    I've stopped watching award shows for exactly the reasons Jerrod expressed (and because, with music awards, I often don't know most of the people winning anything, anyway). Nothing has really changed, despite all these things they've said. But even then, the overreaction of the President or whatever she's supposed to be, crying and needing to be comforted because a black dude called out the racism and no real changes in your award show, which others have also called out many times... it's actually ridiculous. He also knew exactly why he got hired, and he called it out... again, why would any of them be shocked when minorities know we're being used to score brownie points for diversity and such? Why would this woman be crying over something she's doing? Or, in her case, helping to perpetuate. It's also not surprising that hardly any of the Hollywood people sitting in the room understood what was going on during his monologue, many of them also play into what he was speaking about. If they agreed, they'd be calling themselves out... and we know they won't do that, lol.
    The whole thing was just a performative show of nothing, where nothing even made sense (I'm still confused why everyone was mad at the pianist and practically threatening her; even as "jokes", I'd never come back and work there), the whole thing is ridiculous, and it'll keep on being ridiculous because none of them WANT to change anything... which is exactly what Jerrod was talking about. Like, you can SAY there won't be a WW3, but it's not like saying that at an award show, to a bunch of people who wouldn't really be affected even if there was a WW3, makes that true. I just... I'm tired of Hollywood in so many ways. It always reminds me how far removed most rich people are from reality. And, yes, that includes many of our faves. Jerrod was the only reason worth watching and I've watched his clips from the show, but yeah, I don't have the time to waste on the nothing that awards shows have been exposed as.

    I wrote this on the monologue video too, but I wanted to put my thoughts here too. I've been thinking about this monologue for a month now and I think people are misreading Jerrod Carmichael. In 20 years from now, this monologue will be looked back on as one of those moments that changed the tone of awards shows. They're all the same way every year and audiences aren't sticking around. This is trying something different, which is why Carmichael was tapped to host in the first place. This totally tracks with his style of comedy. It's not perfect, but it is funny. It's just a slow burn. The comedy is in how long he can make people feel uncomfortable about their inaction and performativism before he can make them laugh. Usually he has an hour straight to do it and win them back. This is just a condensed version of that. The white people in the room don't want to laugh before the black people laugh. Yeah it's awkward and quiet because people don't like feeling lectured, especially on their big night where they've heard nothing but nice things for months leading up to it. Carmichael's comedy isn't for everyone, I get that. But that's kind of the point. Nothing is for everyone, nor should it be. So he makes comedy for people he can relate to that share his life experience. His people. It makes it hard to relate if you are not in that group and aren't willing to try and understand. What I mean is, if it's hard to see the comedy in this, maybe it's you and not him.

    • @RedHood001-KA
      @RedHood001-KA Год назад +8

      Nothing wrong with that, honestly. We all have preferences regarding a lot of things, and that includes comedy. I personally don't care at all because I haven't watched it, I stopped watching these award shows a few years ago. Ricky Gervais's speech was definitely the most memorable imo.

    • @julianking4793
      @julianking4793 Год назад +16

      That is a very thoughtful apologia, but there is an alternative explanation. Maybe he is just not funny. Laughter is a very visceral, experience, it is one of those emotions that cannot be faked. If he was not connecting to the audience then maybe it was his material that was at fault. Art and entertainment is always inflected with ideology, either sublimated or overt, but maybe this was just a morality lesson masquerading as a comedy monologue.

    • @TwoWrights
      @TwoWrights Год назад +27

      @@julianking4793 Then why did I and others find it funny? If he’s not funny, then no one would find anything he says funny. But he’s a professional critically lauded comedian. • @RedHood001-KA
      @RedHood001-KA Год назад +11

      @@TwoWrightsSo it's more about the type of audience that would find humor in his jokes, which is to say not that many it seems. At least, not for the ones he made here. If a comedian can't make one or two jokes that are funny to the general audience (not the small percentage with certain taste but the overall universally funny), that speaks of either the quality of the jokes or the skill of the comedian. Gabriel Iglesias, or Fluffy, immediately comes to mind. He is definitely one of greatest comedians out there.

