so awesome he would be the first one to go primaris no matter who the living Primarch was. Now compare that to Logan Grimnar....
A little bit of healthy suspicion is good because half of the primarchs did fall to chaos and from me outside it could look like an experiment doomed for failure. However Logan has had more than enough time to inspect the primaris and know that the Lord regents actions are saving Humanity.
Never have been a fan of Calgar, however I also never liked the Ultramarines. With that said, I don’t like how the Primarchs dominate the setting narratively. Are they cool? Yes. Are there other cool characters? Without a doubt. I want more of them.

GW not letting Abaddon kill Calgar back then was such a let down, finally remove the boring Calgar, and bring in Ventris or Sicarios as Chapter Master with new models and better rules. I find Calgar to be such a boring character whos fluff came from matt wards over the top bs. Dante > Calgar in every single way
