As Eiki Shiki the Judge herself, I completely agree with his statement. PoFV is the only Touhou game with Eiki playable, thus making it the best Touhou game ever. (Definitely not based)
I think it’s one of the saddest games for its story. Sprits from the outside world come to Gensokyo to see the flowers. Plus the game was released in 2005, and if you subtract 60 from Eiki’s theme (fate of sixty years) you get 1945. The year the pacific war between Japan and the USA ended. Just imagine if these spirits were just innocent lives who perished from WWII.
I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be timed 60 years after the end of world war 2... quite possibly in relation to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki...
I remember playing this game while recovering from an arm injury I got and I kept wanting to play the game several times over despite my entire wrist telling me to stop. It's really fun You jumpscared me with that btw
In terms of lore, TH9 is one of the most expansive. Where most games have ~4 pc's x 6 stages ≈ 24 character interactions, TH9 has 16 pc's x 13 stage ≈ 208 different character interactions. Can get a lot better idea of each character's personality, drives, and flaws in PoFV than most games.
TH9's calculation you made is wrong. first of all, not all character interactions are unique, and you don't interact with all characters in a run. second of all, except for the 2 last stages or so, most dialogue is WAY shorter than usual... like, barely a couple of lines.
@@ssjcrafter8842 That's what the ≈ is used for, rough approximation. accidentally included all the Prismrivers. Going back should be ~14x11≈154 unique dialogue options.
Solo Touhou players don't understand the peak that is this game, I was lucky enough to be in university when it dropped and had a group of, competitive fighting game playing, Lunatic mode beating weebs to play against with local coop and it firmly cemented this game as a top tier title in my mind.
PoFV was my first ever purely because i was obsessed with flowering night and sakuya in general and i never thought about any of this till i played EoSD earlier this year, i'd still go as far as saying it's my favorite tho since there's just something about it i miss when playing more traditional touhou games that i can't quite put my finger on only thing i don't miss is the tap firing, my hands would die after playing even just a single round lol
I love that somebody mentioned the inspirations for this game existance, im a huge Twinkle Star Sprites fan and i used to play the fuck out of that game with my sister (emulated of course) and i will always love PoFV because 2 reasons: -One because well it reminds me of Twinkle Star Sprites so much and how insanely fun is to play against others and learning how to deal tons of damage and combos fast, and also the unpreditability of the game that keeps you on your toes all the time. -Two, because it reminds me of the old pre windows era games, where they were more about "there is 6 badguys reimu! go save the day!" and then hiliarity insues and in the end there is a nonsensical and dumb ending that might have something to do with what's going on in the background or its just a dumb one off thing that characters does as a joke in the end. I do love the more serious, lore driven games we got after this one, but i really like touhou when it doesnt takes itself too seriously and just goes with the motions, see what sticks and what not, have a good healty laugh at some jokes, i hope Touhou 19 brings back some of that because i really want it to have some fun and self awareness of the silly and dumb stuff and just be what Touhou was before, a silly fairytale-like story that just wants to have some fun while having some interesting lore here and there.
Preach!~ I love to see that PoFV love! The diverse cast and the laid-back atmosphere are definitely its prime selling points in my opinion! I totally agree with what you said about the laid-back vibes embodying the core character of the Touhou series, or at least what I personally nostalgically see as such. At the same time, it seems worth noting that there are some surprisingly serious undertones about the "incident" -- with the 60-year cycle relating to war and other disasters in the outside world. In one SCoOW article, ZUN commented that PoFV was "the right time to introduce the outside world and meta elements into the game," and I appreciate it for possibly being that sort of transition point in his storytelling approach, because I do value those qualities of mature messaging in the newer games too. (Actually, maybe EoSD was the only mainline Windows game that was ever 100% unserious in its themes?) The contrast, itself, of meaningful undertones yet a laid-back overall package that really just encourages you to enjoy it... that might be the most Touhou-like thing of all to me, and PoFV is just a really good and unique balance of all that good Touhou-y stuff, even despite its unconventional formatting. As you nicely explained! And I'll keep your gameplay tips in mind if I manage to pick it up again as dedicatedly as I used to be~
3:37 Yeah, that's Tewi. 11:33 Reimu:"You did it! You did it before!" Yuuka:"This isn't Touhou 4, Reimu."(Btw, it is. It is the fourth mainline Windows Era-game, lmao. Plus, her PC98 version was last seen in a game of this style. It will remain my favorite reference until the end of time and it would only be more amazing if ZUN somehow did it unintentionally) 12:34 Spooky Reimu staying behind. 12:38 Marisa definitly has issues. But instead of giving proper therapy, this witch simply gets told "be better or rip" 12:45 Sakuya when she dies in cold space because her fate is somehow possible maybe connected to the moon in some way: 12:51 Youmu:"What is judgement? Can I cut it?" 13:19 I mean, yeah. They are technically not even real people. I just imagine this being like telling a robot that it is doomed because it follows its programming.(Actually, that reminds me of a character from Megaman looking completely defeated and done when confronted with the exact same conflict) 14:43 I guess TH3 is the mama-black sheep then because it stands out even more than this Phantasmagoria-game does. Like, being so incredibly disconnected from the rest of the series that the only reminders of its existance are basically just the times concepts mentioned in the game were reused later. And this is not even usual PC98 to windows-disconnectivity, even inside PC98 itself, it feels more akin in relevance to dolls in pseudo paradise in that it could vanish completely and nobody besides the hardcore fans would notice it is gone. 18:40 Man, that certainly did not age well. I mean, TH19 certainly has its lovers, but the general consensus right now seems to be that it is fun to meme about how it is similar to the fanmade TH3 remake...except possibly being even more messy.
