- Red Norvo (born Kenneth Norville, March 31, 1908 - April 6, 1999) was one of jazz's early vibraphonists, known as "Mr. Swing". He helped establish the xylophone, marimba, and vibraphone as jazz instruments. His recordings included "Dance of the Octopus", "Bughouse", "Knockin' on Wood", "Congo Blues", and "Hole in the Wall".
Tal Farlow, born as Talmage Holt Farlow, (Greensboro, 7 juni 1921 - Manhattan, 25 juli 1998) was an Amerikaanse jazzgitarist.
Red Norvo and Tal Farlo performed together with their bassplayer Steve Novosel at the 1982 North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, The Netherlands on 18 July.

Don't forget to give some love to Steve Novosel, the extraordinary bassist supporting Red and Tal in this video. The way he anchors the trio is amazing. It's so refreshing to see and hear these absolute legends really listening to each other while remaining free to improvise. This is the highest order of jazz.
Lord, Tal Farlow changes complex chord forms as fast as some guys play lines. What an awesome genius as all these guys are.
This is like watching a master class.
My father Earl Crouse was a good friend of Tal's. Used to play with him way way back
Played with Red & Tal in Leeds 1981. An honour and privilege!
What did u play?

"My romance".That's not a solo guitar, that's a pure music.Tal has always been a guitar-chord giant. His single -note soloing is also untouchable.
こんなに楽しくメロディクなjazzいつまでも聴いていたい気持ちです。jazzとは幅広いものですね。スピリチュアルなのも良いけど🎉🎉
Jazz is a kind of Classical Music, my friends.
I got to meet Tal & Red that same year at the Midland Jazz Party! Tal was so nice, let me play his guitar, and hung out with h him all evening.
I love the fact that they put up a mic in front of Tal's guitar. He can turn way down when he's comping and get very percussive; great sound!
If you notice that Tal is not comping with 4/4 old school style that they used to do, but music still swings, the bass player is playing three parts walking bass line with changes and complimenting the players and yes playing the rhythm( like a drummer). Tal plays the chords on the ALL OF ME like there are 200-chords. And Red Norvo is the real deal somehow they all mesh together..this is the American art form and their artists in their prime. JAZZ is the American invention. Individual Freedom of expression while they all listen to each other. YES.
I'm so glad I caught this concert . Top quality jazz by three past masters of their instruments . Lovely skills , interplay fabulous , you name it they have it . Thanks for posting
Super concert !
I've only watched the first song and it's taken me an hour cos I keeping stopping to transcribe Tal's amazing licks!
Hermosa música !!! jazz del bueno
i didn't think it was possible to smile with your jaw on the ground....but i just did...beyond words....Ty from s.oz
Gran Trio . The Best !
All, this a great opportunity to see how Tal approaches rhythm. I met him and asked about it and he said he just did scratching on the records without playing chords. This was in 1997 when he was nearly at the end of his life, so memory fades. He was a very kind mind. I asked him how it felt of being a living legend and he just laughed it off.
Ok….going to pull out my Talmadge Farlow Doc and watch it again…..Tal Farlow, love him….
Red's Great but I'm a Guitar guy and Tal Farlow's playing here is just mesmerizing also the interplay Tal did with Lenny Breau another Guitar legend is a must listen to called "Chance Meeting" I believe

Red Norvo, the vibes player, is my cousin.
You must be 120. Welcome to the club! Charlie Chaplin is my nephew. (So what, who cares?)
Oh Gods!!
Wow. Red Norvo and Tal Farlow on video. Excellent. Not an easy find and most important: beautiful music by two jazz legends. Beautiful instruments too. Anyone knows what kind of bass is that?
Not sure but it looks like the old Ampeg upright electric.
Someday they will discover that aliens have lived amongst us and, surely, Tal Farlow will be listed. His command of the guitar is undeniably out-of-this-world (along with Ted Greene and Lenny Breau)

Prada.
This perfectly illustrates why I say if you're going to study jazz guitar listen to vibe and clarinet players. They generally play smooth and melodic lines. Tal plays alot of notes but in my opinion are not melodic.
The audio on these is ALWAYS low! Why can't you fix it? Otherwise, you might as well stop posting these videos at all.
oh boo fucking hoo, turn up the volume. Thanks for posting these amazing videos! dont stop uploading please!
@James Smith - Nothing wrong with audio volume on these videos. Suggestion ... Upgrade your equipment or, meaning no disrespect, have your ears checked ; I did, and having been fitted with hearing aids, found the improvement amazing !
Download a sound booster. I've found that every few days, you have to play around with it, sometimes turning it up, sometimes actually turning it down, but it does a nice job of raising volume.
James Smith, you are correct. The sound IS very low. It needs to be up full to hear it properly. Any comparison with a properly recorded upload to youtube proves this.
The sarcastic critics in this thread can go and fuck themselves.
@@russellparratt9859 Sorry you are experiencing difficulty. For the rest of us, with good playback equipment, it's just fine.
