Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed the story of how I got my SEGA Genesis. Did someone steal your video game console or games before? Let me know! Thanks for watching.
A similar thing happened to me. Some burglars broke into our home back in 1995 and stole a lot of our stuff. Among other things, they took our VCR and all of our VHS tapes, and all but one of our Sega Genesis games. This was really devastating to me as a kid, because the games belonged to my brother, who was in a fatal car accident just a bit before that. Luckily, they left the console, and Sonic 1 (I'm guessing because it had a NOT FOR RESALE label). The console has a sticker on the bottom that my brother put there with his name written on it, so I'm super glad they left it. But I've been obsessed with collecting Sega games ever since. It's silly, but I deep down I wanted to make sure that it would all be there in case he ever came back.
Thieves who steal from kids are the absolute scum of the earth. Had some break into my shed once, but I'm such a messy collector it would have taken them hours to go through it all, but they stole my brother's monkey bike that were about to get rid of as it had an incredibly dangerous pull cord to it, so we found out who nicked it as they lost two fingers trying to get it to run (not a joke)
@@hman962 really tiny motorbike, the size that would fit a monkey. My brother stopped using it as the chainpull was incredibly short and dangerous on it, he had to wear three pairs of gloves to start it, the thief obvously didn't know that. Also, he stole from someone else and got stabbed in the eye in retaliation.
I remember in a psych class I took in college my professor said we remember traumatic memories the most due to how often we replay them in our minds over and over again. Crazy how well you remember this story even down to the David the gnome details.
Great storytelling. Your dad is awesome even before this event. He felt your pain and immediately wanted to make it go away. Thats an awesome father. So it seems sometimes something bad is a blessing in disguise great video
I had a similar situation happen when i was a kid. Our garden shed got broken into and my bike was stolen. With the insurance money my dad got me the mega drive instead of a new bike. Great memories. Still have that mega drive to this day
This video is old now but I just found your channel about a month ago. I had just moved into my 1st apartment. I was about 19 or 20 yo (I'm 38 now) I had saved for the xbox 360 all summer and preordered it in June. Payed it off slowly throughout the summer. Well I finally got it around December. It was sold out and I had to wait a few weeks. I had gotten it with perfect dark zero! (Love that game btw) so I moved to my 1st apartment not long after. Maybe April. I had acquired kameo, fight night 3 and Gun. Perfect dark as well obviously. Someone came in and took my pillow case and stole everything for my xbox 360 (games, hdd, console, controllers, headset and either net cable. I was so devastated. I came from a poor family so this was a huge blow. I ended up thinking I wanted a Wii. It was being shown off through ads. I ended up saving just like I did originally and got the core xbox 360 with perfect dark again. The pain is real. Sad thing is that someone you knew probably did the crime 😢
I know the feeling. When I moved from NYC to Charlotte, i got my Dreamcast stolen by the movers. Broke my heart and I then joined marching band. I was devastated.
That's a great story! It started out bad, and ended on a positive note! I'm glad neither you, nor your parents were harmed. That really sucks that it even happened. I have to commend your Dad for being a great father in wanting to make you feel better. He would've bought you a brand new NES, but also offered to buy you a Sega Genesis. The way it worked out, I can tell you couldn't be happier. That Sega Genesis meant a lot to both you, and your Dad. I love how you two bonded over it! Great story, and great video as always! Oh, in all my years of collecting video games I've never had anything stolen from me. I have let my friends borrow certain games they want to play, but I always get the games back. They're trustworthy people, so I don't mind doing that. Whenever I would let my friends borrow games, I would say this to them "I have no problem letting you borrow the game, just as long as I get it back in the same condition I gave it to you. If you break my game, then you're buying me a new copy of it, or giving me what it's worth." As long as they were ok with that and understood that, I let they borrow my games. I never had any problems doing that.
Thieves are some of the worst type of criminals, because of the premeditated nature of it. Those creeps were probably watching your family until they found a moment to break in. Sorry that happened to you and your family.
I feel you 😭 my house was robed two, we were held on gunpoint wile the guys went around the house taking everything they could. They toke my 3ds and all my games. It was pretty painfull, not really because of my games, but because I came to the realization that my parents worked so hard to get all those things and they were gone so fast... I learned to apreciate things more and the hard work that goes behing buying them, and I learned to apreciate my family more, because everything can be taken away from you, but family will always stay.
In fact the exact same thing happened to me as a kid. These guys my brother knew saw he had a playstation I don't think they knew I had a N64 but nonetheless they broke into my brothers room to get his system (smashed the window) then checked out my room and grabbed the N64. So yeah I was pretty bummed I know how it feels man. Eventually I got a replacement system but I had to wait a while
I had my PS2 and all my games stolen when I was 22 back in 2002 when my house was broken into and robbed. It was the first time I had ever been part of a burglary. Oddly enough as bummed as I was, I was just happy that nobody was injured (I lived with a couple of friends at the time). I am just happy that I was older when this event happened, as it allowed for a more reasonable response. I didn't have a lot of money at the time but in 2007 I was able to eventually replace my PS2.