None of the PC98 games are really that interconnected, though, if at all. A fucking midboss appears more than most PC98 characters (hi Hikariko). If any game is incredibly disconnected, it's the first one really. Pretty sure ZUN never meant to release it and he just happened to use Mima in the next game. Like shit, there's like no dialogue in first game aside from the ending and the story is non-existent even for PC98.
I unironically think that the game you showed towards the end- Unconnected Marketeers- is the best game for the exact same reasons you put out. The Ability Card Trade isn’t as much of a hectic incident compared to what’s going on, and it pays a heavy homage to the cast with its large amount of Ability Cards referencing characters from across the series. It’s also bold in its design through that very system, giving the game a level of replayability that IMO not even PoFV had in a long time; UM’s roguelike elements make it quite the standout compared to the rest. And the music, GOD. From Shower of Strange Occurrences to Fantastic Underground Railway Network and from Smoking Dragon to Immemorial Marketeers and so on, this entry has probably the best overall balance and variety between its tracks. The quality of the songs in this game are just a step above some of the previous entries in this series, which usually have been leaning hard into one or the other (looking at you, Keiki’s theme). And its characters are also very cool, as well, seeing archetypes that not only fit well into Gensokyo at large, but also they’re refreshing in that they don’t exactly rehash much but add a modern spin to the old character archetypes the series sort of had. UM, by your regards, is as close to PoFV as a main shooter can get (at least not until UDoALG), and it is also my favorite as well!
Also I don't really like the themes from UM that much and I don't think its variety is that great. My favorite theme overall is probably "The Great Fantastic Underground Railway Network" as you mentioned and second is probably "Lunar Rainbow". Some of its themes, such as "A Shower of Strange Occurrences" and "The Cliff Hidden in Deep Green" to me sound a little... Hm.. how do I say this without upsetting someone... generic? Compare this to stage one of SoEW, LLC, EoSD, PCB, IN, MoF, SA, UFO, TD and LoLK which are pretty great. It's been a trend since 14 to have disappointing stage 1 themes. Also, I prefer my final boss theme to be "Final Bossy" not whatever you would consider Chimata's theme, fun, I guess.
Eiki needs more screen time , she only apeared twice in games PoFV and one of the spin offs, she is pretty flanderized in Fannon , she is like a harsh mother. she calls pepole out for there sins, but also HIGHLY suggest they change or else they may go to hell . Cirnos story is a great show of Eikis character
Fun Fact, Eiki is Hated because People Like Projection, And Cannot Take characters who are just Correct on Everything. Also, Dear Autocorrect, I spotted that.
0:16 Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom is awesome. It has a unique gamemode (the pointdevice mode), easily the best villain in the franchise, some of the best boss fights, and one of if not the best story.
I think PoFV takes a little bit time to understand the game mechanic, thus cause not much people want to try. And I agree what you say, the soundtrack of PoFV is criminally underrated. Plus the monologue on the boss attack warning is just too cool, saddly that didn't happen in TH19.
