When I was 5 (1964) my dad bought a brand new Jeep Wagoneer. It was the first full production year after the Willys Utility Wagon. I fel in love with Jeeps then and there. In the '70's, I discovered the older Utility Wagons and that was love at first sight. I was smitten. By '86, I was already divorced so treated myself to a 1960 Willys Wagon. We were a pretty hot item together in SoCal and went everywhere together. Even when I moved to Utah. She was stolen in '99. I found a '59 in Colorado for sale and have plans for pwr steering and other things. I'm an old guy now, but only feel at home in a Willys. In all these years, I've NEVER seen two alike. People always, always, build them to their own specifications. They are very special, personal and unique transporters with a face only a mama (or papa!) could love! In their day, they certainly weren't the most valued, or expensive wagons on the market. But they have increasingly become more valuable with time. Your Willys was treated like an old friend and given a chance of an upgrade many of us can only day dream about. Thank you so much for sharing that dream fulfilled so we can see some of the possibilities available out there. It is just more validation of the old saying that, REAL Jeeps are built - not bought! God bless in a project that is always on-going!

You are so right! Your Amazing experiences growing up are a huge part of what define your relationship with old Willy’s wagons.
We feel the same way. When we ride around in “Ol’ Ed” with our 8yr old and our 14yr old the driving experience melts together with what ever that moments adventure is and bond those things together into our memories.
It’s these memories that cumulatively grow our love for our wills wagon.
As you said, no two are alike, they have a personality. Unique vehicles you can develop a relationship with.
Jeremy Clarkson explained our relationships with vehicles well in this short RUclips video:

Awesome wagon. I’ve got a 53 bone stock. The engine is the F head 134 hurricane 74 horsepower but pretty decent torque. I do need to correct you on top speed though. Definitely not 40 mpg. It’ll cruise at 60 mph no problem. I have a warn overdrive in mine, and with no grade it can cruise at 70 mph. Stock jeeps of this era are way more capable than people think.

Great build, thanks for the walk through. I currently have a 62 Willys wagon with a 351w but it's tied and brakes are terrible. I'm considering getting a 05 Rubicon LJ. Does the frame need to be stretched at all to fit the Wagon? Wheelbase appears to be an inch off. You mentioned 1/2 inch in the video. I'm from MN but moved to St George UT and the wagon came along for the ride.

Great build with much thought put into the parts selection. Any thought to padding the bars especially in the back. In a roll over or side impact anyone in the back seat might be able to strike the exposed bars as the back seat seems not to have any shoulder straps unless it has a 4 point accessory harness. I really had to look for anything to comment on. I would “steal” everyone one of your ideas as I think your have reached perfection. Good for you.

One other thing.. you talk about reliability, you can’t get much more reliable than a simple carburetor and points distributor. You can very easily fix them right on the trail. No sensors to fail, no electronics to fail, just pure simplicity and serviceability. Parts are still very readily available for cj5 and wagons. The more complex you make it, the harder it will be to find the problem and fix it. Just something to think about. Modern does not always mean better.

Willys (pronounced / ˈwɪlɪs /, "Willis") was a brand name used by Willys-Overland Motors, an American automobile company, founded by John North Willys.
Founded: 31 May 1908. So NO, they don't "need to get rid of the “y” in Willys."
