  • If you want to start sketching using a fountain pen, you are going to need to understand all about fountain pen ink. It's different from drawing ink and if you put the wrong one in your pen, you might clog it up and even ruin it for ever. Most urban sketchers are looking for a black fountain pen ink, so in this short film we will look at the three types you might consider. Understanding your materials means that you can predict what they will do and there won't be any horrible surprises further down the road.
First there is standard fountain pen ink - Quink ink, something like that. Then we look at waterproof fountain pen inks such as Platinum Carbon ink and finally we consider registrar's or document ink. I'll do a quick drawing with each so you can see what's going on.
I'm using a Dollar 717i piston fountain pen here and sketching on a Moleskine sketchbook. You might like to see a sketch done entirely in Kohinoor document ink here: • Speed sketching with a... or a review of the TWSBI Eco Piston pen here: • TWSBI Eco fountain pen...
If you look on my channel there are lots of urban sketching films too, alongside watercolour tips and ideas.
If you like line and wash you might be interested in my book called 'Line and Wash Painting', which was published in January 2022 by The Crowood Press (www.crowood.com) and if you want more in depth training please check out my line and wash course over at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk. I am so glad I watched this before trying ink and watercolor. It had not occurred to me that one should use waterproof ink!

Registrars ink was my preference when I was looking for a waterproof black ink before I'd every tried any of them. But it wasn't easily available at the time I wanted to purchase it, so I went with my second option of Platinum Carbon Black. Over time, I'm glad I didn't end up getting the Registrars because I needed a quick dry waterproof ink. And every comparison of waterproof fountain pen black inks makes me happier and happier with this happy circumstance of fate that prevented me buying the Registrar's ink.

yes! It was a notable difference and I was impressed with tge Carbon Black, but registrars is also fun to use the fact it does not dry quickly to your advantage. if you apply water you can get it to run and achieve line and tone from the ink.

My personal preference is for Noodler’s Lexington Gray which dries immediately and is waterproof. It’s like a dark charcoal colour rather than an intense black. I mostly use a Hong Dian Forest fountain pen with a Fude nib so I can get varying line widths depending on the angle I hold it. I got the inspiration for this from one of your previous videos so thank you for that Liz.

I have Lamy Safari and Alstar pens, both with EF nibs. I tried the Quink and the Carbon ink with them. With the Quink a can draw very thin line, but with the carbon ink I am not able to do the same.
Does the carbon ink flow better?

Thanks for this, a great demonstration. I have been trying to research permanent blacks for my fountain pens because I didn't want to ruin them and there seem to be as many opinions as there are inks. I was surprised that you used the platinum carbon in your fountain pen as I thought that was a gum-it-up ink but I shall now give it a go. Do you have to wash it out if it's not used for a while? It's a little inconvenient to use a dip pen and bottle of ink when out and about and I've had no end of leaks, spills and splatters but I do like the quality of india ink lines!

Sitting in the doctors waiting room, or an office, it´s really boring.
    So boring.
So I´ll take my scetchbook, the fointain pen and the waterbrush and begin to draw.
But I dont´t use waterproof inks but that common ink for scool.
And I LIKE to delute and blur the lines because that will produce shadows and deep.
There are a lot of colors, my preference is a dark brown, when not deluted similar to caput mortuum.
But when blured and deluted in the scetch it becames a wonderful warm reddish brown, like rust.
Like RUST ???? Yes, like fresh rust, and I like that color for scetching.
Now, my pieces of art are no real art.
But it doesn´t matter as long as it stays fun.
Best greetings from the continent. 🙂

Are you sure you haven't mixed up the Document ink and the Carbon black? Document ink with a modern formulation of iron gall should cast a brown wash and the 'carbon' should be black/ grey. Could you reload pens keep them separate and re-evaluate?

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Год назад +1

hiya, they are correct, I promise. The Kohinoor document ink has a green cast - this is how it is described on the fountain pen network: ‘The colour is dark grey-black or black-grey with distinctive greenish hue, depending on paper and pen combo. It darkens over period of several minutes to several months into flat black with greenish hue.The more it darkens, the more it is resistant to any kind of wash-out.‘ What they say is that it is not a true iron gall, so I have that wrong. I though all document inks by definition were gall based.
