After having 2 cameras, 1 suitcase, snorkel gear, jewellry stolen during a lifetime of travel, the only thing I have learned was no matter how safe you try to be, there is always somebody out there watching you like prey & waiting for an opportunity. Never travel with valuables, carry your passport & papers/credit cards/cash on your person at all times, & never let the bad guys out there rob you of your love of travel & sense of wonder. Its the good travel memories that last a lifetime which are priceless.
Beautiful words Sandra, and so very very true. The love of travel and sense of wonder is still in tact thankfully, and the memories will last a lifetime ❤️❤️ we can try improve our security, but like you said, if they want in enough they will get in lol. Just gotta make it as hard as possible ahha
so how do you go swimming in nature? you have to bring someone with you to watch your stuff? how about someone does something to CATCH and JAIL these criminals? why isn’t this already the standard protocol ?? smh
how about everyone just stop spending their money in Spain? if they ever notice that they’re being boycotted, maybe they’ll do something. or, maybe the reason they don’t do anything about it is because the police are ‘in on it’, i.e. corrupt. this happens all over the United States, for example.
@@vibecat4899 i am an old woman & my snorkeling days are over. Lol. But i still travel with a cloth hobo shoulder bag draped across my body so nobody can grab it off me. I have a hidden (under my shirt) small zippered cloth case strapped to me carrying passport, travel papers/important phone #s & credit card/currency that I have been known to sleep with on or under my pillow at hotels/hostels. Plus at all times I keep an extra credit card & $100 in 20's inside my bra on the side. (In a pinch, lots of people/places accept American cash 24/7 if no ATMs around.) And I don't wear expensive watches/jewelry, designer label clothing/shoes or show my phone often on the streets when i travel. I pack light & carry nothing that I will cry over if its gone. I have solo traveled all over for almost 4 decades & theft is universal, happens at expensive places in broad daylight & inside religious cathedrals as much as at dark hole in the walls or camping in tents, not exclusive to travel but seems to go with the territory. Like bed bugs, undrinkable tap water, overcharging, and cancellations/delays. But the benefits of travel outweigh the risks more often than not. Just be prepared for the worst case scenario, dont ever risk your life over possessions, and always remember tomorrow is another day.

So sorry this happened to you guys! I have constant van-anxiety about being broken into, but I have to remind myself, we live in a van so we can see the world, and sometimes bad things happen and the few ruin it for the many, but they cant steal your spirit or your experiences, so that's what counts! Great video and good to see you still out enjoying the climbing

All I can add to that is whilst we live in London in the van. We witnessed attempted break ins to vehicles almost every week without fail. The longest we went without witnessing someone trying to break in was 23 days, then our van was graffitid lmao. Vehicle crime is rampant. To the point where police in London don't even come out they just tell you to log it online to get a number for insurance. We knew numerous people who lived in homes who had cars broken into, but noone who had their home broken into. I reckon vehicles are easier to get away with. But you are right homes get robbed too, it would be a very interesting statistic to compare them, I'm only going off my personal experience and in a city, so can't be scaled up to everywhere obviously. In different area it might be more homes, whatever is the easier target I suppose.
@@urbannomadslife The difference at least here in the USA is that the robber never knows if they will be met with a homeowner holding a gun. The robber can pretty much tell when a van or car is vacant. They break the window and if no one yells at them, it's a free for all. So vehicle crimes are much higher than home invasions.
Aww flip, I'm sorry to hear that, it's just the worst feeling isn't it. Even though the Spanish police couldn't really do much to get our stuff back they were so so kind and sympathetic and did a whole report for us. Sounds much better than the police in Rome!!! Same outcome ultimately, but at least made us feel like something was happening lol. Did you upgrade your security after it? We are going to install a safe and some antismash film on our windows too.
I mean this in a supportive way: this video gave me such a sick feeling in my stomach. Absolutely. Friggin'. Gutted. The speed you two bounced back from this back into a positive brain space is beyond commendable. Glad you have security cameras now, but also sad they are necessary. This shouldn't happen to anyone, let alone good people like you who put so much good energy and positive vibes out into the world. I truely feel for you. I once had my house broken into while i was away. And it turned out multiple ppl some who i even knew came in and helped tbemselves. It is truely one of the most violating things that could happen to someone. I've lost much of my trust in humanity. I hope you're able to recover. 🙏financially and emotionally.

