Thank you Sam. Here's a few interesting statistics. Oysters actually serve to clean the water through filtering. An oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day. At one time, the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay could filter the entire bay in a single week. Today, a much smaller population needs about a year to filter an amount equivalent to all of Chesapeake Bay.
This was great, my 95 year old mom is from Maine and absolutely loves seafood especially lobsters, oysters, and scallops!!! We both enjoyed this video♡

Very interesting. In France, we just tip the oyster like a spoon and let the oyster and it's liquid slip out into the mouth. A squirt of lemon is a nice touch sometimes.

Thanks again, Sam! Great questions! I've been following you for a week or so and had to comment on your oystering segment. My brother-in-law was Jack Radel who owned the Radel Oyster Co. They had beds (and docks) in Bridgeport, Norwalk, Oyster Bay, New Haven, and Northport. They probably ran 25-30 boats in the oystering hay day from the 30's to the 50's. By the time I worked as a deckhand during high school and college summers in the late 60's and early 70's they were down to 6 boats. They did it the old fashioned way dredging up oysters directly from the leased beds in Long Island Sound.

great vid sam, ive lived in new england my entire life, including maine - and its pretty refreshing to see something about commercial fishing that isnt just about lobster or groundfish! cool to see you enjoying your time in maine so much as well.
for about ten years ive had an allergy to shrimp, clams and oysters. it has gone away very recently with no effects after eating, so watching you guys eating fresh oysters was making me hungry. so glad im able to join in the fun again though!!

Nice, I enjoy sampling Oysters from the East and West coasts. Oysters are like apples, they taste different based on locations. Theres variety out in the seas! Most memorable oyster I’ve had was from California and I kid you not it had a subtle watermelon after taste. Ordered a plate of them at Eddie V’s.

I remember in the book The Black Pearl the oysters being quite large and the bigger they were the better chance they had of holding a nice fat pearl.

I live south of St Louis and want to know how many days from planting until harvest and can they be planted with tomatoes and basil?
Between 2-3 years for oysters here in Maine. Operations further south can turn them out in 18 months!

So every time they pull their traps, do they sort through them and toss out the undesireables? When he opened that trap of younglings and said it was not a good batch, did he toss them, or sort out the good ones to keep and toss the bad ones. Great video, I think lobsterman uses his product. They also use oysters grown in ponds.
The bad batch was some seed oysters that were neglected by me. The loss there was my fault, too busy! Shame, because that was probably around $3000 worth of oysters...
I toss away very few oysters. Only badly misshapen ones and oysters that grow together and can't be separated.