Great story Tyler! I remember walking home from school, my junior year in college. On the 15 minute walk from the bus stop to my house, right in the 'hood at like 8:30 PM in November so it's super dark, there's a bridge spanning a small bayou and as soon as I crossed over, I was jumped and everything was taken from me! Including a necklace my grandmother (who now has dementia) gave me, and my Nintendo 3DS with a copy of Kirby's Triple Deluxe. It was a very traumatizing experience, but out of it I finally ended up getting a car so to not take the bus anymore, and later for Christmas the recently-released New Nintendo 3DS XL which I still have to this day!
I'll never forget the day I walked into our house when we were burglarized. As soon as I walked in I knew something was wrong and it was strange because there was nothing really shuffled in the living room, but I just knew. It was the night Julio Cesar Chavez fought Oscar De La Hoya for the 2nd time. Me and my mom came home and we walked in and I just remember looking around then immediately going into my room and gone was my Nintendo 64. They just took the console and left the cables behind and the cart that was in it was Golden Eye. I could still see the cables just laying there on the floor of the red carpet in my bedroom. I then yelled out for my mom and she said a bunch of her jewelry was missing. Sad but it couldve been worse, we couldve been home when they decided to rob the house. Love the vid Tyler. Peace!
It is sad what happened to your NES but that is a really great story about how your parents got you the Genesis and you all turned a bad situation into something great. I didn't get my NES stolen but in the summer of 1993, my sister decided to put lipstick inside of our NES and it stopped working. My family didn't know how to fix it so we threw it out along with our games. That was hard but similar to you, the situation got a lot better because my family got a Super Nintendo and Genesis within the next 6 months. The only thing of mine that I can remember getting stolen that I really liked was a Terminator action figure from Terminator 2 when I brought to school and someone stole it when I wasn't looking. My parents bought me that action figure when I was in kindergarten and I had begged them to buy me it for a long time.
I was around 6 or 7 it was just a little while after my brother was born and we were moving and we hired movers and they took most of everything we had including my comics and toys that were special to me but I moved on to toys and then I went to video games and your channel has definitely inspired me as a 14 year old kid to celebrate change so I thank you for that.
Back in 2010 I left home to live abroad for several years. When Returning home after all those years, I found out my sister had sold my PS3 along with all my games and controllers etc. Sure, I could always buy another PS3 - but it was losing all the my content like pictures and videos on it that really got to me..
That happened to our family back in 1999.When I was 5 years old my mom was at grocery store and my dad was at work.My grandma was visiting from Mexico and my grandma took me and my sister to the park down the street.I guess one guy broke the window 🪟 and stole our TV and the VCR with some VHS tapes📼 I was thankful my Nintendo 64 games did not get stolen our neighbors heard the burglars breaking in and he called the cops.
I love you're Dad n Mom, I am a big fan and I love you're new journey of Lessons from life and games, I'll label it. And to move forward with your daughter and her collection is the thing I find most positive of All. Thank you,Tyler and I am learning more from you nowadays in I think like 5 ish current episodes of my retro life. At first I saw you enjoying the youth you enjoyed and the people of definitive interest in you're younger half o life, honestly I was feeling sad about my parents who I had recently and not really recently lost, not my Dad but he was diagnosed with, anyway the show helped me cry and laugh about my previous life, you know what I mean, and now I am the Father figure and basically family torch holder, like yourself and I am learning how to mature through the life lessons that I am learning from you nowadays.i hope that helps with your new direction and if you ever need validation that the hard work you have put into retro life is making a significant,or Truly Meaningful impression on people watching , well it speaks for itself, doesn't it? Thank you my friend and I am looking forward to another Perfectly Surprising and Absolutely Poingnant latter and more mature half, of our retro lives😑😕😃 thanks for helping a gamer and lover of all walks ( and speedruns.lol) of life. TC
Those burglars who stole your nes were like a diploma to graduate from the 8 bit generation with the nes to the new 16 generation with the Sega genesis.
This story really remiends me when I was 8 or 9 years old I got the gamecube for christmas with a bunch of games, and got to play it for like 6 or 7 months until one day I went to a concert with my mom and it got stolen, the burglers snuck in through my window and only stole my gamecube because I guess we didn't have anything valuable. A few months later my uncle gave me his own ps2 and snes alongside megaman x2 to compensate for my stolen gamecube, that's why I have such a soft spot for the ps2 in my heart, my uncle quit playing videogames so I could keep doing it, still thankfulnto this day to him.
That was really sad but it's good that the story did wind up having a happy end for your gaming life. I guess you could say that's who your journey with Sega began! Oh and go figure that would be the game to win you over to a Genesis. :P Thanks for sharing, Tyler!
As soon as you mentioned how your mom asked "what are we going to do about the nintendo"... I knew that, of COURSE, your dad was going to immediately replace it, without a doubt. As a dad, I know that feeling, when you have the ability to fix something for your kid that was out of their control, there's not even a 2nd thought. You fix it. Great story.