We were expecting lots of people victim blaming and being mean after sharing this, but the world is full of compassionate, kind, empathetic and generous humans. Your van break-in is the second video I have seen happening in the same country...Spain. The police do nothing. My heart breaks with yours. We've already bought a new safe and camera, but worth looking into them, thinking about getting an alarm fitted as ours doesn't appear to do anything 😂😂

I know this was a year ago, but this saddens me on all levels. Your home, as you said, is violated. To see your resilience in this horrible situation is impressive and inspiring. You were so happy when the glass was replaced, and the glass vacuumed up. So, glad that both of you are safe and hope the insurance replaces your camera. To see you reaching out to the person who vandalized your van. Maybe it will make them feel guilty. One could only hope.

What a shit experience - feel so sorry for you both. It's so horrible to have your van smashed and stuff stolen. We were away from home just before one Christmas and our house was burgled. All the children's wrapped presents were stolen, Cathy's engagement ring was taken too. It was a horrible time. But later we came to realise it's only stuff, we were insured and we weren't hurt. But it still felt horrible. So hope you're OK and look forward to following your future adventures. Stay safe and happy. 😊

Yeah definitely recommend taking it seriously. We always thought some people went overboard.... Now we are going to be overboard 😂😂😂 you can get antismash film for your windows, so that's a good shout to add to slow down any smash and grab situations. We will be installing it ourselves as we are cheap, to get done professionally it's like £300. To be fair the professional stuff is meant to be bomb proof, but I reckon smash proof is probably enough lol.
@@phillyandkeely I’ve got the same type of van and recommend fitting external deadlocks above the protective film (or both if you can afford it). Makes it much harder to get in. All the best and hope you can put this shit behind you.

I came home from work one day and noticed my front door wasn't closed all the way. I noted it, thought it was odd, and entered my house as normal. It took me several minutes to comprehend what I was looking at once I entered in and closed the door behind me. Allllllll my stuff had been gone through and thrown all over. We had been robbed in broad daylight and they took all my expensive electronics, tools, jewelry, and even rummaged through my (at the time) 2 year old daughters room and belongings. The fear set in, the feelings of violation set in, and the knowing that some stranger had been in my home, took what they wanted, and touched my private things with their flighty hands made me absolutely sick to my stomach....for years. In fact, it still does. I'm shopping for a skoolie now and those thoughts consistently cross my mind. My heart breaks for both of you! I know that feeling so well and it sucks. Some people don't care that they've "broken" you and it's disgusting. Sending you all the hugs!!!!!

Yeah true. If it was just a hike we would have carried it, but when you are climbing the bags are left unattended a lot so we thought it would be safer in the van 😂😂 irony eh. We are installing a safe so that if we do leave things in the van at least they are in a more secure place 💕💕
@@phillyandkeely I was going to mention a safe but figured you were already doing that. I often stash items nearby or along the way if possible in a way it would take a trained tracking dog to find it :-) All the best on your continued travels.

@@lavapix A safe is good option but it's best to not put the safe in plain sight. It's best to have it hidden behind something unassuming where a robber wouldn't know to look. Seeing that might be reason for some robbers to return and demand they open it thinking there's heaps of gold to be had or just steal the van and take their time opening the safe.
@@u.2b215 Nothings foolproof other than not leaving valuables behind. There are other ways to do things but I won't divulge them publicly giving potential thieves an advantage.

Tips that come to mind: - Put $200 in small bills in a canister that can be easily found. The thief will probably grab that and any easily accessible electronics he/she can resell and leave the rest alone. - When leaving to hike at a scenic spot, say goodbye and offer other parting words as if you are leaving someone (or a pet) inside the van. Chances are the potential thief is nearby scoping out the scene and will take a pass on breaking in. - If you feel unsafe but must exit your van, put up a sign that says, "Quiet please. Grumpy teenager inside sleeping." It will amuse passersby as well as deter someone from entering.
@@phillyandkeely Perhaps install a super loud alarm system and ALWAYS carry your passports on you where ever you go Also maybe install a kill switch . The ppl who did this have karma coming so don't worry too much. Pin hole hidden cameras up high might also be an idea Good luck out there 🇦🇺

Some people don't realize that "Ill gotten gain never prospers". I've seen this happen to far too many van lifers and it's always heart breaking. Dome life had their entire trailer stolen and although they have purchased new everything and been given replacement gear as well. They are still not comfortable leaving their trailer when they wilderness camp, even with beefed up locks, tire locks and security. They only leave it in designated campgrounds as they have adventures. It's been a number of months and you can still see the trauma. Hope you're able to recover quickly and know that most of humanity is good. It's just the bad apples that stand out and make things slimey sometimes. God bless.

