    I'm impressed. You can incorporate the design into a wood stove and use it cook food and generate power; then put it a tiny house and go off grid!! 😁❤👍👍👍👍

    Always loved how smoke was slightly combustible, but I never knew it had this kind of power! Great video!

    • @schrodingcheshirecat
      @schrodingcheshirecat 2 года назад

      the heat breaks the wood down, which combining with ambient moisture, forms hydrocarbon gas, along with smoke and soot that is left behind. he filters off the smoke to prevent clogging up the airline.

      Mostly it is carbon monoxide gas, colorless, odorless and highly TOXIC. Be careful. They used this
      "wood gas " in Europe during and after WW 2 because petro was in short supply.

    Very nice, enjoyed seeing a gasifier project. A few things I would say on how you can modify/improve.
    •Try adding peltier modules to the casing oven to drive a fan to allow for more heat.
    •upgrade the canister to a larger container for more gasification.
    •keep the water colder to allow for more dense gas and also in joint with the peltier module.
    •make sure the wood is more dry and broken in down
    But other than that great project.

    Just my 2 cents worth but, a small 4 stroke uses less wood gas and the cooling air from the 4 stroke could provide cooling air to your wood gas condenser. All in all, great results! Keep going, it is a great effort on your part. I realize you used what was at hand, something from nothing. I hope many people can contribute $ to your effort.

  • @istp1967

    That's really, very good😀👍👍👍 First jar of water acts both as a condenser to cool the gas and as flame arrester; because the flame is lit from the second jar -- Well done indeed 😀👍👍👍👍

    That's actually a really cool updraft gasifier. With a few modifications over by the carburetor, you could turn into a downdraft gasifier. That way you can keep feeding it fuel while the engine is running.

      Livingoffmyland is correct. This gasification setup is using a retort, heated by a rocket stove; and is not a different style of gasifier, such as downdraft, or Imbert style.

    A tidy setup like this should tour the country. Especially on earth day or at state fairs. The thing that helps most is seeing it be assembled with easily available parts. Even if a part is hard to find or imagine a substitute a presenter could hock that part to the audience to help him fund his tour. Assembled systems could be sold for more than the parts. Heck, assemble one show it works. Sell it. Assemble another. Repeat. Take orders when run out of parts.(I thought of using brake line instead of copper pipe. I went with threaded lamp conduit instead to get started. Will see if I can get mine to work too!)

      Kade it is more efficient. I know about conservation of energy, the thing is that blowing a fire causes more wood to burn in exchange for more energy released in the form of heat. It's the wood fire equivalent of installing a turbo in your car

      Woo-hoo added complexity.
      There are more efficient gasifier out there that basically burn the charcoal to produce all of the gas components, so the same wood turns into gas's then makes pyrolyzes the next layer.

I know the concept of the video is showing that you can use wood gas but it would be interesting to see if a diy steam turbine could be built just as easy and be able to measure the effectiveness of transferring the heat energy into electrical energy

    Cool video,
    The Germans were doing this more than 70 years ago. Due to the fossil fuel shortages during and after World War 2, people in Germany, and other European countries, converted many of their cars, trucks and other vehicles to run on wood gas. They also made production cars that were powered by wood gas, using a gasifier that was mounted in the front or back of the car, fed with ordinary firewood and had pipes to transfer the singe gases into the combustion chambers of the engine. I found out about this a few years back and was surprised it even existed. It is amazing to think they used external combustion, to produce a fuel that was immediately consumed by an internal combustion engine! It is a great solution in extreme times. Essentially, a car like that would almost never run out of fuel, as long as there some combustible biomass laying around!

    Heh, heh! Fun!~ I liked it!
    Now I'm imagining a really big gassifier with wood gas stored under pressure in a balloon.
    I suspect that the engine uneven operation was from inadequate gas supply.
    12 volt led and compact florescent lights are readily available, you could eliminate the inverter inefficiencies, although I suspect that making 120 VAC was part of the idea.
    Creative job making your lines and hoses work --- making the fittings function.
    All in all, I'd give that an A+ grade for a first effort! Can't wait to see wood gas generator 1.2, or perhap[s 2.o

      Carolyn is right; you're just plain mistaken. Brown's gas is something entirely different.

    Great setup... suggestion: alternate the tabs of your stove pipe, inside & out 😉

      Experimental Fun. What about a engine that run on tobacco

    • @ExperimentalFun
      @ExperimentalFun  7 лет назад +4

      I could put grass and tobacco in the gasifier and it should produce gas just like the wood did, i might try some other stuff in part 2, I could use cardboard or paper, maybe I even try putting plastic in there although that would release chemicals into the air, not so good but then again I could put a filter on the exhaust so it doesn't pollute the air :)

      make the engine to run on hydrogen

    Making charcoal with sawdust or wood chips is more difficult than with just sticks. Had you packed the paint can with just sticks, I think you would have had better success. Cool and simple visual for those seeing something like this for the first time.

    Where did you get that 24 Volt Electric Motor?

  • @edifyguy
    @edifyguy 6 лет назад +1

    Running a 2 stroke engine like that for a long period of time will ruin it because there's no lubrication. However, you can solve this with an oil injector like shops use to add oil to compressed air for their tools.
    Very cool idea.

    • @ExperimentalFun
      @ExperimentalFun  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks, yeah I have it set up so that it can suck in some 2 stroke oil through the intake, thats what the blue line is for, although I often run it with no oil just to show that its not using the oil as fuel.

      with modern materials, efficient LPG, butane and even diesel burners, electronic temp, pressure and torque controls I can see steam as being a very clean, powerful and viable option for everyday transport. I've toyed with the idea of a tri or quadbrid system where diesel is used for ice drive/ charge and steam drive/ charge system as a retrofit to an existing car but the platform needs to be completely unique and very different to a common car today. they just don't have the available space to mount anything without serious cutting and refab so a beach buggy version is my best start point so far. the doble brothers pretty much had it sussed just as steam faded out but modern tech and materials are far superior to what was available to them in that era.

    use fresh wood, wood you find on the ground that is already dried out is going to have a lot of the chemicals that make up wood gas already out of them. but this is a great proof of concept. FEMA has plans for a gasifier you can download online, some people here on youtube have built one and run a full sized 2500w generator off them.
