    *Corrections:*
    - Apparently the "typical switch" mentioned at 2:04 is the pressure plate in the Great Tree. The one in the area where you lower a body of water to the room below.
    - The Charlieton dialogue at 16:20 isn't unused. It appears when a purchase leaves you with exactly 0 coins.
    - The dialogue at 19:15 is used when you get kicked out of Hooktail's Castle by the Dull Bones TWICE.
    It's a hint for players who are seriously lost on what to do with the Dull Bones, though the use of the word "here" is a little strange to me
    Either way, I guess that answers my question about who the dialogue is referring to.
    - All three of the door dialogues mentioned at 51:18 are accessible in game. It just takes a lot wiggling around, and sometimes breathing fire helps, too.
    There's no way the hitboxes were actually intended to be this small. It's like they tested it with Mario or something.
    - Flavio's "singing carreer" comment ( 52:33 ) is also used. It triggers after you mess up the Stache Brothers part, and are made to fight a wave of Embers.
    - Toadia's line at 55:27 can be triggered if you talk to her before accepting her Trouble... But only after Chapter 7, for some reason!
    - 55:30 This line also belongs to Toadia. I have no idea how I missed this one. It's literally right there. Oof.

    Having to recollect party members sounds cool as fuck but considering how much people dislike ttyd's backtracking already Im glad this remains as a cool concept and not an actual thing in the game

      I also wonder if theres any rooms where you could potentially softlock in too. Like maybe theres some spots where you can get into a room or something, but to get back to the entrance you'd need Yoshi or Koops.
      You'd have to just reset the game. It'd be especially bad if any areas like that have Save Blocks too.

    19:38 I can confirm that this is indeed Koops' dialogue during a demo. I specifically remember playing the demo at Target or something and choosing to start at Hooktail's Castle, and seeing this. Boggly Woods was also an option, and I *think* Rogueport (the very beginning) and Petal Meadows were the other options. Koops is the only one that gives this dialogue because that place is precisely where you spawn for the demo, and Koops is your initial partner by default. It's not condescension, it's a necessity to not get immediately stuck since you haven't necessarily seen the Plane Curse in Rogueport Sewers. I also remember that you only got a maximum of 20 minutes with the demo, so they told you how to get up there so that you didn't have to waste time searching for it and maximize your time trekking through the dungeon.
    53:13 There's actually a *very* good reason why Zip Toad won't give you an autograph here. That's not Zip Toad, that's Doopliss in disguise. His "Uh................................." is an indication that he's giving this a lot of thought. He realizes that if he were to give you an autograph, someone might notice that his handwriting doesn't match Zip Toad's, and thus he'd be found out in pretty short order. Only signing "for chicks" is probably the best excuse he could think of on the spot. I wish the female partners would call him out on this and force him to elaborate. Maybe he'd insult their appearance or something.

      Flurrie: "Listen I know how fans are and that the stage and the big screen are separates worlds. But you wouldn't mind helping a fellow thespian out now would you sugar? I'll make it worth your time."
      Zip T: "Well... I only sign for chicks not passed their prime ma'am."
      Flurrie: "Well, I never! Good day to you sir! Let's leave this fool Mario."
      Vivian: "Um... well... you wouldn't mind giving me one please?"
      Zip T: ".......... ...I only sign for chicks."
      Vivian: "Oh... ok... let's just go and forget about him Mario."
      Ms. Mowz: "Well now my dear, I don't think you know this but, I don't just pick any man. Nope not even diamonds in the rough are good enough for me. No, I select only the best of men that meet my impossibly high standards. So perhaps, mon cheri can spare me an autograph?"
      Zip T: "Well... I only sign for chicks that aren't total floozies miss."
      Ms. Mowz: "Hmph, consider yourself unlucky. Let's go Mario oh and for the record. That part of me mentioning how I only select the best men that meet my standards. That still holds true dear. Mmm hmm hmm hmm."

    Wow, a whole hour of voice acting. :)
    For real though, always loved how much dialogue works as a fail-safe in case you do somehow manage to speak to certain characters you were never meant to, but it's crazy to think how much more dialogue goes unused entirely.