I was a young adult by then, but I had my Xbox 360 and all games stolen in 2013 (the one I had gotten as a gift for graduating high school the previous year), along with other things of value. I was actually still in the house at the time, I had just decided to sleep in that morning. I walked downstairs to notice the TV was missing, I ran back upstairs to see no Xbox its usual spot. By the time they caught the person, they had already sold the stuff. My heart sank. I ended up getting a new console for Christmas the following month, but that was the first time I ever had to deal with something like that. Though one of the games they stole was Sonic '06, so can at least laugh about that 😂😅
Also.. I lost my turtles action figure back on a beach in the UK in the early 90s. Shredder. I hid him in the sand while playing and could never find him.. I was devastated.. my mum still reminds me of this time.
Thank you for sharing all of these stories. I had a similar experience, the Atari 2600 was our one and only gaming portal back then. When we got the insurance money, we went to the store and rather than get another Atari to replace ours, the Commodore 64 display really caught my dad's attention, so we ended up upgrading to that instead.
Phew, I'm glad no one was home when that happened. So many horrible acts start out as "just" a robbery. That it is awful though. Glad everyone was safe and the story had a happy ending. (You know, I guess one of the reasons I love a lot of JRPGs and stuff is there's pretty much always a good ending. People don't just rob people and get away with it, good always conquers evil, people always learn from their mistakes, and the worlds are normally just so much kinder and forgiving places. I wish we could make this place a little more like that.)
Our daughter's watch was stolen. It was a watch she got from us at Christmas a few years earlier. Instead of getting her the same model, we got her one that better suits her age. A new start...
I heard about the Genesis and TurboGrafx in July 89 and was blown away that a home console could give you an arcade experience. Bought it in August when it came out. I was stunned at the graphics.
The fact.. out of all they had taken.. they were more concerned about you.. there child and progressing your happiness.. My grandpa would get me almost any game I wanted it felt like.. but they didn’t have the love y’all shared.. a lot of bad stuff.. I escaped in my n64 .. my ps1 .. onto console war after console war I escaped .. I almost cried at the thought. Touching dude..
Funny you had your NES stolen because I had my Sega Genesis stolen as a kid. My older sisters liked to throw parties when my parents were away.. they would bribe me not to say anything ..BUT they always got caught anyways. Well this one time the party started getting out of control.. my sisters were in high school and college kids started showing up. Next morning there was furniture in the pool and my Sega Genesis was gone. I was devastated.. but all was not lost.. my parents bought me a new Sega Genesis and games with my sisters’ savings account.
Had this happen to me as well with n64,ps1 and ps2 games. Sad part is the people that took them were the people I thought were my best friends at the time. Guess they were jealous over my dad buying me all the newest and coolest games. Threw a rock through my basement window and took everything. Probably around 30-40 games for each console. Gone forever.
Wow. Amazing. I remember someone stole my Atari 7800. So my grandma got me a Nintendo action set with Super Mario Bros + Duck Hunt. And also the first Dragon Warrior.
A few years ago, my cousin who’s also an addict stole most of my Nintendo systems (NES, SNES and N64) and games during one of his binges. I have yet to replace them all but it was quite a gutting feeling knowing that a big piece of my childhood was gone. At the same time, though, I was relieved he didn’t take my Sega Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast. Those were my faves. But I did love those Nintendo systems a lot. I’m glad your story had such a happy ending though!
I absolutely love these videos. I was born in 85 but from 2/3 was playing zx spectrum, bugaboo, hot dot spot, dynamite Dan etc then 3 was play grandma's NES until got mine at 4. She loved SM3, Simon's quest, bubble bobble etc. I also got mine stolen while we away one weekend. But ended up getting back on insurance with light gun/duck hunt. So many hours invested in that NES, Rygar, TMNT, rad racer. listening to the TMNT playthrough was crazy because I had all the same feelings like the anxiety and same struggles. I had no idea how to diffuse the bombs though I remember avoiding them for the first couple of tries. 🤣 I so wish I recorded my NES gameplay. I was always a couple of years late for every console when I bought it but for me it felt like release day anyway. Thank you for these amazing pieces of history only kids like us would understand.
I'm lucky to have never had any of my systems stolen from me, but I once came close to having my phone and belongings in my bag stolen from me. Luckily I was able to get away without getting injured but it still angers me that people will stoop to this level to get what they want.
When I was 8 years old in 1999 my parents hired a guy to paint our basement. After he finished the job, got his money and left, I discovered a few things missing: Star Wars: A New Hope on VHS, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Diddy Kong Racing for the N64.
Wow. Had a similar story. My father sold my Nintendo with about 100+ games and I was sad and pissed. He ended up coming home with an SNES. I was HYPE. Lol. I also got a Genesis for Christmas about 2 months after that. Great times.
Yeah on 1997 someone broke into My Home , i was a kid and took My brand new n64, snes and nes. I was blown and sad, My dad got me a new n64, and on a flea market i found My snes with all My games, i recognize it because it had stickers, gladly found My earthbound and Chrono trigger copy with it. Danny Tyler, I love this videos, I feel your family as My own, thank You very much!
Coincidentally my Nintendo was stolen but it was by my step father and he came in my room while me and my friend were playing it and grabbed it and ripped the wires off the tv because he got into an argument with my mom and he never gave it back. I was extremely upset by that but a year later I got a used sega genesis and I loved it so much and that made me happy again.
