When Douglas Adams was asked why he chose the number 42, he explained that it was an innocuous number, one that was not weird or disturbing, one that you would not worry about 'taking home to meet your parents'. if you don't understand the subliminal message, read the book. Or listen to it. Stephen Fry does a great job on the audio.
I had this on While cooking and after the people’s #50 finishes I hear next “hey, this is Ryan Reynolds” I was like “whoa! Didn’t know Tom knew him or that he was a gamer.” Then I saw that it was a mint mobile commercial.
Every time Mike mentions Cinque Terre I have to comment that I also love it and think it’s beautiful. Will gladly play it on the cruise if the opportunity arises. -Trevor
Aquatica is reportedly getting a second expansion this year (called Coral Reefs), so I'd guess the core game will be more readily available again sometime this year as well.
You should do a video on the impact of BGA on boardgames sales. Like Obsession. Wonder if it became popular as many like me learned about it on BGA. Many of the games I have bought are games I first tried on BGA.
Great list, folks! Here are mine: 50. THE PALACES OF CARRARA 49. ALUBARI 48. OH MY GOODS! 47. CRUSADERS: THY WILL BE DONE (not a fan of the theme but it’s pretty abstract) 46. WILD SPACE 45. PRAGA CAPUT REGNI 44. TRICKERION 43. BITOKU 42. GANZ SCHÖN CLEVER (my most played game of all time) 41. FURNACE
Yamatai is one of my favorite games, and might be my favorite game. Glad to see Zee still championing this game. Too bad it didn’t get more love because I know that Cathala had ideas for expansions, which I would’ve loved to see.
Santa Maria was my 47 last year, still on my list at 92 this year. I moved from the only person I know who owns it and never get to play it anymore. Have to pick it up myself eventually.
Tom, have you checked out the custom "scenarios" for Chronicles of Crime? I know they released tools for people to make their own stories with it, so maybe there's tons more content for you
Taught Santa Maria to Chris George at Dice Tower West this last year. Own it thanks to a Game Nerds sale a few years back and Zee's review. One of my favorite all time games
I used to hate the mandatory quests in LoW just like Mike. However when we did take them out one time, one player ran away with the victory and there was nothing we could do to stop them.
I actually open my games the same way with the shrink on the top. I like them looking new and I think it protects the cardboard from the Humidity in Taiwan. buildings aren't as well insulated as ones in the US to protect from that sort of stuff and mannnn does it get humid here. used to live in Florida too and yes there is a difference.
Yay! Somebody understands me and why I keep the shrink on top! Tom was referring to me; he always teases me about my games with the shrink on top, and my little wagon, too. (Hence my dice meeple). That’s okay. At least my boxes stay in nearly pristine condition.
You're not the only person here in Taiwan that seems to do that. A couple of the second hand games I've bought here have come with the top shrink still on. My solution to the problem is just a byproduct of protecting myself from the humidity; AC in summer, dehumidifier in winter.
besides you paid for that plastic. why not use it as intended? also removes the single use element from it. i do the same exact thing. new people in my main discord have asked why i dont open and play my games when they see pics lol @@bonniemacpherson7742
The Cinque Terre 2.0 that Chris Handy has mentioned thoughts of on BGG should be the next Dice Throne Essential. Just need Mike to convince Tom for all of us that learned about it from Mike but can only play it online.
Tom, do you think if you taught me Just One that I would then like it? I guess nothing in party games makes me more miserable than trying to guess a word that other people are hinting at. So much stress, I'm just bad at it, and I let everyone down by failing. At least in Taboo I can hide behind my teammates and let them guess.
50. Compatibility 49. Cosmic Encounter (2008) 48. Seasons 47. Skull 46. The Pillars of the Earth 45. Ticket to Ride: Europe 44. Keyflower 43. Nexus Ops 42. Lords of Waterdeep 41. Marco Polo II: In the Service of the Khan
I actualy find Five Tribes to be way more AP prone than Yamatai. Especially in the mid game when the best moves are gone but theres still a ton of choices.
Speaking of The Quest for El Dorado and that we have the expansions in Europe, I also believe they have slightly different card sizes. Because I got some promos in English that were slightly bigger than the cards in my copy of the game. So annoying!
I've wanted Yamatai because it's beautiful. It's expensive to pick up online. I should have gotten it used when I had the chance. Still kicking myself for it.
It's crazy to say this, but I ended up going to cinque terre in big part due to the board game and Mike talking about it. One of the most stunning locations in the world
@@michaeldilisio557 wouldn't have thought the man himself would respond. Guys, you all need to play more Revive. It is a game that just gets better and better with repeated plays. Next Essen you are all invited to my house for Revive.
No one is going to acknowledge the WTF in 42???? Also, no acknowledgement of the tragic coincidence in Jackie Robinsons #42? Lol a little hilarious accidental play on taking home to the parents eh?
Problem for Santa Maria is that there's a huge amount of competition in middle weight euro games so why would anyone pick the one that looks very bland
I like Monikers better than Times Up. You don't have to embarrass yourself if you don't know a pop culture term you can just read the card... Which allows the game to have more obscure terms too. I never understood people who prefer Times Up.
Keltis FOR THE WIN! I own EVERY Keltis game, and some Lost Cities games as well. Keltis is better, especially the Oracle version. All of these great games, however, are threatened in ranking by Ohanami.
Mike’s #50 sounds like a mini version of Fearsome floors. I wish someone would name Fearsome Floors. It’s a great game for 4-6, especially if you make teams.
Near & Far fell so flat for me. Played through the whole campaign and grew pretty tired of it by the end. Very little sense of progression. Weak upgrades. And as for the story….the disjointed way the snippets emerge seems such a flawed design choice. After 11 sessions I could honestly tell you nothing about the story.

It would be Ryan Laukat who has his own game come up just after the number he introduced… because he’s good at that too!
the end cards have 60-51 results
I got the hat joke... love you guys! Thanks for including me
Yamatai is fantastic - glad to see it sticking on Zee's list. I played it again a couple weeks ago and it's still great.
I haven't seen anyone play it since BGG con the year it came out. I didn't realize anyone still did.
I'd love to see it come back into print. It looks really fun.
Love the new intro's!
I don't generally advocate for supporting Tom, but I got your hat joke at Scott Morris' expense, and I had a good laugh with it. Well done good sir
Aquatica is reportedly getting a second expansion this year (called Coral Reefs), so I'd guess the core game will be more readily available again sometime this year as well.
When?!? I’ve been trying to get this game for years. Since I first started watching Dice Tower and heard them talk about it.

43. BITOKU
42. GANZ SCHÖN CLEVER (my most played game of all time)

I'd love to play and rave about Yanatai, but they only had one print run and now its impossible to get ahold of unless you know Kenny.

Not on the list but shout out to maple valley! We just got ours and it was great! Enjoy it on the cruise Dice Tower cruise
The Spanish, French, Italian, and German editions of Obsession just came out in 2023. So, it make sense it went up. More people playing it.
What flashed during Matt leacocks 42 video?
It flashed twice. Not sure the first time, but the last one was wtf.
Mike confusing the peoples choice with Toms pick gives me Leslie Nielsen vibes. Compliment to Mike! 😂
Tom, have you checked out the custom "scenarios" for Chronicles of Crime? I know they released tools for people to make their own stories with it, so maybe there's tons more content for you
