I like this! I'm 67. I've done the gearhead thing. I've spent Winters tying flies. I've learned many patterns and the Latin names for the aquatic insects.
Now I'm ready for a more meditative approach. I like the simplicity. Doing more within a limited space--in the spirit of the Sonnet or Haiku!
I see it is still possible to be a gear head with this style, if you really want to--by buying many many rods 😂

I recently purchased a tenkara 13 foot fly rod. And used it it was freaking awesome!!! the fish literally jumped out of the water trying to get the fly!!!! You literally have control of how that fly presents itself!!! I would recommend the 13-foot dragon tail.

That's awesome! The presentation is pretty amazing and the Dragon Tail is pretty cool. The Tenkara USA Hane Fly Rod is great too. Really effective for fly fishing in open meadow areas where there isn't any canopy. The white color of the rod helps blend in with the open skies versus the other fly rods meant to blend in with the lush trees up above the water.

I have an old tenkara rod I bought in Matsumoto Japan 25 years ago. Generally I carry it on a fishing trip and use it on tight pocket water where casting a fly rod is difficult. I do most of my fishing with it differently that traditional tenkara. Rather than using level line I use a section of floating line to which I attach a leader. The weight allows me to roll cast if I need to. I’ll attach a strike indicator and nymph fish.

I also use a traditional fly line for the same reason.

Ok thank goodness someone is thinking ROLL CAST

I am wondering about roll casting. Probably not possible with the level line. Perhaps with the twisted line?
What about methods of reducing the back cast--using something like Spey casting, or the Belgium back cast?
    I'm fascinated!

it looks very effective is it like wet fly fishing(ish)?.
I think i actually love the casting part of fly fishing too much to change. Bouncing a fly off a tree trunk to make it plop in to the water next to the bank and other perfect casts are as good as actually catching fish to me.

We have heard both ways. We have found Tenkara to be very useful in tight situations were casting is tough. It is also fun fighting a fish on an 11+ foot rod and give you a lot of leverage.

I walked into the woods picked up a stick, tied fishing line to the end of it and walla, Tenkara rod. Free!!!!

Best euro nymphing tactic ever! An average euro nymphing fly rod cost $300, you can pick up a tenkara rod with the sensitivity of an sage fly rod that cost $600. A good tenkara rod for less than $150

How come no one talks about dynamic roll casting in Tenkara? How come no one has integrated Spey casting into their Tenkara yet? The reason why is that I just ordered my first Tenkara rod last week…so give me a minute but stay tuned