As someone whose favorite is LoLK, I like it because it makes you feel like a total daredevil. I ended up capturing the final spell because I had no bombs and refused to reset the run, and it absolutely fucking JAMMED when I finally managed it. Also Seiran's in there and she's my favorite touhou
imagine being able to cancel bullets and not just having to dodge them without focus, hoping AI dies before you run out of bombs and get swamped with humanly unreactable waves [laughs in PoDD]
I didn't play much of the Touhou game, even bullet hell in general. Having a friend introducing me to the games by putting me in front Flandres was probably no the best way to discover this gameplay. But I still enjoy the world, the characters and the memes of this colorful franchises. I will say my favorite of the 4 games I played, was The great Fairies Wars that I play a lot during a convention. It was the second Touhou I tried and I had a blast icing everything.
Suwa, i might play this game again but i need a very important tip and tech on it: holding the shoot button charges a shot instead of letting me fire continuously, how do i play this game without having to mash my keyboard violently? I fear neither my hand nor the keyboard itself could survive a full run of this game's story
Watch a rurorulu replay A better answer is to play around that feature... you really don't want to continuously mash fire as that will kill your chains and combos. Maybe it's useful for bosses and Lily? (But you're better off throwing back bosses and l2'ing Lily). What I'm saying is that you really don't want to play around spamming your shot; use it wisely to combo fairies to throw back pellets at the enemy!
@@Suwawako so i'm better off charging L1~2 instead of a basic shot whenever possible? that might actually be reasonable, i'm just asking to make sure we're on the same page lol. I think this is a huge concern a lot of people might have with this game - they might simply be trying to litter the screen with smaller bullets just like a typical touhou game
How do you think TH9 stacks up to 19 since they're both built around the "versus" mechanics? TH19 had some weird design choices that I think make the game feel a little underwhelming compared to TH9 and 3
I just want to tell you about my opinion about the touhou game, especially what I like: Touhou 12 (UFO), what is it... I just like the character models, their background stories (especially byakuren, I'm sad when I read the background and listen to the music) ) and for sure the theme of the music is perfect for me, the thing that makes me feel comfortable is..in every failure that I try in completing my 1cc stage, I feel closer to his character, and in the end, I manage to beat him and... yahhh, so far, byakuren is the key that makes me favorite touhou 12 as my best touhou game (for now)
i also like touhou 7 because HAHA old funny forever 17 year gap ( i like yukari :) for the first time i see her), but not managed to meet her cause skill issue lol, maybe next story
erm the moment he post the list of the 9th touhou game. i see the second splitscreen touhou game "The Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream right there". how is it a black sheep. i don't know of a fighting game befor 7.5.
Also where is Immaterial and Missing Power on that list. Well i guess zun did not make it. And that makes The Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream Even more valid
I am back to standing by my original comment. After seeing the entire video. Go PLAY THE PC 98 GAMES skip "Highly Responsive to Prayrs" It has lore but gp(game play) is no cap Fr fr
(Haven't watched the video yet, but gonna post what I've wrote long before while views are hot) (Hey it's my doc on 4:22, check the link at the end of this comment) An amazing game even if flawed at some points (some bugs, some balance, but still is very solid in overall). A great genre about which the world simply doesn't knows, that is vs shmup, it is tons of fun and skill, very similar to fighting games. Maybe one day someone will make a better, modern implementation of such, and it will blow up or at least gather an active community. I don't have much faith in ZUN and 19 but maybe, maybe... I wish to do it myself inside my own fantasy universe, but how many years it will take huh... Will be sad if someone will make it a lot sooner than me, and it will blow up with many (poor) clones. Myself I have 1500+ pvp matches in PoFV, also wrote PoFV Fundamentals\PvP guide, participated in many tournaments, though I'm not among the very top players, just very high skill one, there is plenty of more crazy guys, but it's mainly because they just dodge better. The latter is a big deal though, since it's 50% of success in PoFV and has limitless ceiling, and which AI proves. Beside fun and skill there is obviously enough of random going on too, but it's not that bad as it may appear. As to AI then yeah, vs mode Lunatic one is a total bs unless you abuse Aya or Medicine, but it's a good practice of survival for you, even if bot makes unreasonable decisions about his meter use. You can get SpoilerAl and force the bot to use only l2 spells though, or make the bot\yourself invincible for a better practice for example. EU PoFV server, pretty dead lately, golden times have passed, but you still can find someone to play with or to discuss the game: discord.gg/2QPPPpE My PoFV guide, includes tier lists and character analysis: docs.google.com/document/d/1IHtZb8-LbbDEK526JR7u9_HykrwxTcDI
About vs schmups, the game that instantly appears in my mind when I hear this is Maiden & Spell, which is highly influenced by Touhou Project, but except for the fact that it's a schmup where you play against other player, it has pretty much nothing in common with PoFV
I agree, the best game was touhou 9, since you have the same chance to win as the computer. :) And it has much more randomness than the others, those require less reflexes and much, much more memory. :D
I have an unusual idea... Maybe (Mainly because of 4th September) you could make a retrospective video about "Angry Birds Stella"? It is also a black sheep of its series. It would be awesome to see it Can I have a Heart?