I was 25 years old. I had a better job (teacher at a college and high school and as a insvestigation agency) and finally bought a ford explorer and a laptop.. somebody stole it outside of a big store... its was a hard moment...
@@MyRetroLife your lucky you had that type of relationship with your dad I wish I had that growing up but my parents never give two shit about me so I was mostly alone in my childhood and teen years the only thing that kept me company was my Sega Genesis I love that thing until it finally gave out
I always wondered what happened to my old game consoles when we would get a new one. The old one and the games would always disappear. This happened twice with the Atari 2600 when we got an Nes and then also with the Nes when we got a Snes. Luckily it never happened again afterwards but I was always bummed when the old system disappeared out of now where.
Hello I will take the oportunity to vent, sorry for the incredibly long text. It's 1999, the worst year of my life, even worst than 2020, because in October of that year my mom died, but lets go back to February, I was on my early twenties and didn't have a job at the time, still living with my mom and grandma, they were both retired and had to cash in their monthly check, so I went along with them, even though they were still perfectly capable of going on their own. After an hour or so, we returned home (we used to live in a small building in the corner of a very large street in Mexico City) we get out of the elevator and I proceed to open the door only to find out the main lock was already open, "I forgot to lock it up" I thought. As I enter I feel something is wrong (where is my dog?) I looked down the hallway into my bedroom and something looks different, I don't see my 36 inch TV, and remember, this is 99, so that is a very large, very heavy CRT TV. My mind races towards tragedy and imagines a broken TV on the floor, dog crushed beneath it because somehow she managed to make it fall, but as I enter the bedroom I notice there is no TV anywhere and no dog (where is my dog?) the room is in a state of disarray, even worst than usual and the TV is not the only thing missing, there is no Stereo (it was an entry level Dolby digital by Sharp, recommended by EGM) no VCR, some consoles missing too, at this point realization kicks in like a tsunami and I yell: "NOS ROBARON" (we got robbed) repeatedly. My mom and grandma are just entering and the door is still open so my screams can be heard by the neighbors My mind is overcome by anger and frustration and fear, I hear the dog inside the bathroom, I go there in a rush and there she is, completely unharmed, thank god, being a husky she probably greeted the burglars in a friendly manner, that probably saved her from being hurt or worst, I check twice, thrice, she has no injuries at all. What they stole: The huge TV from my room, a couple of VCRs, a small 14 inch TV from the living room, the Stereo minus the wall speakers, all of my music CDs, 50 or so, most of my mom's "jewelry" which was mostly cheap knock offs, only a ring with a tiny ruby and a broach with a tiny sapphire were the real losses. The videogame stuff: They took my N64 with Mario inserted on the console, my Playstation, Sega Genesis model 1 with Sega CD model 1 and 32X, a Nomad I kept next to my bed in a bag with seven or eight loose Genesis cartridges, all of my Playstation games which were around 25 at the time, including a japanese Soul Edge and some games that now are quite valuable like Klonoa and Castlevania SOTN. But the remarkable thing is what they DIDN'T stole, they left my SNES and all of it's games, they were 15 or so and among them was Dracula X which nowadays is quite expensive, besides Mario, they didn't took any of the other 4 games for the N64, aside from the loose cartridges with the Nomad, they didn't took any other Genesis games, I had around 50 at the time, they left behind all of the Saturn games, almost 40, and all of the Sega CD games (24) including Snatcher, Popful Mail and both Lunars, and the icing on the cake: THEY DIDN'T STOLE MY SATURN. I can almost hear them say: "nobody wants those, it's not worth the effort". I can only conclude, that they were very keen on stealing the large TV and they were in a hurry, otherwise they would have taken more stuff, or maybe the Sega games looked like books to them or something. The aftermath: While I was closing the apartment door, right after finding my dog I heard one of the neighbors calling the Police, but they never arrived and I didn't want to call them, I knew that even if they catched the thieves, you almost never get your things back in these cases. When sunday arrived I went to my local videogame shop, the owner was my friend and after hearing my story gave me a great deal of credit so I could start buying again my stuff, most of it now used instead of new, but I was not complaining, even if I now my Genesis and Sega CD were both model 2 units, with time and a new job and of course credit, I was able to buy almost everyting again before tragedy stroke in October with my mom dying of a heart attack and my grandma following in April of 2000, during those awful times, one of the things that helped me go through it all was my brand new Dreamcast which I had bought at launch, but that is another story. The things I never got back: The japanese Soul Edge, Virtua Fighter 2 for the Genesis and Street Fighter EX for the Playstation, mainly because they weren't that easy to find and I wasn't that much interested in getting them back, luckily I did bought again both Klonoa and Castlevania SOTN (now used but in great condition) for about $20 USD each. If someone read all the way here, thank you.
Out of ALL the Sega games that could've been on display for Genesis, it was your favorite thing, Ghostbusters. Thats was divine appointment, because God knew how heartbroken his little boy was.
I love this channel and what you do so much! You do such a great job telling these stories and the archive footage is incredible, aligning with my memories of growing up in the '90s. I worry you'll run out of stories/footage but you keep delivering!