      When I started this video, I really told myself I would read everything straight, without voice acting.
      But the dialogue is written with such clear character voices that it's hard not to mimic the affect. Flurrie in particular I just couldn't read in a plain voice.

    the badge fortune telling thing and the collecting party members again makes me wonder if they planned for you to have a post-game in the Paper Mario mushroom kingdom. Might be a fun mod for the more talented out there

      It would also explain the Warp Pipe in front of the Mario Bros. house and the second room is fully modeled. It was either cut for time or space.
      If it was in the game, then it would harken back to Pokémon Gold and Silver as it elevates it to true legendary status!

      Honestly, it could have been that Rougeport & the surrounding was going to be expanded more. It certainly shows that all of the locations in TTYD require transportation or a simple warp pipe to some degree. However, that also cuts down on physically making branching paths. For goodness sake, Poshely Heights disguised the whole desert/mesa/badlands theme in favor for a luxury train ride, only stopping at a dilapidated station. The treasure map seems to imply Rougeport is walled off.
      Why couldn't Pedal Meadows, Boggly Woods, Twilight Town, or even Fahr Outpost have a lead up?
      For instance, Chapter 7's lead up to a simple pipe, General White's backtracking, and then to the moon & X-Naut Fortress analogous to Dry Dry Desert.
      Not even that you had to dig deeper within Rougeport sewers to find a frosty entrance like in 64. It's kinda... boring. Perhaps it is for the best. People know where to go and what to expect; especially with the game being padded with eventual backtracking.
      The game was clearly focused on the Palace of Shadows, and even that feels strangely rushed into a final stretch down to the Shadow Queen. They built up the idea of Mario opening the door, but went with the idea that it was going to loose the seal & the Shadow Sirens were always 1-step ahead of you, using Grodus as a fool.

    The knocking on people’s door dialogue in the Bowser intermission in Twilight Town was actually used in the remake word for word.
    Also, the "Cola’s on me" line was used in the remake as well.

    The recollection of party members mentioning a "new adventure" almost seems to imply a more deep postgame with a specific objective, rather than random quests scattered about. I wonder if we'll see anything like that in the upcoming remake? There's a lot of potential for new content in that remake and based off of that one Purplish Toad added it's certainly possible to see some original content!
    oh my goodness you just reminded me that the person who communicates to you through a text form in this game goes by the name "x", that's so cursed nowadays...
    I think the MACHO (move) gimmick for Grubba would be fun as long as the text wasn't like, dialogue text. Like, have it show up when he's using the move similar to the word "Stylish!" when a playable character does a Stylish Command.
    Yeah, to that pinned comment, those dialogues at 51:18 were DEFINITELY familiar. Not quite all of them, but still

    Having to re-recruit your partners in the post-game is a really interesting idea. Though it probably wouldn't have helped the backtracking issue.
    The GLISPO/TRUSPO-related dialogue is great, it's a shame it's unused.

    Looking at The Cutting Room Floor, this e-mail is handled a little strangely across the different translations. First, "Brett and Burt" is a localization of a similar name confusion gag (in Japanese, it was "Kawade and Kawabe"), but the strange part comes in for the Spanish and Italian versions of this e-mail. In those, this message is instead presented as a personal message from "designer of 3D maps in this game" Kawade, with the line-by-line details being similar enough that they may've been also translated from the same Japanese text the English script localized, even though the Japanese script's version is _closer_ to the English script's in being a third-person description of a map designer!
    Admittedly, I'm trusting TCRF's translations here as I only know English, but it all seems a little weird. I wonder if there's an actual Kawade or Kawabe credited for level design in the credits.

    Fun story here. Paper Mario on the N64 actually has an unused Defend command hanging around in its game data, and aside for some mild animation glitching on Mario it works just like how it does in TTYD. So, presumably Defend got replaced with Do Nothing in the first game, and then for the sequel they replaced Do Nothing with Defend.

    Maybe this tied into an unused audience event. Looking at TCRF again there's a bit of untranslated text for battle stating "the Shy Guy pulled a prank!", and the internal label (btl_msg_escape_wall_close1) suggests it involved a wall blocking your escape route from the battle. Perhaps this could've displayed if you tried to escape in that very specific circumstance? Though why this was translated but not the other line is a mystery.

