This actually is almost exactly how it went down in Darkness in the Blood, but it was closer to an 80% chance of failure for Blood Angels, but he of course absolutely volunteered first for it.
The rest of the Blood Angel's command staff wouldn't let him though, and instead put Mephiston through it first.

That is how I feel about it and this is my first touch on the subject.
It sounds like Guilliman basically overshadowed him (without intending to do so) after being regarded as practically defacto leader of Ultramarines all but name, a galaxywide Hero.
That creates pride whether one seeks it or not, so feeling expendable would be the result of that kind of experience. That paired with knowledge of the pros and cons lead to crossing of Rubicon and it paid off in the end.

The entire Ultramarine chapter are designed so that even Gulliman himself is expendable. The problem is, while Gulliman understands that as it was his intention to make it that way to begin with, other people won't share that sentiment.

There was a brief mention of that in one of the books on the Indomitus Crusade. Guilliman was able to process the information at a rate that even the most intelligent advisors, techno-magi, and Calgar himself couldn't comprehend. Unlike the demon Primarchs who are always seeking personal ascendancy and bearing 10,000 year old grudges (as the Chaos gods won't let them move on), the loyalists seem capable of examining the world as it exists today and proceeding objectively.

There is lore to suggest that what Cawl did was not necessarily solely from him. That his 'improvements' were in fact part of the original Space Marine project by the EoM gene rights on Terra before the Great Crusade. But because of the time taken up by making the Black Carapace work and the EoM rush. It was decided that after the Black Carapace was completed the remain enhancements were superfluous and the Astartes were good enough as far as the EoM was concerned.

Calgar's problem is he's judging himself to what he believes are the standards of a Primarch, ones he could never possibly attain, instead of holding himself to the standard of his Primarch who would take a quick glance over the battle reports and see not only Calgar's glories but also how much he managed to accomplish with the chapter through leadership, strategic acumen, and waging increasingly difficult campaigns with ever dwindling resources from an over stretched and unfocused Imperium and be proud of him.

Guilliman returns, tells him he's disgrace and puts him on garrison duty while guilliman goes to launch a crusade with the abominations cawl made instead. Its just like what the lion did to his best friend, father, and first captain and Luther was a prime target for chaos to use. Instead of history repeating they had Calgar accept Cawl's 2nd rate implants and became a more toyetic marine for the sake of making daddy proud.

@@JuanSanchez-rv9xy i saw it as just a bonus applied to whichever Astartes it was done to. If you were weak, youd be better, if you were strong, youd be uber strong, so I figured doing it to a primarch, say Guilliman, would make him Vulcan's size and as strong as Ferrus. Like a multiplicative buff. The stronger you are, the bigger the power boost. Is that wrong?

@@alastor8091 you really can’t do it to a primarch as the organs and whatever else they do to marines is already there and better in primarchs already. Like you can’t add an improved organ to someone who already has a organ. Sorry if I sound like an asshole

the primaries marines are not that tough I recently read a alpha legion book where alpha legionaries wiped the floor with dozens of silver templars

GW not letting Abaddon kill Calgar back then was such a let down, finally remove the boring Calgar, and bring in Ventris or Sicarios as Chapter Master with new models and better rules. I find Calgar to be such a boring character whos fluff came from matt wards over the top bs. Dante > Calgar in every single way
