I had Peavey Triple XXX which is exactly same as 3120. Now I have JSX and 6505 so I can tell everything what I know. 3120 is "under" the ultra series (rockmaster preamp →ultra→ultra plus→XXX/3120→JSX/ XXX II). They all have three type of sound (clean, crunch and high gain) except the 3120. The XXX/3120 has clean, high gain and high gain 2 mainly for solos. This means that XXX/3120's crunch/rhythm channel is almost same as ultra channel on other ultra series amps. I compared JSX's Ultra channel with XXX's Crunch channel and it was almost identical. This channel is very very tight and I love it. Ultra channel on the XXX/3120 is more loose what is better for solos. 6505 is not tight as XXX/3120 crunch/rhythm channel but maybe it can be close to the XXX/3120's ultra channel. I never tried it because I want just tight sound. Another difference between 6505 and XXX/3120 is that fizzy highs on 6505 do a presence knob and on XXX/3120 do a edge/treble knob because of active EQ. I also did some comparison between 6505 and JSX. You can find on my profile. I recommend the last one :D Btw. Even when you did tone matching, 3120 has more mids and less highs. I think that it can be more close. Then you will hear a total difference between gain structure.
@@mikefrombloodofthewolf7076 XXL is solid state but it sounds like tube. I also had it :D It has not a headroom as XXX. The reason was maybe 100w vs. 120w. Triple xxx 2 is the jsx in new costume. Same as triple xxx and 3120.
Interesting that in the mix the 3120 sounds mellower, and solo it sounds fizzier. There is a really distinct difference between the gain structure to be sure!
sheesh Im like .............that sounds killer, I say that on each amp cuz they both sound awesome. If I had to pick .... 3120 for me, because its kinda the underdog
Just a thought, those two amps would prolly sit really well in a mix with each other. They sound like they'd compliment each other well, either by blending or running them left and right
Swap out the EL34s for JJ KT77 or Tung Sol 6L6GC-STR in the 3120 and the cleans will improve. Also installing JJ 5751 valves in V1 and V2 gives you more range on the rhythm channel gain knob and also helps with cleans. The 3120 is just a really hot amp. And as someone else has said it is the Triple XXX with EL34s and a facelift.
I don't know man, I thought the rhythm and lead channel sounded pretty awesome the way it was. The clean channel could have used some more tweaking. I'm sure I could have gotten a better sound out of it.
Yes, there is a version with black knobs and a brownish/gold logo and trim. This one actually had white knobs that I couldn't live with, it just made the front look cheesy. Good observation!
Great vid dude... As far as my studies has taken me yeah the 3120 is the "newer" xXx but the EL34s insted of the xXx's 6L6's I own a xXx but i had mine modded to run on EL34's so does that meen in a way i own a 3120? Philosofi. xD
I don't know about the FX loop. I never use them. To the second question, no, it is not noisy. For what it's worth, the 3120 is my favorite amp at the moment.
That would be pointless. Dial both amps in to sound good, no one is gonna play these amps with everything at noon. Some amps sound good on their own but get lost in the mix, so a full mix review is better IMO

Great info. Thanks for commenting. Question, I thought the XXX II was solid state. Am I wrong? Is it tube?

yo, I've never seen a demo this well done for the 3120. shit, almost forgot about them! cheers dude!
Thank you very much!
I run a BBE sonic maximizer through the fx loop of my peavey Triple X. The difference it makes is astounding. Like pulling a wet blanket off the amp.
Yeah, I've tried running it that way too. I kinda like it better at the end of my pedal board.
so it gives you more presense?? Ive heard of the BBE but not enough to research it yet.
Ah yes someone else that knows the secret of the BBE Sonic stomp with a Peavey amp. I use mine with my ultra plus 120
Sonic stomps are very underrated. I have a cheap crate gtx (til I can find a cheap peavey tube or bugera) and it makes it sound great.
Really awesome video. Great playing, love those riffs!
Thanks!

Great comparison, actually prefer the 3120. Awesome riffs too
Thank you!

Love my 3120, clean boost it with a EQ and that's my tone lol. Really need to roll back on the gain when you start pumping it. Awesome review boss.
Thanks man. I could have done better with the clean channel. I didn't do it justice.
@@mikefrombloodofthewolf7076 nah screw that man, great review. Who uses the clean channel without some sort of effects anyways lol
@@evalroach666 I suppose that's true. Thanks man!
3120 wins, it has higher mids, tighter bass, and cut through better with clarity.
Totally agree. Actually sold that 6505. Kept the 3120!
Seems very blackened death appropriate, ala The Unanimated or Dissection. Very well done.
Thanks! Appreciate the compliment!
I also hear some Vinterland. And Dissection indeed. Swedish blackened death
@@JasperPost46 thank you! Those are high compliments!
Sick riffs man
Thanks!
Amazing amp bro. Love peavey amps. Have a wonderful day.
Me too. I like most Peavey amps I've played with. I think they're underrated.

That's a good idea!
Was thinking the same...

I have KT77s in my XXX. I bought it with it already installed. Sounds great
I never saw a White logo/trim on the 3120 always brownish

This is fucking awesome !

Peavey amps are the best!
They are great amps, totally affordable and sound awesome. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks. I think it does!
Yeah. They're basically the same anyways, except for the design of course.
Dude this riff very cradle of filth like and fan of both amps good tones on both
Thanks!
What knobs are on your 3120? Are they direct replacement/push on?
They are the original knobs. I spray painted them black and used a paint pen to do the lines.
How is the FX loop in this amp? Is the amp in general noisy?
I don't know about the FX loop. I never use them. To the second question, no, it is not noisy. For what it's worth, the 3120 is my favorite amp at the moment.
Should have just started at noon for both amp no overdrives, pedals or entire bands on the recording.

the difference is Small. ... astonishingly small.
6505 so much better! IMHO

Need to redo your time stamps. Clicking on them puts em at the end of the sections.
@@tobins6800 thanks, I'll take a look at them.