That must have been heartbreaking. Good thing Ghostbusters was there to cheer you up. When I was a kid a person who I thought of as a friend stole some of my YuGiOh cards. I was devasted but I think that doesn't compare to gameconsole.
It's crazy how familiar your videos feel with you being the same age as me. Around the same time period we had a lawn tractor and peddle boat stolen, and I remember how big of a deal it felt like to me being so young. It was like a movie lol. And I live in Canada so it's not a local thing haha.
Never had anything stolen like that but almost! I lived on the Coast Guard base in Hawaii as a kid and nobody is there for long. I remember this kid Sid who had borrowed a few NES games from me. It had been a couple of weeks, so one Saturday morning I walked to the other end of the base to get my games back and a moving truck was being loaded up in front of his house. I talked to his dad about my games and he takes me upstairs and starts interrogating his son. "Sid, do you have this boy's Nintendo games???" Sure enough he had them and sure enough they were all boxed up. His dad had to unpack a box or two and dig them out for me. A day later and I probably would have lost them all. I really don't even remember much at all about that kid other than that incident 😂
Just found your amazing channel and have been binging through all the videos. Your dad was such an awesome dude and you have followed in his footsteps. Thanks for sharing these fantastic videos and memories with us
I remember my sister and I were super hyped on Mortal Kombat after it came out. So much so that we snagged the Tiger handheld LCD game so we could play on the go. We didn't have a Gameboy or Game Gear at the time so we couldn't play those versions. We took the handheld game to Mexico on a trip to visit family and it was unfortunately stolen. It wasn't particularly great, but I miss that thing. Great video as always Tyler!
@@MyRetroLife it sure does :( The memory of when I got my first PSP stolen just hit me too. I was going to work at my college library and I stopped to get a drink at the cafe just outside. I must have put it down when I was paying but when I got to work and set my stuff down, I noticed that I didn't have it. I went back to the cafe and it was nowhere to be found. I think I must have set it down and someone just grabbed it. That was a huge bummer.
Back in the summer of 92 my younger sister got very sick. We had to rush her to the emergency room, we were in the hospital for 4 days and when we finally returned home. We found out we had been burglarized. They even took the food that was in the fridge. I was seven at the time I couldn't believe that someone would go through the trouble of stealing food. What crushed my heart was that the VCR have been taken and my Nintendo with all the games. I had to wait three more years until I got to Sega Genesis. In the meantime all I had to play was those crappy Tiger handhelds
My xbox was stolen in 2004 from a friends house, and my 360 was stolen from my brothers apartment (Along with his wii) in 2007. I can't imagine getting robbed as a kid though. We left our doors unlocked!
I remember when i was about 22 and my cousins friend came over and stole so many of my games and it really destroyed my want of collecting video games it made me so sad inside i couldn't believe it ill never forget that moment
I never had my house broken into but in the mid to late 90s, our car got broken into while on vacation. I grew up in France and at the time, we were not used to people breaking into houses and cars, in any case, my sister and I left our back packs in the back of our family car while walking around sight seeing, when we got back, the small back window was broken and the back packs were gone. Our brand new cd players and all our cds were gone, I don't remember what else was in those backpacks but that is why I remember. Luckily enough, I always kept my og gameboy with me and the only game I brought was pokemon blue xD, so that was safe but it sure sucked. Home invasion is worse though, the feeling of your safe space not being safe anymore.
I had my original xbox stolen in 2006. Goodfellas DVD still in the disc tray. That empty goodfellas jewel case haunted me for years! We ended up buying a new xbox. They also stole my family's camera with all our vhs-c tapes in the case. We lost our family memories. Those you can't buy back!
Oh man, I can't even imagine how that must have felt back in the day. I'm glad you saw the light and made the switch to the mighty Sega Genesis. When did you first get an NES again?
I was a Sega kid. My best friend had a Genesis and he would always bring it over. I wanted one so bad, but we got what my older brother wanted, so we had an NES and Super Nintendo. Christmas of 1994 we got a Model 2 Genesis for Christmas and I was so excited (I already had a few Genesis games that I would take over to my friends Thomas and David's houses who had the Genesis). Well the first day back to school after Christmas and New Years break, someone broke into our house and stole our Genesis (they didn't see our Super Nintendo because my brother always hid it from us so we couldn't play unless he gave us permission) and all but one of our Sega games. Shaq Fu. Everyone always would talk about how bad the game was and I would say "Yeah it is so bad that when they broke into our house, it was the only Genesis game they didn't take." But, I loved that game and it was always special to me because they left it. Well my neighbor caught them and called the police, so most of our valuables were in pillow cases in our back yard, but they got away with the Genesis and games for it. Six months later, insurance finally paid out so my dad took us to the store to get a Genesis, but here is the kicker, the CDX had been out and wasn't selling, so Toys R Us had it on clearance and that is what we got. We also got a ton of CD games that were $10 or less, one of which was Lunar Silver Star Story and Final Fight CD. I was able to later get Sonic CD and it came with a collection that had Sonic 1 on it, but I never got back Sonic 2, 3, or Sonic and Knuckles on the Genesis.
