  • Wanna know more about this BENJOLIN instrument thing? Then watch this video demo! ... and subscribe: ruclips.net/user/subscription_c...
    Chaos, noise, drones and sweet music, all from one device!
    The Benjolin is an instrument designed by Rob Hordijk and built and modified by a lot of DIYers, as well as some synth manufacturers. I explain the Benjolin's basics with a Klangbau Köln Benjolin Eurorack module. Don't worry though, you will easily understand all other versions as well, after watching this video.
    The cool thing about the Benjolin is, that it has some amazing feedback loops built in, which can be used to modulate the sound to the Moon and back ... well, some people say "to Hell and back" ... you decide. There is also the famous Rungler circuit of Rob Hordijk, which generates random, looping or evolving CV sequences via a shift register design (similar to the Turing Machine Eurorack module).
    It's tons of fun!

    In 2022, still a well-structured and very clear, helpful explanation.

    Thankyou for this explanation, I played with the example at "this museum is (not) obsolete, yesterday, but (of course) it didn't make much sense. Now I have more of an Idea about what was happening as I adjusted the control.

    that pwm output is so crazy, it's like part fm part detune like a super modulated reese bass kind of thing... I'm sold. now to get all of the money ever for all the weird modules I want...

      Haha, yeah, there are some beautifully-weird modules out there for the Eurorack format.

      Yeah ... maybe I could have timed that better. But I wanted to get the Benjolin demo out of the way and that meant posting the Noise Rack video too :D the more the merrier!

    Really nice explanation of the Benjolin architecture!
    Rob Hordijk explained to me in person once how the Rungler circuit works, but I still don't really grasp what it exactly does :P

    I love the Benjolin! Since it's commercially available now I might take the modular plunge instead of trying to build everything myself!

    Here because of the Benjolin preset for the Grid in Bitwig Studio. I still don't understand fully how the Rungler is different from normal S&H (or rather, what does make the difference under the hood), but still a good explanation and great sound demo!

    • @tuesdaynightmachines
      @tuesdaynightmachines  3 года назад

      I haven't checked the Rungler circuits myself, but it's not a S&H. It's more like the Turing Machine, where you can also loop the CV sequence and you have control over the "evolution" of the sequence.