Thanks Alex we checked the ones in the surrounding area but they were all official ones that are linked to police database, so they know if it's stolen and none of them had seen them, so apparently they are more likely to sell them on street markets 💔💔

Thanks 🥰🥰🥰 we thought they would take fingerprints at the police station but they said there is no point 😂 so they simply filed a report with a list of everything that was taken and any serial codes we know etc. The Spanish police were really lovely and sympathetic but were realistic about the fact that nothing was probably going to come from it 😂 I think we were hoping for fingerprints and CCTV stalking and asking neighbours etc. But none of that happened. Apparently it's common in that area we just didn't know. 💔💔

The kindness from people has truly humbled us. So much good in this world. I always think with negativity and stuff that is something people have to carry around on them, and now I wonder if it's the same with theft, it will be a burden on them. Praying they are caught and noone else has to experience any loss at their hands.

After having 2 cameras, 1 suitcase, snorkel gear, jewellry stolen during a lifetime of travel, the only thing I have learned was no matter how safe you try to be, there is always somebody out there watching you like prey & waiting for an opportunity. Never travel with valuables, carry your passport & papers/credit cards/cash on your person at all times, & never let the bad guys out there rob you of your love of travel & sense of wonder. Its the good travel memories that last a lifetime which are priceless.

@@vibecat4899 i am an old woman & my snorkeling days are over. Lol. But i still travel with a cloth hobo shoulder bag draped across my
body so nobody can grab it off me. I have a hidden (under my shirt) small zippered cloth case strapped to me carrying passport, travel papers/important phone #s & credit card/currency that I have been known to sleep with on or under my pillow at hotels/hostels. Plus at all times I keep an extra credit card & $100 in 20's inside my bra on the side. (In a pinch, lots of people/places accept American cash 24/7 if no ATMs around.) And I don't wear expensive watches/jewelry, designer label clothing/shoes or show my phone often on the streets when i travel. I pack light & carry nothing that I will cry over if its gone. I have solo traveled all over for almost 4 decades & theft is universal, happens at expensive places in broad daylight & inside religious cathedrals as much as at dark hole in the walls or camping in tents, not exclusive to travel but seems to go with the territory. Like bed bugs, undrinkable tap water, overcharging, and cancellations/delays. But the benefits of travel outweigh the risks more often than not. Just be prepared for the worst case scenario, dont ever risk your life over possessions, and always remember tomorrow is another day.

I have constant van-anxiety about being broken into, but I have to remind myself, we live in a van so we can see the world, and sometimes bad things happen and the few ruin it for the many, but they cant steal your spirit or your experiences, so that's what counts! I don't know why people act like it's more likely in a van or rv? Homes get broken in to all the time as well. I wonder which is more likely?
All I can add to that is whilst we live in London in the van. We witnessed attempted break ins to vehicles almost every week without fail. The longest we went without witnessing someone trying to break in was 23 days, then our van was graffitid lmao. Vehicle crime is rampant. To the point where police in London don't even come out they just tell you to log it online to get a number for insurance. We knew numerous people who lived in homes who had cars broken into, but noone who had their home broken into. I reckon vehicles are easier to get away with. But you are right homes get robbed too, it would be a very interesting statistic to compare them, I'm only going off my personal experience and in a city, so can't be scaled up to everywhere obviously. In different area it might be more homes, whatever is the easier target I suppose.

@@urbannomadslife The difference at least here in the USA is that the robber never knows if they will be met with a homeowner holding a gun. The robber can pretty much tell when a van or car is vacant. They break the window and if no one yells at them, it's a free for all. So vehicle crimes are much higher than home invasions.
I feel you both! I was broken into in Rome, work laptop, DSLr camera, 360 camera. Rome Police were rubbish couldn’t even get a report for insurance.
Aww flip, I'm sorry to hear that, it's just the worst feeling isn't it. Even though the Spanish police couldn't really do much to get our stuff back they were so so kind and sympathetic and did a whole report for us. Sounds much better than the police in Rome!!! Same outcome ultimately, but at least made us feel like something was happening lol. Did you upgrade your security after it? We are going to install a safe and some antismash film on our windows too.
I mean this in a supportive way: this video gave me such a sick feeling in my stomach. Absolutely. Friggin'. Gutted. The speed you two bounced back from this back into a positive brain space is beyond commendable. Glad you have security cameras now, but also sad they are necessary. We were expecting lots of people victim blaming and being mean after sharing this, but the world is full of compassionate, kind, empathetic and generous humans. I have been told to stay clear of Spain as it is notorious for robberies. Too bad, hear it is wonderful in so many positive ways.
It is still one of our favourite places for vanlife. We have loved it so much. I'm just so sad to experience and hear so many stories about robberies 💔💔💔

I know this was a year ago, but this saddens me on all levels. Your home, as you said, is violated. To see your resilience in this horrible situation is impressive and inspiring. You were so happy when the glass was replaced, and the glass vacuumed up. So, glad that both of you are safe and hope the insurance replaces your camera. To see you reaching out to the person who vandalized your van. Maybe it will make them feel guilty. One could only hope.

