  • Gary Burton Quartet plays live at the Newport Jazz Festival 1968 (no.4)
Gary Burton (born January 23, 1943) is an American jazz vibraphonist, composer, and educator. Burton developed a pianistic style of four-mallet technique as an alternative to the prevailing two-mallet technique. This approach caused him to be heralded as an innovator, and his sound and technique are widely imitated. He is also known for pioneering fusion jazz and popularizing the duet format in jazz, as well as being a major figure in music education from his 30 years at the Berklee College of Music.
Red Norvo (born Kenneth Norville, March 31, 1908 - April 6, 1999) was an American musician, one of jazz's early vibraphonists, known as "Mr. Swing". He helped establish the xylophone, marimba, and vibraphone as jazz instruments. His recordings included "Dance of the Octopus", "Bughouse", "Knockin' on Wood", "Congo Blues", and "Hole in the Wall".

I bought the Album when I returned from Viet Nam and must have played it a thousand times. This is the first version that brought me to Tears!
    Perfection. Thank you.

By heavens Gary Burton must have been only 25 years old and already a total virtuoso. One can only wonder how many hours of his youth he put in for developing that incredible talent. Seems just like Bill Evans he landed on the scene fully developed. His playing still thrills at the age of 79 - and teaching - Incredible.

I'm just a bit out of a different fairy tale, but I love watching your video. In fact, I travel with music a lot, so maybe I will use this video. Greetings from Ireland.

Norvo was an original; he sounds like a piano without vibrato. Gary Burton sounds like Gary Burton.
