I met Joe Frazier when he was training for the Thrilla in Manila. He was jogging on Daytona Beach and put on an exhibition at the National Guard Armory. He was very classy. Although he lost that fight, many said he won many fans that night. People forget Frazier fought with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It's amazing he survived those fights. after that last fight with Ali, Frazier was done, which was why the second fight with Foreman was worse than the first. Before he made peace with Ali, he was asked at an autograph show by a little girl if he ever fought Ali, He said to the girl and his mother, "The record said we fought three times, and he beat me two out of three. But if you look at him today, I think I won all three."
I’m not sure when this was recorded but Joe began to get even more resentful of Ali as he got older. Some of the things Joe said in his later years were pretty nasty - he’d make of Ali’s parkinson’s and brag, saying he caused it. I always felt Joe’s anger grew because he felt forgotten. A lot of people only knew of Frazier as a footnote in Ali’s life and I think that bothered him. Joe also ended up relatively poor as an old man, compared to Ali and Foreman who both multimillionaires. I think if old age had treated him better, he may have been less angry. A shame that he let Ali spend so many years living rent-free in his head.
@@patrickraymond5855 What does that matter? You're purposefully trying to make Joe sound like a bad guy and painting him in an awfully naive way. For all the stuff Ali said about Joe, he never apologized until they were both old people. They fought, they had a rivalry dynamic, they never made up. Even up to their third fight Ali was calling Joe a gorilla. On a basic fundamental level, Ali never showed Frazier respect. I think he may have been less angry if he wasn't betrayed? What about that? How do you turn your back on someone who openly supports your political stance, and even sent money to help you? Joe did all that for Muhammed Ali. And how did Ali repay him? I don't know how you would decide to excuse bigotry on one level and then blame someone's resentment on another. When you live "rent-free" in people's heads, that is not a good sign. It shows you're the kind of person that can have that negative effect on people's lives. It's quite clear Joe is a beautiful person who loved people. And Ali could've been one of those people throughout their lives. When someone loves you, you don't disrespect them.
@@GrubKiller436 I agree Ali said things that were harsh on Joe but he mainly said what he said to cause fuel to the fire and make more money for the both of them which he did. Although joe helped him to get his license back, don’t you maybe think he did it cuz he knew he would get the biggest payday of his career if he fought Ali. Like it or not, Ali was the cash cow of boxing and any fight he had made dollars. He should however have apologized for the Uncle Tom stuff and saying he was the great white hope, that went too far. I believe he did apologize and they made peace before joe died which is a great ending to the biggest rivalry ever in sports!
If Ali is the greatest, then smoking joe is classiest. He didn't have the flash and dash he did it with good old honesty and hard work. They don't make many like joe Frazier
IMO Ali and Frazier were evenly matched. Ali didn't beat Frazier that last fight, though Frazier's team threw in the towel. They were both beaten and battered by then, none the better.
I had no idea what an amazing man Frazier was. You hear so much about Ali and how he's portrayed as the better man. What a humble and amazing person. A true champion in and outside the ring.
Ali has always been a complicated man. That’s what made him the GOAT. He was human and flawed like anyone else. He grew up in a time of racial apartheid and stood up for himself. At a time when athletes were expected to be humble and mostly let their managers and trainers speak for them, Ali was brash, cocky and completely unapologetic about who he was. He joined the Nation of Islam, which manipulated him for years. But later, he, like Malcolm X, later disavowed the Nation of Islam and spoke out in favor of the civil rights movement and peace. Ali was a very kind and generous person to a lot of people, but he could also be a bully, like he was with Joe Frazier. I think Ali, correctly, regretted his treatment of Frazier in the aftermath of their fights. He was bigger than boxing, which is what made him the GOAT. There’s some boxers who are better fighters than Ali, like Sugar Ray Robinson, but Ali will always the The Greatest.
Ali's treatment of Frazier was a blot in Ali's book, but the amount of good-will and restraint Smokin' Joe showed makes him shine in my eyes. God bless Joe Frazier. What a Man.