What a shit experience - feel so sorry for you both. It's so horrible to have your van smashed and stuff stolen. We were away from home just before one Christmas and our house was burgled. All the children's wrapped presents were stolen, Cathy's engagement ring was taken too. It was a horrible time. But later we came to realise it's only stuff, we were insured and we weren't hurt. But it still felt horrible. So hope you're OK and look forward to following your future adventures. Stay safe and happy. 😊

Yeah definitely recommend taking it seriously. We always thought some people went overboard.... Now we are going to be overboard 😂😂😂 you can get antismash film for your windows, so that's a good shout to add to slow down any smash and grab situations. We will be installing it ourselves as we are cheap, to get done professionally it's like £300. To be fair the professional stuff is meant to be bomb proof, but I reckon smash proof is probably enough lol.

I came home from work one day and noticed my front door wasn't closed all the way. I noted it, thought it was odd, and entered my house as normal. It took me several minutes to comprehend what I was looking at once I entered in and closed the door behind me. Allllllll my stuff had been gone through and thrown all over. We had been robbed in broad daylight and they took all my expensive electronics, tools, jewelry, and even rummaged through my (at the time) 2 year old daughters room and belongings. The fear set in, the feelings of violation set in, and the knowing that some stranger had been in my home, took what they wanted, and touched my private things with their flighty hands made me absolutely sick to my stomach....for years. In fact, it still does. I'm shopping for a skoolie now and those thoughts consistently cross my mind. My heart breaks for both of you! I know that feeling so well and it sucks. Some people don't care that they've "broken" you and it's disgusting. Sending you all the hugs!!!!!

Yeah true. If it was just a hike we would have carried it, but when you are climbing the bags are left unattended a lot so we thought it would be safer in the van 😂😂 irony eh. We are installing a safe so that if we do leave things in the van at least they are in a more secure place 💕💕
@@phillyandkeely I was going to mention a safe but figured you were already doing that. I often stash items nearby or along the way if possible in a way it would take a trained tracking dog to find it :-) All the best on your continued travels.

@@lavapix A safe is good option but it's best to not put the safe in plain sight. It's best to have it hidden behind something unassuming where a robber wouldn't know to look. Seeing that might be reason for some robbers to return and demand they open it thinking there's heaps of gold to be had or just steal the van and take their time opening the safe.
@@u.2b215 Nothings foolproof other than not leaving valuables behind. There are other ways to do things but I won't divulge them publicly giving potential thieves an advantage.

Tips that come to mind:
- Put $200 in small bills in a canister that can be easily found. The thief will probably grab that and any easily accessible electronics he/she can resell and leave the rest alone.
- When leaving to hike at a scenic spot, say goodbye and offer other parting words as if you are leaving someone (or a pet) inside the van. Chances are the potential thief is nearby scoping out the scene and will take a pass on breaking in.
- If you feel unsafe but must exit your van, put up a sign that says, "Quiet please. Grumpy teenager inside sleeping." It will amuse passersby as well as deter someone from entering.

Some people don't realize that "Ill gotten gain never prospers". I've seen this happen to far too many van lifers and it's always heart breaking. Dome life had their entire trailer stolen and although they have purchased new everything and been given replacement gear as well. They are still not comfortable leaving their trailer when they wilderness camp, even with beefed up locks, tire locks and security. They only leave it in designated campgrounds as they have adventures. It's been a number of months and you can still see the trauma. Hope you're able to recover quickly and know that most of humanity is good. It's just the bad apples that stand out and make things slimey sometimes. God bless.

Thanks Alex we checked the ones in the surrounding area but they were all official ones that are linked to police database, so they know if it's stolen and none of them had seen them, so apparently they are more likely to sell them on street markets 💔💔

Thanks 🥰🥰🥰 we thought they would take fingerprints at the police station but they said there is no point 😂 so they simply filed a report with a list of everything that was taken and any serial codes we know etc. The Spanish police were really lovely and sympathetic but were realistic about the fact that nothing was probably going to come from it 😂 I think we were hoping for fingerprints and CCTV stalking and asking neighbours etc. But none of that happened. Apparently it's common in that area we just didn't know. 💔💔