I was never burgled in my life, but one time the church I used to attend was burgled. That was like twenty years ago. And who'd want to burgle the house I'm living in right now? Currently being renovated.
Sister and I always laugh about story when we got our home broken into as kids. We were so poor the burglars woke us up to laugh at us but 2 days later broke into home again not to steal but leave us a black and white TV they probably stole from another home cause they felt so bad for us being dirt poor 😂🤣. Anyways Sega Genesis will always be my favorite console of all time.
I totally relate to this. Ive been watching most of your videos and I love em! I was robbed 3 times in my life. 2 of those times my systems were stolen. I had a dreamcast for my 13th birthday from my big cousin and it along with all of our dvds and other valuables were stolen. we were at my grandmas for christmas eve and the thieves broke in and took all of the presents, unhooked the electronics and stole the remotes. we came home to find the tree toppled over and all the furniture was everywhere. They even went into my basement and took my big casio keyboard. i was crushed beyond belief. I feel it was one my mothers friends because months later when i went to her house, i saw lots of the same movies we had. And we lived in the hood and not many people around us knew what the count of monte cristo was. I hate to say it but they were pretty ghetto and not as cultured as we were. Im 35 now and to this day never really found out who did it, but I have my suspicions. Then when I was in 10th or 11th grade, my mother used some of her tax money and bought me a an xbox and herself an ps2. She liked games and bought ffx for herself. I had it for about a month before one day, I told my friends I had xbox and mk deadly alliance and we decided to ditch school so I could whoop them in it. I made it inside and found the xbox and my mothers ps2 was gone. I had to hunt down clues and found out the people were 2 of my best friends at the time. like we were really brothers. I was so betrayed. I found out they went back to the place we usually hung out at and were bragging about doing it after going to the pawn shop. I couldnt believe it. I dropped my house keys on the kitchen counter and they took them and broke into my home when I was at school. if I had left a little earlier I probably could have caught them. They even stole the fundraiser candy my sisters had for their school. Imagine talking smack about how u would beat someone in a game and finally get home to find it gone! When I found out who did it, I put the word out in the street and at school and got to fight one of them in front of everyone at the school. I believe I won and the dude didnt put up much of a fight probably because he knew he was wrong. And alot of the kids were dissing him because everyone knew we were tight and that was a snake move. The other one was pretty elusive because he never really went to school anyway. They clowned him too because we were like the 3 musketeers, really close. He had some bs alibi that I wasnt buying. everyone knew they did it. He even had his mother backing him up. a few months later he was found naked in an alley murdered over a dice game. That sorta conflicted me. I couldnt get justice but karma is real. Turns out he robbed the wrong one this time. It really sucks but in my experience when you are robbed, its normally someone you know..
I remember when my house got robbed when I was a kid and the police coming, I remember them taking the VHS and so I couldn't watch my videos... I was devastated lol simple times but I was just a kid and my folks never bought me a console then
Hey just watched your video on when you got Super Nintendo launch day '1991, I couldn't leave a comment, just wanted to say it is a very touching video and can't wait to see more, I wish nothing but the best for you, your family and channel, 🙏✌️❤️
Man, lucky you had a videogame fan dad, not all of us had one. In my child hood I only had 2 or 3 videogames per year, and only on holidays or as birthday presentes. Till I started saving or working as an adult I was able to get more, and more often. My grandparents saw them as something that could distract me from school or something unhealthy, so I was allowed to play just on certain days of the week.
My house got broken into as a kid, they stole my Super Nintendo with a bunch of games, it was rough, my parents did get me a new one and a few newer games with insurance money. Then when I was 18 I let a friend borrow my Super Nintendo while she recovered from postpartum and she never returned it. Luckily I started collecting retro games again in 2009 and bought of bunch of the games I had including chrono trigger and killer instinct.
Oh man, I can totally relate to this. It's so heartbreaking when your house gets broken into and having your most loved belongings get stolen. When I was a kid in the 3rd grade my Nintendo Gamecube was stolen along with my brother and I's Gameboy Advance Sps as well as some of our parents belongings. That's when those were brand new too and I was all over that Gamecube everyday Lol
Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed the story of how I got my SEGA Genesis. Did someone steal your video game console or games before? Let me know! Thanks for watching.
My children had their 3rd wii stolen few years back
Ugh that’s so lame
Thumbs up for the Castlevania IV soundtrack
Too bad Darkwing Duck hadn't debuted yet.
No. I'd never have stood for that. I had games not returned and threats were made. You didnt fk with my games
Sorry for your loss and for the memories surrounding all of that. I’m sure it helped shape who you have become :-)
Very touching story man, I wish you the best 👍
Thank you for the kind words. It's awesome to belong to a community like this!

My condolences my very fellow human being😊
Thieves who steal from kids are the absolute scum of the earth.
The thieves got what they fucking deserve.
We need a video Larry I’d love to hear this story
what is a monkey bike?
Larry, make a video about this.
Really appreciate this comment ❤️
@@MyRetroLife np homie. Your channel has made me happy whenever I'm down. Love your joy for games and enthusiasm it shines through you in your videos.