    The alternate partner lines for the end of the Pit of 100 Trials make me wonder if maybe there was originally going to be a different boss than Bonetail there - those lines don't sound like they're reacting to seeing a giant dragon skeleton. They sound like it's some guy that's mad at you. Maybe Jr Troopa, or more likely, some more original character that was replaced with a Gloomtail lookalike because of time constraints.

    I want a deluxe version that includes all of the unused dialogue, and makes changes accordingly to fit that dialogue, the glitzville news headlines were such a huge highlight and some characters being added to the locker rooms seems like such a simple change that doesn't change the story. of course, the riverside station would be completed. Another example would be that a new reason to go into the bar in rogueport should be added so you get a chance to see the different dialogue in each chapter. Thank you so much for sharing new information about one of my favorite video games of all time !!!

    The unused Pit of One Hundred Trials peddler NPC was likely never intended to be used.
    Given it's very basic design and lack of colour (unless that's a character object you yourself specifically chose to activate the dialogue, in which case ignore that observation), in addition to the very basic dialogue, it was likely a placeholder in an early dev build used by someone on the dev team to make sure everyone was on the same page about including a shop NPC in said area.
    Akin to the floating text in numerious first-person dev builds that have been discovered or released in recent years; such as FN@F and PP.
    A form of communication that doesn't require someone to go to each team member that is working on the same area and show\explain the current plan.

    One thing about that hammer text is that it's likely just default text.
    To elaborate: If a game doesn't know how to answer something it will crash, so as a programmer you're meant to avoid that whenever possible.
    Example: In OOT there's a part in the game that has you hit enemies in a certain order, if you hit it correctly then the game will tell you in a text box to progress on ahead, if you get it wrong then tge game will let the player know before restarting things, but what if you hit every single enemy at the exact same time? The game doesn't know how to calculate it all so the game just progresses and moves onto the textbox phase, but they didn't have any code that has a textbox for getting it incorrect but still progressing anyways, and it would've led to a crash if not for the fact that the code also says "if the game doesn't know what to say, use text_string_00" so it says something completely random that avoids a crash and still lets the player move on.
    Most of the time default text is just some form of crash avoidance, or if there's a higher chance a player might encounter it, it's worth putting in some flavor text, which is why the hammer one is in there.

    11:03 strikes me as something that would actually reference the Attack FX chest in Hooktail's Castle. It seems like a comedic setup to what the chest actually contains. I'm assuming it's got some information or context tying it to rogueport, though.

    This is so awesome, looking through the data to find all the text in the game is interesting, I would like to learn how to do that, there are some games I love like Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and Mario Tennis Power Tour that would be cool to look and maybe document as well.

      I feel like I really lucked out with TTYD being a Gamecube game. The Dolphin emulator makes looking inside the files very easy, with its file extraction tool.
      I think the GBA will probably give you more trouble, but I wish you luck!

    the "cant run away!" dialogue really seems to me like that would show when you try to run away but fail? i can't remember if there's dialogue in that case, but maybe that's where it was intended to go

    16:20 I could be wrong, but I think that dialogue for Charlieton happens if you buy an item with 0 coins left. I remember seeing it before, but my brain may be playing tricks on me.

    The dialogue from the doors in the Bowser intermission for Twilight Town isn't unused! I've actually seen it in my game. Though I remember at least one of the doors (I think the inn) was hard to trigger the dialogue.
    The dialogue from the Poshley Heights intermission is in the game too! It's when you talk to the green Toad. The "EEEK" is the first time you talk to her, and "Muh-Mommy" is if you talk to her again.

      Wow, you're right! All of the doors are accessible. It just takes a lot of fiddling around. I've found that breathing fire helps Bowser get into position for some reason.
      As for the Toadia one... Yikes. No idea how I missed that one. How embarrassing.

      Yeah! Weirdly enough, it's now the only way to advance, as far as I know. The original random Twilighter doesn't say his dialogue anymore.

    You can also hit the blue pipe switches early by using jump storage to get the ultra hammer early. Having it in the prologue using this glitch feels like hacking even tho it's just glitches. That's how crazy the ultra hammer in petal meadows is.

    Question unrelated to unused dialog. When an NPC says "don't run away from battle" before fighting you, how likely is anyone mistaking this statement as a "Can't flee from battle!"? I think I'd had thought that.

      I could see that, yeah. But after you see neither party can damage the other, I think most people realise pretty quickly that it's meant to be reverse psychology.
