Taking a deeper look at a book by Mark Levine titled The Jazz Theory Book. Great book but requires prior musical knowledge and patience especially if you are a guitarist.

I'm a guitar player. Started some jazz classes 3 weeks ago, and bought this book as a complement. 😊

As a classical musician, this book is really helping me to slowly understand the basics of jazz. And your review too.

How are you reading through it. So much of the first chapter just makes me glaze over

Not for beginners. I'm working through it and I went to music school. I played classical and Jazz.
Minor7thb5 makes that clear. You must be good at JAZZ theory before you even begin this book.

I liked your review. I too go back to this book a lot. You can get so much out of just reading a couple pages of it at a time.

What I appreciate about Levine's books is that he uses the tunes to show you how these concepts work .

I love that book since Jazz influences me and so I'm thrilled you review it. As a guitarist for book trailers about comics who composes and performs original guitar themes that are influenced by my Jazz studies and Classical training, I love your review since you wonderfully note that it's important to learn theory in order to go beyond it. Wise true words!
I'd personally add, theory and Jazz theory allows one to quickly compose & perform original music that is pleasing to most listeners instead of having to take too much time thinking how to make unheard music. Wonderful notes such beautiful playing at the beginning!

Love your honest excitement talking about this stuff. I do agree what you said at @10:35 was also a moment of revelation for me!

Thanks for that video! I do also try to really get the theory now, after having played guitar for 25 years without really knowing what I am actually playing. Hope your video will motivate other guitar players for getting more into theory, as if you want to understand / play jazz, I guess there's no alternative. And as you say: suddenly a lot of (musical) doors will open to you !

Great Review...just bought the book...in terms of theory it's a 2nd if the note is passing or a neighbour tone ect.. and is resolved by the 3 or the 1. It's a 9 if it isn't resolved and basically becomes part of the stable chord tone.....hope this helped

    9 is 2 because 9 divided by 7 leaves remainder 2, 11 is 4 as 11 divided by 7 leaves remainder 4, etc...

Minor pentatonic is DEF a crutch for guitarists. One of my guitar teachers at Berklee used to yell at me when I drifted away from the scales and patterns I was learning and went on minor pentatonic auto-pilot! 😂
