Chaos, noise, drones and sweet music, all from one device!
The Benjolin is an instrument designed by Rob Hordijk and built and modified by a lot of DIYers, as well as some synth manufacturers. I explain the Benjolin's basics with a Klangbau Köln Benjolin Eurorack module. Don't worry though, you will easily understand all other versions as well, after watching this video.
The cool thing about the Benjolin is, that it has some amazing feedback loops built in, which can be used to modulate the sound to the Moon and back ... well, some people say "to Hell and back" ... you decide. There is also the famous Rungler circuit of Rob Hordijk, which generates random, looping or evolving CV sequences via a shift register design (similar to the Turing Machine Eurorack module).
It's tons of fun!

In 2022, still a well-structured and very clear, helpful explanation.
Thankyou for this explanation, I played with the example at "this museum is (not) obsolete, yesterday, but (of course) it didn't make much sense. Now I have more of an Idea about what was happening as I adjusted the control.
that pwm output is so crazy, it's like part fm part detune like a super modulated reese bass kind of thing... I'm sold. now to get all of the money ever for all the weird modules I want...
Haha, yeah, there are some beautifully-weird modules out there for the Eurorack format.
Great Video, thank you! and love the tones at the end of the video. :)
Ser cool! That thing is amazing sounding, thanks for the demo!
Yeah, it really is a complete instrument in one module :)
Great demo! Cool module too. I'll have to check them out.
Thanks :) The Benjolin is really fantastic!
Three videos in one day? Perfect way to finish the night.
Yeah ... maybe I could have timed that better. But I wanted to get the Benjolin demo out of the way and that meant posting the Noise Rack video too :D the more the merrier!
excellent video, very clear. Thanks!
I look forward to seeing this in a synth jam
Really nice explanation of the Benjolin architecture!
Rob Hordijk explained to me in person once how the Rungler circuit works, but I still don't really grasp what it exactly does :P
Have the Epoch version and I love it. Great video.
Thanks :)
I love the Benjolin! Since it's commercially available now I might take the modular plunge instead of trying to build everything myself!
Yeah, going modular is super fun! :)
Convinced this module is a good add to my set up: thanks for this vid \0/
Awesome! :) Enjoy!
@@tuesdaynightmachines ordered one - made by a Belgium modular friend and has one for sale. Happy I can add it soon \0/
Oh, that was quick! Sweet that you found one already :) Have fun with that crazy thing!
@@tuesdaynightmachines great video, are these not been made anymore ? if not was there many made ? thanks
Here because of the Benjolin preset for the Grid in Bitwig Studio. I still don't understand fully how the Rungler is different from normal S&H (or rather, what does make the difference under the hood), but still a good explanation and great sound demo!
I haven't checked the Rungler circuits myself, but it's not a S&H. It's more like the Turing Machine, where you can also loop the CV sequence and you have control over the "evolution" of the sequence.
You are very productive and full of knowledge ... I envy that ... :-P
Oh, I'm sure you'd have lots to tell people as well. Get that video camera rolling man! :)
Great!!! Now I need one :)
Oh yes, you do!
love this exact module and its faceplate
Yeah, it’s roomy and playable. Like an instrument inside the modular synth instrument.
Klasse Video !!
Fantastic! Is there a way to sync the looping cycles of the unit to a clock source somehow?
No, but you can use the Benjolin as your master clock via the P2 output.
***** thanks!
Nice. Have you seen Pete Edwards' (Casperelectronics) version?
Yes, although I haven't dug too deep into it.
Yay a machine that makes random noises but good noises at least to my ear
Yes, I also think that the sounds from the Benjolin are very nice, while still being crazy :D
Hello. Do you know where I could find an Eurorack benjolin PCB? It's seems to be impossible. "Rungle all night long" :D
+Manuel Rodríguez Fernández write Willi from Klangbau. Maybe he still has some in Stock.
The Tuesday Night Machines thanks.
SOUNDS SO CLEAN
Want want want ha ha ha
I have wifi back have missed your video : )
Awesome! Welcome back :) :) :)
***** it's great to be back:)
Saving for this product 100%
Wow sound factor10.....
Cool :)
where can i buy one :-)
jsomatics I think for Eurorack there is currently only the Epoch Modular Benjolin available at the usual retailers. Standalone Benjolins are available from Macumbista.
How much $ for this version of the Benjolin in your video?
I think it's around $400, but send Klangbau a message and ask them again for a definite price.
i want!
:)
Just got a euro Benji...wheeeeeeeeeee
Awesome :)
RIP Bob Hordijk.
Yes, what a loss :( His passing hit me quite hard. I‘ve always been a fan of his creations and I had e-mail contact with him just last year :(
I like to rungle all night long with my Macumbista Butterfly Benjolin
