When I find myself stuck in overthinking mode, I get out of it by employing the distraction technique. I usually grab my phone to play a game or to watch RUclips Shorts. I'd go so far as to say that if it's something that a person with a short attention span would enjoy (like watching Spongebob), it'll probably help the most.
Expression, distraction and numbing is a band aid. We need to face our triggers and relax into it (I’m ok, I’m safe, I can handle this with grace). Only then can the brain create new connections and feel less triggered next time.
I do all of those things, and so far nothing has worked to help me out of it. It usually happens when im doing university assignments: I start overthinking abot whether I'll miss my deadline, even when I have weeks to do the assignment. I also overthink when im looking at research papers and textbooks for referable sources: "what if I'm not reading the right paper?", "What if the information I need isn't in here and im just wasting time with this one?". This makes me spiral into expecting to fail because I feel im doing things wrong or im not good enoigh to succeed. When I try to distract myself with a different activity my thoughts become "while I'm busy trying to bring myself out of this mindset I'm not busy doing my assignments, which is what I should be doing!". It goes on and on and on.
You do great work. Thank you, Doctor. May I ask what state you work in? By the way, have you ever worked with Dr. Daniel Amen? I think you and he would make a great team.

The distraction technique tends to help me, like playing a game on my phone or watching RUclips Shorts. Perhaps it could work for you?
