  • Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, discusses the different roles of the three contact areas under the foot. According to him, in Karate the majority of the body weight should always be supported by the heel, while the forefoot should only act as support. When standing, the practitioner should be focused on the posterior side of his body rather that on the anterior, thus enabling the shoulders to be relaxed and achieving a better balance. When stepping forward, the first part of the foot touching the ground should always be the heel, while the forefoot should act only as support: this can result in faster body transitions and rotations, as well as more kime in upper body techniques.

You are right, there are three contact areas, but the focus of this class was only on two of them: forefoot and heel.