Joe's philosophy in life was simple, clear, linear and in line with his religious beliefs. It was the way he fought...honest and straightforward. He was great in the ring and great out of it. RIP my champion.
walkdeep Like the announcer said during the interview, "It would bother you too". The b/s that Ali brought onto his family, death threats, humiliation, his own race turning on him, etc.... At least they both put it to an end before he died!
We miss you Joe. Only wish I could hav met you in person. You were a great Warrior and and honest man. Rest Peacefully now. You have earned such peace in your lifetime.
I met him in 2007. He was at an autograph signing in England. There were hundreds of people queueing up to see him. I was miles back in the queue just watching him. He treated everyone like he'd known them for years. There was something special about this man. He was not your average being.
I still think the thrilla was a draw as everyone but Angelo Dundee ( who never told the truth in his life ) admitted that Ali wasn't coming out for the last round
How can you not love this man? How could the world not see that before? How could the city of Philadelphia think of erecting a fkn Rocky statue instead of one of Joe Frazier ? He was charismatic, he is down-to-earth and a people person, and of course what a fighter. I'm just glad he let all his bitterness towards Ali and Eddie Futch (for stopping the fight in Manila) go If fighters today had a quart of the heart and courage he displayed throughout his entire career, most of them would all become champions at some point in their careers
I couldn't agree more. Not the greatest heavyweight fighter ever, but by far the greatest heavyweight ever when it comes to being a man. They should teach kids in school about Joe.
Joe was a Warm Wonderful guy! I am from his home town of Beaufort. S.C. The highlight of My Young Boxing Career was Meeting Joe, and he deciding to invite me to the Frazier Plantation to workout with him.. At 64 years old now, I Still Pound the Heavy Bag.. I think of Joe everytime work the bag..
@@gilmurrell8789 thank you for sharing that time in your life with us. I to was a huge Joe Frazier fan from S.C. I worked at a Shell gas station in North Sumerton S.C. back in 1974. The old gentleman whom I worked for told me the story of the time Joe Frazier drove into his station on his way to fight in Miami Florida. Back then it was full service and you checked the oil and cleaned the windshields for every customer. He said Joe got out of his car and talked with him while he performed the service to his car. And when he was done, Joe Frazier happily signed an autograph for him. Said he was real Champion and took an interest in people. They just don't make no better than Smoking Joe Frazier. Love our Champion!!!
No other fighter in the history of the heavyweight division had more courage and heart than this man Smoking Joe Frazier. Tougher than nails and yet a man of pure integrity and class. A man who new nothing of the concept of the term quit. The first Foreman fight was a sheer testament to this. Any other fighter except for Smoking Joe would have stayed down and never endured such excruciating punishment. RIP and my you live forever in the presence of Almighty God!!!
Nice documentary thanks for sharing. I been a Smokin Joe fan since I was 8 that's when joe beat Ellis for the title. Met him in the 90's at the Chumash boxing matches and he signed my copy of his autobiography that I brought. He is one classy man with a great family. RIP Smokin Joe.
Ali taunted Joe BECAUSE he fed him. Ali’s marketable mouth made them both a hell of a lot more money than they’d have made without it. That’s how he gave back to Frazier. I’m sure Joe would rather have not been painted as a villain in Ali’s story, but they loved each other, and anyone who loves boxing loves Joe Frazier
I met Joe Frazier at a boxing event in 1993.I was senior ringside physician.During a lull between fights I saw him standing alone and walked over an said hello and introduced myself. He was very gracious and polite exuding humility and confidence equally.Smiled when I asked "may I shake your hand sir".We shook hands and I went back to my post.Great man and someone you would want for a friend.
Always admired his boxing talent, but admire him more now for the person he was. When he hugs his son and tells him he loves him, one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen/ heard. A champion in every sense of the word. RIP Smokin Joe.