There is an option to let you hold the attack button by replacing the charge with focus (so you just focus while attacking instead of stopping the attack to charge) although it feels weird for me so i dont use it, but try it out to see if it helps.
Tbh, it is easy to forget because the game's legacy is basically "the game you play Mima in"...except for the other game you play her in, that being TH5. So yeah, it doesn't really have a legacy besides "being the first" at a lot of things and having concepts mentioned in it recycled for TH8 and the Maribel-stories.
I am not fan of the gameplay, read up the lore and went for mountain of faith instead (I am a new 2hu player) Edit: but this game's soundtrack is just *chef's kiss*
Only once people fixed the collission detection to make dodging stuff not effectively random.(which probably won't be for a long time because people be like "But that would break replay-compatibility! 😨")
Most of the love for the classic era tends to come from the first three Windows games. Heck, some people even skip this game and move straight on to Mountain of Faith.
this video is a lot better than past ones, but your pronunciation of zun is still painful, like intentionally mispronouncing characters is one thing but someone's name? that's legitimately disrespectful. dude created the series that your entire channel is built around. the least you can do is pronounce his name correctly, right?
@@Suwawako that's cool and all, but it's still the way his name is pronounced. most people don't really like it when people intentionally pronounce their name wrong. and i know this may sound silly, but there's definitely a considerable amount of fans who learn things via RUclips videos like this, and because of that, a lot of content creators feel that they have a duty of care to avoid misinforming people, even if it's just a running joke.
@@ephraimium6755I 100% agree. PoDD should be between PoFV and TSS(wayyy better but much harder than PoFV). I am not at all hyped for UDoALG at all, but hey at least the music is cool so far I guess.

I appreciate it bc it was my first 2hu game
PoFV has Eiki, of course it is. :‑D
Online play is just a pain that's all I find bad honestly
14:09.... For... whut the HELL? Dayum!
"Secretly" the game is NOT subtle about how good it is
obviously phantasmaGODria of Chadwer view
Suwa, i might play this game again but i need a very important tip and tech on it: holding the shoot button charges a shot instead of letting me fire continuously, how do i play this game without having to mash my keyboard violently? I fear neither my hand nor the keyboard itself could survive a full run of this game's story
I recommend a controller specifically for this one. Makes it way more manageable.
Watch a rurorulu replay
A better answer is to play around that feature... you really don't want to continuously mash fire as that will kill your chains and combos.
PoFV is peak Touhou even with its flaws. The EoSD glue eaters are missing out
How do you think TH9 stacks up to 19 since they're both built around the "versus" mechanics?
Can you make a len'en 4 Brilliant pagoda or haze castle Tutorial? i dont get this Game its so Strange
Bro you be looking good👍
It has eiki in it so I enjoy it. Best touhou
I'll watch the rest of this later but I swear to god if you don't mention Twinkle Star Sprites I will be angry.
ngl I thought this was going to be on subterranean animism
Touhou 9,5 was my first touhou
The question is if Touhou 19 can beat this game since it's gonna be another Phantasmagoria game.
Face cam intro, cool !
erm the moment he post the list of the 9th touhou game. i see the second splitscreen touhou game "The Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream right there". how is it a black sheep. i don't know of a fighting game befor 7.5.
Also where is Immaterial and Missing Power on that list. Well i guess zun did not make it. And that makes The Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream Even more valid
OK i was Kinda hoping you would not regencies pre windows content. But i'll take the loss this time
I am back to standing by my original comment. After seeing the entire video. Go PLAY THE PC 98 GAMES skip "Highly Responsive to Prayrs" It has lore but gp(game play) is no cap Fr fr
Decent video, not enough Medicine.
(Haven't watched the video yet, but gonna post what I've wrote long before while views are hot)
(Hey it's my doc on 4:22, check the link at the end of this comment)
An amazing game even if flawed at some points (some bugs, some balance, but still is very solid in overall).
