  • 'The Jazz Theory Book' and 'The Jazz Piano Book' are two books that pack an incredible amount of useful information. Everything is clearly described and beautifully presented. These books are not a simple glossing over, but are in depth looks at a truckload of necessary topics that will aid one in becoming a better musician. Some topics included are basic theory, scale theory, slash chords, turning scales into music, playing outside, pentatonic scales, blues, rhythm changes, reharmonization, song forms, memorizing tunes, salsa and Latin jazz, fourth chords, block chords, upper structures, stride and Bud Powell voicings, tri-tone subs, and more.
    Two great books!

The thing I struggle the most with is understanding the complexities and subtle aspects pertaining to women. Kidding!! What I find hard is getting the timing right when reading sheet music. Especially things like when a track has a short intro bar and it starts with rests. And long notes covering multiple bars like Hancock Maiden voyage. Hard to come back in at the right point. Basic rhythm reading - fine. 6/8 is fiddly. Even in 4/4, it’s when there are rests and 1/8 or 16ths, I get lost.

Do you need a background in classical music before starting in jazz? or can you jump in as a complete beginner?

bbb GgG The genre doesn’t matter as long as you have an intermediates level of theory in general.
