1:25:15 From KS Update #46, Isaac's pro/cons for switching from map tiles to books: Pros: - Significantly decreases setup time - Significantly decreases the number of components - More immersive artwork tailor-made to the scenario Cons: - Limitations on space, even with a supplemental book (this can be alleviated somewhat by making the book bigger) - Significantly increases development time to make artwork tailor-made to the scenario - Limits versatility of section breaks and hiding information - Can cause some confusing interactions with destruction or movement of obstacles or other printed-on features. - A little awkward with page transitions - Limits after-market scenario creation (community-driven campaigns, promo scenarios, fan-made content, etc.) with lack of versatility - Random dungeons are also not feasible - I've already promised you tiles
Pax Pamir 2 is an amazing game and production. Nothing quite like it. It comes in at around 2 hours if you have a really juicy game (once you know how to play). It never would go to 4.5 hours! Stunning game though. Tom you must play it!
Yamatai is a great game, and it’s criminally overlooked. It got crapped on because it kept getting compared to Five Tribes, but the two games are nothing alike, so I don’t know why people kept making the comparison. It’s very well balanced, and so you can take just about any strategy and if you play your turns well, you’ll be competitive. I’ve played it countless times, and I’ve never seen a player win the exact same way twice. This is one of my favorites of all time. I’d love to play it with Zee and Mike.
Ooh I do think Tom would like Pax Pamir 2nd. The 2.5 hours is a good estimate for the first game. And while rules explanation takes time the first time, all rules can effectively be summed up on 1 page. It's definitely one of those games that play very differently after your first game of it, but you can definitely see why the game is good with your first play.
The Principality of Sealand is a real place off the coast of eastern England, I live really close to there and it has a genuinely fascinating history 😂
The Principality of Sealand that someone claimed to be from is a small country that no other nation recognizes, it concists of a defensive anti aircraft platform built during world war 2 to defend the UK, I think it stands just outside the borders of the UK in international waters and there are a few people living there and have proclaimed it to be a nation of its own. Its been occupied quite a while I believe, for a few decades I think. Entertaining and informative show as always, looking forward to rest of the list during the week.
Yeah Mike I agree with you that Wayfarers is really good and competes with Paladins(in my top 10). I am a fanboy of the WK series(got all the big boxes and expansions) and I'll most probably be getting all the South Tigris stuff. Besides the games being all different mechanically, I so appreciate the apprentice/townsfolk cameos that ties the games together.
I’m so impressed by Mike’s general knowledge. Most Americans I met barely knew where Canada is, but Mike knows that Quebec is a province and what language we speak 😮 Bravo 👏 👏 👏
We really have to. I remember meeting a yank while travelling, and he wondered "how am I able to speak [my native language] and english" and "how does that feel". He was not stoned. General knowledge of the outside world among regular US-citizens is shockingly low. 😐
Totally onboard with Mike's #43. I like, not love, the other Garphill Games but oh boy did I love this one! Best game from the studio so far. Very keen for their next titles.
Man every time they talk about the series of games including raiders, architects, etc I want to get every one of them. Never had a chance to try any! It sounds like there’s so much to enjoy
Love how you all said my name 5 times 😂, you didn’t say my name for supporting as a backer this time around, but I’ve backed the last 3 years and have got shouted out before. Also, I would LOVE a Rathskellers table, but will most likely build my own. Their tables are super nice, but a bit above my pay grade. 😅
1:27:00 Zee, that was me saying Gloomhaven’s votes are split. Tom's right that they are different enough. The Steam version is amazing! You should definitely try it for an episode of "What's APPening". My favorites that were mentioned this time are: -Mansions of Madness (especially in October) -Res Arcana -Deception Murder in Hong Kong -Balderdash -Ticket to Ride -Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion But so many games that I still need to try.
Thanks for the video! Here are how these games rank for me: Architects of the West Kingdom (76) Hadara (33) Raiders of the North Sea (60) Tapestry (86) Champions of Midgard (253) Deception: Murder in Hong Kong (too long ago to rank) A Feast for Odin (121) Parks (146) Wayfarers of the South Tigris (too recent to rank, but I love it) 7 Wonders (103) Lords of Waterdeep (92) Ticket to Ride (170 for the Europe edition) See you all on the next one!
Feast for Odin isn’t THAT long at 4 players. Maybe 2 hours? But I will say the solo is outstanding and 2 player is just as fun as more players. (2 player is my favorite player count, so that gives Feast for Odin some extra points for me).
Tapestry is currently going through playtesting with rebalanced factions that fix the text on the civilizations instead of just the awkward mini fixes they have now
I think I saw somewhere that Isaac mentioned wanting to make the map books for GH and FH, but the production would take a few years and they would focus on it after the FH launch and the "Monster Minis" campaign
I am with Zee here... Bruno Cathala IS the best designeR there is. On a different note, am I the only one that liked Rebellion more with out the expansion? Are people just full on splurging on a ton of $50-$100 games? I can't imagine that's the case. Are there clubs where people play games together for free?
The answer is yes, people are definitely splurging on 50-100 dollar games. People are splurging on 250 dollar kickstarters too. You get a gaming group together, and get combined access to two or three enthusiasts collections, assuming some overlap, you probably end up with access to 250-500 games. I just sold 50 games and probably still have 250.

@shanerion because those comments are responses to the live audience. Viewers after the fact have no clue what they are talking about. I am just watching these later the same day and after the 16th time I finely realized what the heck they were talking about. Tom has said numerous times the top 100 videos are some of their most watched videos of the year. People revisit these videos over the course of the year. These are not the weekly episode of Board Game Breakfast or QandA where the live audience engagement is more a part of their DNA.
Dice Tower should all try Pax Pamir. AND PLAY IT 3 MORE TIMES! This game is just brilliant; it would only be beneficial for their gaming culture. Thanks Mike for having mentioned it!
Never been to a Gentleman’s club before, but I’m surprised to learn Res Arcana is a big hit in those whereabouts.

Everyone has that one game or games to bug others with. FCM is another one, but it's not a big deal. Eventually they will
But it's a really hard game to wrap my head around. I tried it once
@@hooshyarkarimi9524 They've been saying they would try it for years, just seems they don't value Mike's opinion, adding comments to detract from a game they haven't played implies that what Mike likes doesn't matter to them.
@@hooshyarkarimi9524 All of Cole's games are really hard to get your head wrapped around at first however after you do it is well worth it, he is a BG designing savant, Root, Pax Pamir, John Company, Oath
On the other hand, the explanation is like a cozy pair of socks. It's familiar.
Can the "(insert country) is now my favorite" gag stop? I get its tied to super chats and feeds off the audience, but it really destroys the quality of the video and future playability.
Why does it destroy the quality of the videos and future replay ability? Just out of curiosity.
It blows my mind that Tom hasn't played Pax Pamir considering how highly ranked it is.
Dice Tower should all try Pax Pamir. AND PLAY IT 3 MORE TIMES! This game is just brilliant; it would only be beneficial for their gaming culture. Thanks Mike for having mentioned it!