I had a similar situation happen when i was a kid. Our garden shed got broken into and my bike was stolen. With the insurance money my dad got me the mega drive instead of a new bike. Great memories. Still have that mega drive to this day
Thanks for sharing that Ryan! Yes - always fun to look back and see the good that comes out of even a bad situation
That's a blessing.who needed a bike when you got the megagenesis
Omg, sad story with a great ending. But on a positive note, your aunt Sharon is absolutely beautiful.
So sorry that happened! Dreamcast theft 😡
Appreciate the comment man!
Thieves are some of the worst type of criminals, because of the premeditated nature of it. Those creeps were probably watching your family until they found a moment to break in. Sorry that happened to you and your family.
Dude that's racist
I feel you 😭 my house was robed two, we were held on gunpoint wile the guys went around the house taking everything they could. They toke my 3ds and all my games. It was pretty painfull, not really because of my games, but because I came to the realization that my parents worked so hard to get all those things and they were gone so fast... I learned to apreciate things more and the hard work that goes behing buying them, and I learned to apreciate my family more, because everything can be taken away from you, but family will always stay.
That’s horrifying! Yes, it does make you appreciate life more... so sorry you have this memory
I'm sorry that you had to go through all that it must have been very painful. I'm glad you and your parents made it out okay.
Eventually I got a replacement system but I had to wait a while
It really sucks - I had a feeling others could relate to video game theft
Still think about my green ranger flute that was stolen when i was a kid.. it hits different when your a kid 😔
Yes health and safety of friends and loved ones always over material things
Man Bryan so sorry that happened to you but glad good things came out of it
@@MyRetroLife For sure it was rough when it happened but like with your situation it ended up working out in the end!
Typical behavior of them
@@B727X Who?
Ghostbusters is the most underrated Genesis game out there. Its also my favorite Genesis game. Love these stories.
Proof that Super Castlevania IV music goes well with everything.
One of my absolute favorite soundtracks
Yes it does
It goes perfectly with this story somehow 😂
TC
We had a burglary and my Atari 2600 was stolen, we got a Sega master system with the insurance money, it was truly a great day.
Those burglars who stole your nes were like a diploma to graduate from the 8 bit generation with the nes to the new 16 generation with the Sega genesis.
Absolutely!
Thanks for sharing, Tyler!
Yep - the story began in tragedy :-)
I can truly understand how you felt, I got the same treatment when I was a little kid, they took my PlayStation, it was a bad day indeed.
I agree A Yuuki - 💯
I was wondering why the Genesis was one of the few items from your original collection that you kept. Totally understand why. Great story.
Thanks John!
This is one of my bigger fears, especially with my collection now. Props to your parents for making lemonade out of all the lemons
I just had cousins with sticky fingers and friends that would "borrow" games i never saw again...
Yep - that happened a lot back in the day didn’t it?
@@MyRetroLife So so much i had so many games just magically be gone, and i knew who it was even though said person would deny it XD
When I was 9 I had shadowman on n64 and one day it just dissapeared I looked for it everwhere in the house and never found it.
This is such a wholesome channel, thank you for sharing your stories! Must have been a weird feeling to experience that as a kid.
Some of the best days of my life! Thanks for watching
I love u tyler dont u ever forget that
Right back at ya Jimmy ❤️
Good one bimmy.
Great episode Tyler! Through a horrible experience you found the positive and discovered Sega.
So did you have to buy it again at the flea market???? Or you told them that it was stolen from you?
Coincidentally my Nintendo was stolen but it was by my step father and he came in my room while me and my friend were playing it and grabbed it and ripped the wires off the tv because he got into an argument with my mom and he never gave it back. I was extremely upset by that but a year later I got a used sega genesis and I loved it so much and that made me happy again.
I was 25 years old. I had a better job (teacher at a college and high school and as a insvestigation agency) and finally bought a ford explorer and a laptop.. somebody stole it outside of a big store... its was a hard moment...
Sounds like you and your dad had an amazing relationship. Awesome to see. I miss my dad. He passed in 2011
Sorry for your loss! Yes - Dad and I best friends 😊
@@MyRetroLife your lucky you had that type of relationship with your dad I wish I had that growing up but my parents never give two shit about me so I was mostly alone in my childhood and teen years the only thing that kept me company was my Sega Genesis I love that thing until it finally gave out

Thanks for saying that Nate!
Hello
I will take the oportunity to vent, sorry for the incredibly long text.
My mom and grandma are just entering and the door is still open so my screams can be heard by the neighbors
My mind is overcome by anger and frustration and fear, I hear the dog inside the bathroom, I go there in a rush and there she is, completely unharmed, thank god, being a husky she probably greeted the burglars in a friendly manner, that probably saved her from being hurt or worst, I check twice, thrice, she has no injuries at all.
What they stole:
The huge TV from my room, a couple of VCRs, a small 14 inch TV from the living room, the Stereo minus the wall speakers, all of my music CDs, 50 or so, most of my mom's "jewelry" which was mostly cheap knock offs, only a ring with a tiny ruby and a broach with a tiny sapphire were the real losses.