EU PoFV server, pretty dead lately, golden times have passed, but you still can find someone to play with or to discuss the game: discord.gg/2QPPPpE
My PoFV guide, includes tier lists and character analysis: docs.google.com/document/d/1IHtZb8-LbbDEK526JR7u9_HykrwxTcDI
About vs schmups, the game that instantly appears in my mind when I hear this is Maiden & Spell, which is highly influenced by Touhou Project, but except for the fact that it's a schmup where you play against other player, it has pretty much nothing in common with PoFV
Ya
I agree, the best game was touhou 9, since you have the same chance to win as the computer. :) And it has much more randomness than the others, those require less reflexes and much, much more memory. :D
I'm biased towards this game because it's the first Touhou game I've ever beaten
best music fr
this game is pretty cool ngl
Called it!
Nine is pretty cool. 17 is my certified favourite though.
17 is GOATED for sure: story, music, gameplay, characterization. Masterpiece

@@ShaneusSnake>gameplay is GOAT
>literally just sleep-inducing streaming and hyper spamming
LoLK is my fav game in the series because the pointadvance system lets me do stupid shit without any consequences.
I have an unusual idea... Maybe (Mainly because of 4th September) you could make a retrospective video about "Angry Birds Stella"? It is also a black sheep of its series. It would be awesome to see it
Can I have a Heart?
It is a pain to the fingers from the constant clicking
For me it became unplayable after 1 hour of gameplay
Tendon pain is no joke for me
There is an option to let you hold the attack button by replacing the charge with focus (so you just focus while attacking instead of stopping the attack to charge) although it feels weird for me so i dont use it, but try it out to see if it helps.
EoSD because Rank and RNG.
I feel like you disrespected Touhou 3 PoDD (Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream) by just not mentioning it.
I 1000000000000% AGREE
REAL
why is liking WBaWC sinonim of hating you?
bdw, my fave UM
I hate that game and what it stands for
@@Suwawako What does it even stand for
what are you wearing
2:51
you didnt credit the person who made that version of yuuka's theme 😡
I am not fan of the gameplay, read up the lore and went for mountain of faith instead (I am a new 2hu player)
Edit: but this game's soundtrack is just *chef's kiss*
I want to Like touhou 9 but its so confusing Not len'en 4 confusing but still confusing
You made this cause Touhou 19 comes out in a month, didn't you?
I hate this game just because it's not giving me an option to set default touhou vontrols and bushing this (spam to shoot) controls
What about Touhou 1?
Only once people fixed the collission detection to make dodging stuff not effectively random.(which probably won't be for a long time because people be like "But that would break replay-compatibility! 😨")
💀who the hell thinks early windows era games are underrated, its the only thing most of the fandom cares about
Not phantasmagoria
Most of the love for the classic era tends to come from the first three Windows games. Heck, some people even skip this game and move straight on to Mountain of Faith.
this video is a lot better than past ones, but your pronunciation of zun is still painful, like intentionally mispronouncing characters is one thing but someone's name? that's legitimately disrespectful. dude created the series that your entire channel is built around. the least you can do is pronounce his name correctly, right?
ZUN --> "ZOON" sounds like a shitty microsoft product
ZUN --> "ZUHN" that way I have always been pronouncing it
@@Suwawako that's cool and all, but it's still the way his name is pronounced. most people don't really like it when people intentionally pronounce their name wrong. and i know this may sound silly, but there's definitely a considerable amount of fans who learn things via RUclips videos like this, and because of that, a lot of content creators feel that they have a duty of care to avoid misinforming people, even if it's just a running joke.
Sorry but PoFV has my least favorite soundtrack of them all, I like the game decently well other than that though
good game .
(Actually best game GG)
I don't like it, because i have to tap the attack button.
Japanese eiki
The best Touhou game is… *Touhou!*
The video is unnecessarily long, PoFV is the best Touhou for a simple reason:
Eiki Shiki
PoD.D is better imo :V
Sorry, it’s my mission to never play the game :( I played every main title and many spin offs but I refuse to play this game
W tbh. PoFV is one of the few ZUN L's
@@notlol1Twinkle Star Sprite > PoFV >>>>>> what the bullcrap is Touhou 19 called UDoALG
@@ephraimium6755I 100% agree. PoDD should be between PoFV and TSS(wayyy better but much harder than PoFV). I am not at all hyped for UDoALG at all, but hey at least the music is cool so far I guess.
If you have someone to play with I'd say check it out of curiousity at least.
No que hablas, a mi me gusta, por eso no es underrated 🙂
Yuuka kazami that an easy 10/10 for me🌻🌻🌻
