- Here I explain the NEW HYBRID TUNING SYSTEM I used for the Steven Wilson Tour 2018/2019.... It basically allows me to play completely in 4ths whilst getting the open strings of standard tuning at the same time.... It's pretty wild. There is also a jam at the end as I always like to do with these videos... Hope you'll find it interesting. ;-)

I tuned down to DGCFA#D#, put a capo across the first fret, then cut a capo into a four string capo and put that across the lower four strings to get me back to to EADGBE. It worked well enough but it wouldn't return to tune after an aggressive bend. This specialized fretboard is a much better solution for a guitar that you plan on keeping in fourths permanently
That's interesting too mate. But as you say stablitlity could become an issue I guess, where as this NuVo guitar honestly is as solid as a rock... Very stable indeed... Thx for watching,
so simple! what a great idea to sort of flip the double bass extensions concept. Maybe you could even install the sort of twist capos, the way double basses do so you could clamp it at C/F .

Hah! I got this same idea! I don’t have access to a custom guitar so my solution was to use a mandolin capo on the 4 top strings and tune to Eb. But in the end I decided I actually like the new open chords that fourths allows.. the C, F and Bb
Another potential idea would be to put drop tuners on the two top strings so you can quickly switch between 4ths and standard.
Cool, yes mate lots of ways to do it... I also like the open chords in fourths. This did help me with the recent tour I did though playing some of the more standard music with open B and E... But tbh for my own music I defo prefer the open 4's chords. All the best and thx for watching. ;-)
That capo idea is great!
Quite. You can also easily find a partial capo which is specifically designed to fret only some of the strings. Gives you best of both worlds ... and also opens up other options. In my view this is cheaper and doesn't require a more invasive hack like this.
The only tuners which would work in this context would be the Bill Keith guitar ones. They're sold in pairs. Hipshots are too big to be placed beside each other. Only annoyance would be having two different looking tuners, as the Keith pegs are similar to banjo ones. And these would also be expensive. A pair of Keith pegs cost around 260 bucks.

This extended fretboard trick has been done for years, but usually on the lower strings. I'm more curious about the bridge and electronics myself.
Thx for watching mate, the bridge is from a company named Maverick. And the pick ups are Dimarzio, the neck was custom made by them especially for this guitar. I wanted it to be a humbucker but aesthetically look like a standard Tele neck pick up... Hope that helps.
Well, no, unless it’s something I’m unaware of. This is an extra negative fret. Are you thinking of multiscale (fan frets)? They do those so the low strings aren’t floppy.

I tune half down 4th tuning. And put capo on 3rd to 6th string of 1 fret. It’s easy wY to get hybrid tuning.

I have been playing for just over 10 years, and I have gone back and fourth between standard and 4ths... and have remained in standard due to the amount of repertoire i play that uses the open chords (I play both acoustic and electric)
Finally there is a perfect balance for my situation thanks to this video!! You may have potentially changed my whole musical future after this video ;)

…you can play open cords in P4 just as beautiful as standard...what you can't do is play standard arrangements note for note ( in many cases) without some modifications...and that is not rocket science...…..P4 removes the mystery from the keyboard and makes the process of learning much more simple....Important for those players wishing to advance into harmony and more challenging music....

What a great idea Alex, I've been playing in 4th's for a few years now, (your playing and those who use that tuning, being my inspiration to make the change), but the open chord issue still drives me mad. This is a simple way around that. (Something to occupy me this summer I think, as I do all my own work on my guitar.) The ending . . . . just stunning!

Interesting timing, i was listening to some Tom Quayle yesterday and that got me thinking of a similar idea whereby you'd tune in standard Eb and add cap on the lower 4 strings only

The Animals as Leaders boys have a similar set of extra frets behind the nut on their 8-string Strandbergs, but they have them on their two thickest strings. I believe they have a special capo system that will attach at the "nut fret" of those two strings, allowing them to be played as regular tuned guitars at will.

@@AlexHutchingsMusic I just watched the video back and they don't actually mention a special capo, but Tosin does reference "if I put a capo here". Not sure if they actually have one, or if that was just a thought experiment.