The videogame stuff:
They took my N64 with Mario inserted on the console, my Playstation, Sega Genesis model 1 with Sega CD model 1 and 32X, a Nomad I kept next to my bed in a bag with seven or eight loose Genesis cartridges, all of my Playstation games which were around 25 at the time, including a japanese Soul Edge and some games that now are quite valuable like Klonoa and Castlevania SOTN.
The aftermath:
While I was closing the apartment door, right after finding my dog I heard one of the neighbors calling the Police, but they never arrived and I didn't want to call them, I knew that even if they catched the thieves, you almost never get your things back in these cases.
The things I never got back:
The japanese Soul Edge, Virtua Fighter 2 for the Genesis and Street Fighter EX for the Playstation, mainly because they weren't that easy to find and I wasn't that much interested in getting them back, luckily I did bought again both Klonoa and Castlevania SOTN (now used but in great condition) for about $20 USD each.
If someone read all the way here, thank you.
He has a great dad i wish i had so much of my childhood filmed👍👍
Out of ALL the Sega games that could've been on display for Genesis, it was your favorite thing, Ghostbusters.
Thats was divine appointment, because God knew how heartbroken his little boy was.
Love these videos and stories dude. Don't ever stop!
I love this channel and what you do so much! You do such a great job telling these stories and the archive footage is incredible, aligning with my memories of growing up in the '90s. I worry you'll run out of stories/footage but you keep delivering!
Thanks man! More to come~
What a great relationship you must've had with you father as a child. Mamories are the best.
I discovered your page a few days ago Tyler and am enjoying your content. Also your Dad seemed like an awesome person. Love your videos!
That must have been heartbreaking. Good thing Ghostbusters was there to cheer you up.
When I was a kid a person who I thought of as a friend stole some of my YuGiOh cards. I was devasted but I think that doesn't compare to gameconsole.
Yep - having a game console stolen is one of the worst offenses to a gamer!
It's crazy how familiar your videos feel with you being the same age as me. Around the same time period we had a lawn tractor and peddle boat stolen, and I remember how big of a deal it felt like to me being so young. It was like a movie lol. And I live in Canada so it's not a local thing haha.
David the Gnome, Great show!! Someone stole my moped when I was 15, it was an old used thing my Dad had gotten for me, I got it back though
Thanks for sharing these fantastic videos and memories with us
Thanks man! Glad you found the channel and I appreciate the comment
So sorry for your family. It's an awful feeling. I had my garage broken into and my prized motorcycle stolen. Best wishes.
Oh man that’s lame! Thanks for the sentiment
What a wonderful channel, just absolutely wonderful. Thank you for all your videos that take us down memory lane.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate it
Awesome story and a very lucky kid you were! If this had happened to me, my parents would have just said bad luck.
Thanks for sharing that buddy. Man getting your game stolen is no fun
Good thing they didn’t steal the camera or the home videos
Oh man yes
Back in the summer of 92 my younger sister got very sick. We had to rush her to the emergency room, we were in the hospital for 4 days and when we finally returned home. We found out we had been burglarized. They even took the food that was in the fridge. I was seven at the time I couldn't believe that someone would go through the trouble of stealing food. What crushed my heart was that the VCR have been taken and my Nintendo with all the games. I had to wait three more years until I got to Sega Genesis. In the meantime all I had to play was those crappy Tiger handhelds
Tiger handhelds were an abomination. I’m so sorry man!
My xbox was stolen in 2004 from a friends house, and my 360 was stolen from my brothers apartment (Along with his wii) in 2007. I can't imagine getting robbed as a kid though. We left our doors unlocked!
I have the same shirt, I must have got it 10 years ago, I still wear it sometimes. Great vid as always
Thanks Andrew!
I remember when my BMX got stolen it broke my heart ❤️
So lame Keith!
We had a home invasion, but their main focus was on stealing my stepdads guns. Makes you feel vulnerable even in your own home.
Anyways Sega Genesis will always be my favorite console of all time.
doesnt sound true at all but ok...
DUDE I remember those slips at toys are us! that was an amazing time to be a kid!
what an amazing story!! thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!!
Glad your still making awesome videos Tyler!!!!
Thank you Christopher! Really appreciate that
Man, lucky you had a videogame fan dad, not all of us had one.
OMG I haven’t thought of David the gnome in a long time I remember that cartoon wow
bro,I love that Sega genesis box at the background 😍reminds me my childhood
Thanks man it’s one of the pieces from my original collection that I still have!
I’m on a ‘My Retro Life’ kick right now.
Brooooo! We had a house burglary and had our SNES stolen.
We were broke tho so we got nothing in return 🤣
Oh man, I can totally relate to this. It's so heartbreaking when your house gets broken into and having your most loved belongings get stolen. When I was a kid in the 3rd grade my Nintendo Gamecube was stolen along with my brother and I's Gameboy Advance Sps as well as some of our parents belongings. That's when those were brand new too and I was all over that Gamecube everyday Lol
Sorry that happened to you! I am amazed at how many have commented saying this sort of thing happened to them too
Shit, I thought your brother had been stolen when I first read that.
