    “Your southern accent could be a handicap” WTF 🤣
    As someone who works in theatre, has had to do a cockney accent on more than one occasion, and has a southern accent, there are actually a LOT of similarities in an American southern accent and a cockney accent. If anything, it would be EASIER for her to learn the accent. They were definitely psyching her out.

      Southern accents actually come from British/French accents! I thought that was so stupid when he said it would be a handicap. Some people just don’t have an ear for accents, and most people are simply not practiced. Idk why they expect these girls to bust out perfect accents that are foreign to them at the drop of a hat 🤦🏼‍♀️

    While they might not have signed up for this speech training, per se, this might be one of the very few times it actually is a skill they might need in the future instead of pure humilation for them. Take the girl with the southern way of speaking, for example. Brands in commercials might ask her to speak in a more generic american without it, or even use a certain other way/accent/dialect to talk for a few lines. That seems very common.
    In that context, the teacher saying her way of talking is a handicap isn't necessarily mean, in my opinion, but just a fact. She needs to not only learn a new accent, she needs to unlearn the one she already uses, instead of sounding more generic to start with.

    • @kellyriddell5014
      @kellyriddell5014 Год назад +7

      It actually is pretty useful for Southerners to be able to switch from their native accents to "standard American." My mom would correct my speech growing up to make sure I could pass for someone who wasn't from the South if I needed to because she knew there is sometimes discrimination against Southerners (people assume we are ignorant), and she didn't want me to lose out on any opportunities I wanted.

    • @angrynerdgirl
      @angrynerdgirl Год назад +6

      Yeah, my mom is southern and a former actress. A lot of her training was on achieving a neutral "Johnny Carson" accent (it was the 70s). What's wild is that she still uses these very rural southern colloquialisms with a fairly neutral American accent, so I didn't realize they were "weird" until my school friends asked me wtf I was saying when I repeated them.

    Boris!! Shame shame, He was there simply to make these women feel uncomfortable. That’s why they put them in such horrible clothing and made them toothless. He didn’t even attempt to try the accent. He wasn’t dressed in period attire. He clearly did not prepare at all even though he actually signed up for this hot mess of a challenge. Plus he had his lines on a piece of paper inside of the newspaper when the girls had to actually memorize their lines. Then when it came time to pick the model, He chose the one that he said was flirtatious to him. Casting couch much?? Where was the actual modeling? The show isn’t ANT”Actress”. Call me?? On what?? They didn’t have phones back then. Was this an episode of Quantum Leap? I didn’t like his attitude the whole time. Very smug and arrogant. All of the women did what they could with this ridiculous challenge. I wish that just once we could have seen an episode where all of the ladies banded together to give the judges the what for about the lame photo shoots, bad clothing choices, unprofessional photographer mishaps, horrible final best photo picks that they conveniently chose and their own personal character flaws and sense of entitlement that they ever so brilliantly display proudly.

    This was the episode where Tyra snapped on Tiffany at the end. I think Tyra and/or the producers knew about Tiffany's effort level during this episode (she says she doesn't care about the acting challenge) and I feel like the $10,000 diamond reward was an underhanded punishment toward her for not taking either the challenge, or the entire show itself seriously enough. I haven't rewatched this season in years and Wikipedia can only go so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tyra resented Tiffany's motivation for much longer than this one episode suggests.

      It's an elitist attitude. They likely wouldn't say this to someone like Dolly Parton or Reba McIntyre or a wealthy rancher. They turn their noses at *regular* people from rural places because they think we're not commercial and ignorant.
      Also there's a cross over with Southern accents and African American Vernacular English. So naturally this is a setup for Black women here.
      Tyra has done this to some degree with many contestants, especially Danielle in Cycle 6 but it's endearingly cute for Laura in Cycle 13/17 (I love Laura a ton, this is no hate towards her). Literally anything is used against contestants, both positively and negatively.
      It's funny because I'm from Alabama, grew up all the way through college, and I have such a strange accent to them. I lived in Bay Area California back and forth for many years up until 2020, apparently I'm just totally country.

    This may not be modelling, but a lot of these contestants have gone on to be successful actresses…the show was never about just taking a good photo…they want someone that can do photos, runway, commercials, acting etc etc…this was never America’s Next “photo model”…

      I can actually think of at least 10 former models that have won Oscars. Charlize Theron, Jennifer Connelly, Sophia Loren, Julia Roberts, Hallie Berry, to name just a few. They legit started their careers as models. Not Oscar winners but successful actresses like Cameron Diaz, James King. There are a too many to name. They were successful models before they started acting.

      @@Weadessewell Started as models, moved into acting. The point was these are beginning models, not actresses. When I say super models, I mean Elle McPherson, Naomi Campbell, Tyra, Cindy Crawford, etc.

      @@Skeezer66 your comment is disjointed. You were specific in your initial comment. “I forgot when those super models swept up he Oscar nominations LOL” My comment simply offered examples of how and why it’s not a stretch that successful models transitioned from modeling to movies. By the way Cindy Crawford tried to do it. Other models like Andie McDowell, Rebecca Romijn, Famke Janssen, Brooke Shields, James King were “super models”! It’s not at all unreasonable to test a models acting chops.

    I think the reason us British people have bad teeth is due to bad parenting and neglect. Although children can get free dental not all the time do Thier parents take them the dentist. Mine bought herself a toothbrush but none of Thier kids. When you become an adult it becomes harder to get free dental care as there is not enough places. So unless you have some dollar in your pocket your screwed. I've been quoted thousands for my repairs as I just cant afford it. It's horrible to smile and realise you have to stop because you realise how bad they are or you make excuses not to speak publicly or eat out can be so demeaning. I get that it is humourous for some but really if they knew how bad it was they wouldn't do it.

    I am convinced that at least part of the reason Tyra puts these girls and women through such ridiculousness is to make the lay person believe there's WAY MORE to modelling than there actually is, and therein also believe that Tyra must be extra exceptional and talented in all of these areas.