Yeah maybe one day. Re Instagram, to be honest I'm not really a huge fan of social media and the race to get lots of followers etc etc... Absolutely. It makes much theoretical and practical sense for me, and I'm in the position of slowly starting my way through Jodi Fisher's jazz book while having been improvising by feel for quite a long time. So even though it's just little by little for me at the mo, it saves time and effort with all the simplification of course. :) The improv has suffered a bit, but that's to be expected and it's quickly getting up to speed with my previous ability levels I think..Thanks for the (providential) video to make the change. ;)

Hey Alex,
I ran into tuning dilemmas growing up, until I grabbed the Roland stuff … I know you’re very familiar with the Roland VG-99…
I’ve seen your great product demos 😊👍
I also grabbed the Antares ATG-1 and Peavy AT-200 to allowed me to experiment with alternate tunings …. or to be able to play along with various cover tunes I liked without going crazy winding around tuners all day……..
Unfortunately, they always discontinue these items ….. The Antares is great because it also helps get a really great intonation of the guitar throughout the entire fretboard. I also like the Antares ATG-1 for being able to plug into any gear I like, and still have those great tuning intonation options.
* Why not use something like that to switch between your 4ths or Standard tunings at a touch of a button. I’ve seen you do a expression pedal / pedal steel type change of tuning with VG-99 …… Instead set it to go between Standard tuning or 4ths? 😊

Oddly, just yesterday, i thought a similar idea. Place a little key with a cam shaped profile that laus under the e and b. Turn it slightly so the iensio n on these strings is increaed to make then c and f. Suddenly you are in fourths...to solo or go back for chords.
That's a pretty cool idea. would love to see that working.. ;-)

This is great - thanks for sharing. I wondered what this did ever since I saw a picture of it in Guitarist magazine. I have a Sauria S6 on order with Tom and am seriously considering having it done as I am struggling to see the downsides (I’m not switching back to standard - May the 4ths be with you!)
Oh wow that's amazing... Well as you well know Tom is the man, so might be worth at least asking to see what he says.... but my 2 cents are it's great and you could always capo the 1st' fret which also gives you the full 4th's tuning.... That is something I've only dabbled in myself but worked pretty well. Also I guess you'll have a few other guitars in your collection so those could be tuned standard and then you'd have one of the very few Hybrid tuned guitars... But of course it needs your careful consideration. I'm impressed you're set on sticking in Fourths. Good on you. All the very best mate. ;-)

I remember seeing one of Tosin Abasin kinda weird experimental guitar, he had kind off the same conversion thingy but on the lower strings ( and it was movable) so he could go from standart to drop tuning in an instant. Still a really good trick that actually work for you and your 4th tuning!

I tune in fourths this way Eb-Ab-Db-Gg-B-E when a piece has lots of high B and E notes. Works well for classical.

Fantastic idea, did you think of this? I haven't had a gig that required lots of tunings in awhile, but when I did, the Roland VG-99 sure did make it easy to cheat!!!
Thanks Eric yeah Kind of.... its a variation on what I've seen people do before which is to capo the first fret... but I like this idea better because the fret marker are in the right place.... Thx for watching👍

Very cool invention! Do you find that the action of the two highest open strings is noticeably higher? They now have to clear the c and f, instead of those notes being the zero fret, but I imagine it’s such a small height difference at the end of the instrument that it’s not noticeable
Thx Nick, no not at all actually. I love having a low action, and Tom makes absolutely sure the necks on these guitars are so so solid that you could run a train over them.. ;-) So in other words they are the perfect angle for a low action across the entire fret board including the zero fret... Honestly if you could feel it right now I think you'd be shocked how great it feels. Thx for stopping by.. ;-)

So Alex, did you have to cut away your usual nut or did the extension go over it? Im tuned to 4ths because of you and Mr Quayle and I just love it.
Hey man, Cool that you play in 4ths and glad you're enjoying it. This guitar was a complete custom design so no need to cut the nut, but the conversions to the other guitars I believe were cut yes, although knowing Tom perhaps he just made new ones... ;-) I couldn't be 100% sure. I can say that the 'extension' part is definitely a different material and so custom designed. ;-)
