It is interesting how heavily this whole thing is tied into the fantasy created by literature. To the point where double suicide stories were banned because people kept being inspired to do it. The Edo government was often censor happy but that one I kind of get. It's like if the scenario of Romeo and Juliet was a lot more similar to real life and didn't have those comedic contrivances that get them to commit suicide, so people in those situations thought it was the best way to show thier love if they couldn't be together.

Prostitutes were mostly children sold into slavery by families who couldn't afford them; swords were kept away from them so they couldn't kill themselves. The only way out was for someone to buy her freedom, and hopefully to become a mistress (as a "fallen women" she probably couldn't marry). It's depressing and grotesque, but fascinating to read their stories.

But the vilification of sex work by religious authorities, led to the creation of red light districts by the Tokugawa Shogunate in order to control sex workers.