I have great respect for Ali in many ways but not for the way he taunted Joe Frazier about being an Uncle Tom and being ugly and all that stuff. He was repeating a lot of the things he said years earlier about Sonny Liston ("he's too ugly to be world champion") and Floyd Patterson, ("Uncle Tom") and back then it was pretty funny and also there was a certain amount of reality to it - Ali was the Black militant while Patterson was the favorite of the liberals and the NAACP. Liston, of course, was a head breaker who was owned by the Mob. But Frazier was a decent man, worked very hard to get where he was, and he had shown Ali generosity and respect when Ali was barred from boxing. Plus, Frazier was far more representative of the oppressed Blacks in America than was Ali. Frazier was much darker than Ali, he actually looked more African than Ali did. Ali called him "ugly" and a "gorilla" - now, if a white man had said that about Joe, he would have been denounced as a racist immediately. Ali really hurt Frazier with his insults, whether he intended to or not, and he should have come clean and apologized publicly for his many insults. Joe Frazier was a good man, a good father and a great fighter.
I read they went back and forth with apologising and what not. But I agree, Ali never seemed to be able to admit that Frazier had him badly beat in their first fight. I had the impression that his success made him far too arrogant to ever be humble.
To be honest with you, I am not sure that Frazier actually won that first fight - if he did, it was very, very close - a lot closer than the officials had it. It was a see-saw battle and one of the greatest fights of all time, no doubt about that. Ali landed a lot more blows that Joe did - probable three or four times as many. But Joe landed the harder shots and of course knocked Ali down in the 15th round with that vicious left hook.
I totally agree with your assessment of how Ali portrayed Frazier, I thought it was wrong. Joe Frazier was a legend and should always be remembered as one of the greatest of that time. Get this man a statue in Philly this year!!!
Steven Yourke you obviousy dont know boxing...Frazier dictated the pace...landed the harder shots and scored the only knockdown of the fight..it was a clear decision..UNANIMOUS..learn something about boxing before posting such foolishness
ah93704 Listen, you arrogant fool, while much of what you say is true, Ali landed MANY more punches that Frazier, probably four or five for every one of Frazier's. Ali was extremely active during the entire fight - his style of boxing was to move back and away from Frazier while delivering punishing jabs to his head and then holding Frazier when he got inside. That does not mean that Frazier was the aggressor or set the pace. The fight was held in New York where points are given for "aggression" and certainly Frazier was the one who was constantly charging forward, giving the impression that he was the more aggressive of the two. But, in fact, this fight was a classic case of contrasting styles - that is what made their bouts so interesting and memorable. Scoring a boxing match is not an exact science and results will differ among the judges and depending on the forum state's rules. If this fight had been held anywhere but in New York, the outcome may well have been different. It was a very, very close fight between to superb fighters. The fight was much closer than the judges had it. In fact, it probably came down to the final round which Frazier obviously won.
for me frazier is really the best of all times , i love his boxe for ever , a so great and simple man , RIP frazier , the world will never forget you ,

Also The third it was a decision just like the first so there's no way he even had Ali in trouble there's only one round he really had Ali and it was round 11 in the first fight The Thrilla in Manila.
Natsu .D. Uzamaki So much to clear up from your post. Fraziers corner had to stop him from coming out in the third fight (not the second). The second fight went to decision (not the third) and Ali was holding Smoking Joe down from the neck when Joe would try to get inside in that fight. Before joe became the champion he was blinded in his eye by a thumb in a sparring session. He hid this condition.
HAHA Good answer Joe good answer! i am a Joe Frazier fan not a Ali fan
"I love people"
Three words. Enough to know he was a good man with a good heart. Enough to bring me to tears.
Bless you Champ. Rest in peace
If Ali is the greatest, then smoking joe is classiest. He didn't have the flash and dash he did it with good old honesty and hard work. They don't make many like joe Frazier
Tattle Boad it was his legacy and popularity that made him “the greatest” his brilliant boxing abilities were only part of it
Smoking Joe is why Philly is known as the city of brotherly love
IMO Ali and Frazier were evenly matched. Ali didn't beat Frazier that last fight, though Frazier's team threw in the towel. They were both beaten and battered by then, none the better.
5 years later and still no one like him !! Nobody with that impressive boxing style LORD BRING US FRAZIER BAAACK PLEAAASE
@@iluvcakes19 Ali actually collapsed on the ground after the towel was thrown .. anyways rip to these 2 legends i absolutely love them
I had no idea what an amazing man Frazier was.
What a Man.
What's sad is kids nowadays have no idea who Joe was. But revere Ali's behavior
nope!....sorry.