    Here were my favorite parts of the globes
    Guillermo Del Toro winning best animated and clarifying that animation is an art form and not a genre which I hope he does again when he wins at the Oscars (hopefully)
    RRR winning for Best Song which was great besides the fact that it didn’t really make up for the film not being nominated for best international because India decided to be stupid this year.
    Justin Horowitz winning for best Composer. The guy is literally becoming the next John Williams as Ludwig Göransson becomes the next Han Zimmer. Honestly even though Babylon’s score wasn’t as good as his last three scores for Chazelle’s films it was still cool.
    Michelle Yeoh winning Best Supporting Actress, I grew up watching Hong Kong action films and I’m glad she was able to get an opportunity to shine once again as a character that’s literally written for her.
    Ke Hu Kwan winning best supporting actor. It really proves that A24 has now become the studio to make original creative films with filmmakers who bring their A Game and actors that most people love because they know how much they love their craft.
    SPIELBERG!!!!!!!!
    Yeah the globes were Spielberg’s night. I loved the Kanye joke that the host did which really adds to the comedy and entertainment that the golden globes have over the Oscars. Spielberg winning best director was well worth it as Fabelmans really was a breakthrough from Spielberg’s last two entries, which are good but aren’t as great as Bridge of Spies and The Post. Then there’s his best picture win which I’m conflicted on because I’m happy that he won best picture for a very personal film that he’s made but also sad that films like Top Gun Maverick and Avatar 2 aren’t getting the recognition they deserve even though they literally saved the film industry from post COVID collapse. Honestly I think the globes and the Oscar’s should both have categories for fan choices like fan favorite actor, actress, director, and best picture. It would really add some recognition from the foreign press and academy to the audience who actually go see these movies and would end the discrimination against blockbuster films.

    For those who think he was not funny, I don't think he was joking. He was calling them out. Every time they get caught be it racism, xenophobia, child exploitation etc, they make a huge production, usually through media, then make a performance out of it - usually by using people from those groups. They then pat themselves on the back, turn around and go back to how it was. All talk no action. Jerrod was not letting them get off easy.

    Idk, seemed to me that Carmichael was so preocupied telling us how and why he got the job, that he actually forgot to DO his job. Host the show, which *coughcough* is not about him AT ALL. I completely agree with all the points he made and sympathize with his plight, but it’s not a Carmichael special with some awards sprinkles in. It’s the Golden Globes featuring him. He hpuld have done 2/3 min about it and then moved on to actually hosting the show. Not sure I’ve ever understood people taking these jobs and then just antagonizing everyone there. If you really think the whole thing sucks, don’t take the job.

    • @micahcook2408
      @micahcook2408 Год назад +29

      I get that but his comedy is very awkward and also pretty dark. I don’t think these award shows are doing enough research into who they are hiring imo if that’s the case, because most people who have watched Jerrod’s specials know how he’s gonna tell jokes and the humour isn’t for everyone nor hits for everyone. His humour is also kind of sad tbh lol
      Same with Ricky Gervais, who is very peckish and reminds me of George Carlin in a way. There’s definitely more “family-friendly” comedians they could’ve hired and/or actors who can just read off of a teleprompter if they don’t wanna put in the time to understand who they are hiring. Lol

    • @BooDotBoo
      @BooDotBoo Год назад +38

      Eh, to actually uplift and make people aware, you need a stage. He used what he was given. He wouldn't have been able to do that IF, as he pointed out, they hadn't just tried to find a black person to host so that the award show could go, "Hey, look, we ARE trying to change, here's the proof". What's wrong with him calling it out? Did you have an issue about all the other people talking about stuff that had nothing to do with their movies or the show at hand? I'm guessing no or you would have mentioned them in your comment. Shoot, someone was talking about another actor living with an actor... what did that have to do with what was going on? Most people had no idea what that was about and could have been an exchange through social media or texts, but that isn't a challenge to the status quo, so it's deemed okay, I guess.
      I'm not sure you really do "sympathize with the plight" if you can't see that this was exactly the right time to do it. You don't get change by only doing it quietly and out of the way where it can be ignored, which is what people who don't want change want people to do, so again, I wonder what your motives are that you want it to be hidden.