@@deadarmd Joe Frazier is the man. He is full of love
ive never forgave ali for the way he treated joe.
That's one of the reason's I've never liked clay. No respect no class. And not to mention overrated
Joe's philosophy in life was simple, clear, linear and in line with his religious beliefs. It was the way he fought...honest and straightforward. He was great in the ring and great out of it. RIP my champion.
'' I'll wake up in sweat, I'll fight him all night long.'' Only one man can say some warrior shit like that. Smokin Joe Frazier.
it's not warrior shit it's sad that ali and his insults still haunt him after so long festering in him.
walkdeep Like the announcer said during the interview, "It would bother you too". The b/s that Ali brought onto his family, death threats, humiliation, his own race turning on him, etc.... At least they both put it to an end before he died!
it was prior fight of the century than Frazier overcame Ali and triumph
Who ever disliked this doesn't no anything about boxing R.i.P Joe Frazier
Amen!
Amen
We miss you Joe. Only wish I could hav met you in person. You were a great Warrior and and honest man. Rest Peacefully now. You have earned such peace in your lifetime.
I met him in 2007. He was at an autograph signing in England. There were hundreds of people queueing up to see him. I was miles back in the queue just watching him. He treated everyone like he'd known them for years. There was something special about this man. He was not your average being.
Miss him very much. A fighter, a champion and a good man. One of my greatest heroes.
I still think the thrilla was a draw as everyone but Angelo Dundee ( who never told the truth in his life ) admitted that Ali wasn't coming out for the last round
Joe's son is a spitting image of Joe Frazier.
Marvis? Oh yeah, but he didn't have the boxing pedigree. But a decent man nonetheless.
+Bill Rawthee he wasnt a bad boxer either 19-2-0 lost only to Tyson and Holmes, won with guys like Bonecrusher Smith.
They should teach kids in school about Joe.
so true like I get y Ali so beloved but I think Frazier is just on pair
My sentiments exactly
He wasn't just a boxing champion, he was a champion at life!!! I absolutely love Joe Frazier!!!
Ill sign any petition to change the statue to joe

Champ, you are an exceptional credit to professional boxing and the heavyweight championship of the world. In my honest opinion you are the greatest heavyweight champion of all time!
Ali should never have taunted Joe. Joe fed him when he was prevented from boxing!
Yes, ppl don't know that. He shit on the bloke that helped him
They said their peace, Ali loved Joe...let it go 🕊🕊
BIG FUCKIN FACTS‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
In fact, it probably came down to the final round which Frazier obviously won.
one of the greatest heavyweights and genuinely decent athletes of all time. RIP Joe, You are a legend

It's clear that parts of the Rocky movie storyline were taken from Joe Frazier's life.
The Shadow Monk Chuck Wepner was another role model for Rocky.
Yup, from Philly and everything, but the fake boxer rocky gets a statue there but THE REAL CHAMPION gets basically shit on
Especially that meat punching scene. That's Smokin' Joe all the way.
The Shadow Monk Philadephian Stalion
Sly admitted that. Joe had input on several of those films including fight scenes and had Joe do two cameos in the series. Sly and Joe were pretty good friends that made each other a LOT of money in the late 70s. They even got each other statues

Kevins Best: Subscribe What are you talking about in the second fight Frazier's corner had to stop him from going out.
And the first fight wasn't the Thrilla In Manilla, it was the third (which was probably the best heavyweight title fight ever).
MrPapageorgio10 no I know for a fact the first fight was the thrilla in manila I am just not sure which on they had to stop joe from coming out the thrilla in minila was when ali had on red and frazier had on green frazier also won it as he knocked him down in the 13 with the left hook had him in trouble in the 11 too.

First thing I hear in this video documentary is ''left hand'' Frazier truly had the greatest left hook
Before joe became the champion he was blinded in his eye by a thumb in a sparring session. He hid this condition. As an 8 year old boy, and the son of a sharecropper, he had to plow a field with a mule from sun up to sundown. His father only had one arm so joe was his dads left arm. All that and being small, even for that time as a heavyweight, nobody overcame greater odds than joe to achieve the highest echelon in combat sports at that time. R.I.P. Joe, you restless warrior.
