    Nuff bitter people on here. Listen Roddy is a Legend straight up, he played Reggae back when it was not popular outside of Jamaica and only Reggae. The man has been pure comitted to the scene for TIME and has got the scars to prove it. I think his battle chest of Dubs from every big time artist since the 80's speaks volumes honestly.
    Reggae is about ONE LOVE leave the bitterness at home.

      Uncle Sleven no that's not true reggae has always been popular in those times it was not mainstream in the uk but it was popular amongst blacks mainly David rodigan got a mainstream radio show when reggae wasn't popular amongst white people I will give him that

    • @unclesleven7256
      @unclesleven7256 7 лет назад +3

      I feel you Tommy, just doesn't feel right people trashing him when all he has ever tried to do is spread the sweet reggae vibes? I know for a fact that radio show made reggae mainstream in mainstream society in the 80's, if you wanna call it white society fair enough but a lot of other black people heard that show on the world service.
      I think if you asked him yourself I reckon he would say himself 60's and 70's systems were crucial and that the scene was great then he just came in later and did everything he could because he fell in love with the it.
      The man clashed BARRY G in 83! I mean cmon man. Everyone remembers those great times I think we should all just spread these sweet sounds to everyman we can.

      Speaking highly about a "Radio DJ" who NEVER owned a sound or made an effort to BUILD a Sound System & play to the ghetto here in London. Transforming Sound System presentation from floor level WITH the people to on stage jumping around nonsense. Don't rate him from he played ON MY yout sound in 87. Big Up Original Mikey Dread & Tony Williams. 2 guys doing it BEFORE Rodigan. Sound System DIDN'T play in clubs, that where rodigan & snobs went. Dont even talk about Clashing when Rodigan NEVER knew the art & have dubs & couldn't play 45. Our parents who CAME from Yard were getting pres from relatives & didn't NEED no radio dj to highlight these tunes. The same thing sound men were doing anyway.

    Mikey Dread is a legend and arguably part of the second best reggae soundsystem in the world. He is entitled to his opinion but most of us weren't there so we don't know really what went down. It's between them. But just as Mikey Dread is a pioneer and responsible for bringing education and joy through playing reggae so has Rodigan and anyone who has ever suffered prejudice can also appreciate that despite him being white and not from poor circumstances he faced his own persecution on the journey of him being part of putting reggae on the map. Whatever people want to accuse him of, over the many years he earned his stripes and worked hard and at the end of the day probably knows a damn lot more about reggae music here than most of the people on here complaining about him.

    When I was at JBC, I did a demo program for David Rodigan from London who used to write me as a penpal saying he would one day like to do a reggae show like mine in England. He asked me to do a show and mail it to him. I did it and he took it to the BBC and they thought he did it and gave him a job. I went to London in 1979 to do some PR work on my first album, “Dread At The Controls”, for Trojan, and brought my jingles and my knowledge to show and teach Rodigan: why I played this, why I played that song, etc. I schooled him (I am not a racist - but I see why some Black people were against me in London for showing Rodigan anything. They hated him and advised me not to do it. Rodigan knew what he was doing. I was told I was being used - but I said let’s keep reggae on the airwaves in London - and I ignored what their caution. Today, I take the blame, I was warned more than once, etc - and if you should interview Rodigan, ask him how he got his first Radio job on BBC ask him who showed him about using jingles (my jingles were his first jingles) - as no one in the UK knew of this style of Radio. Dread Broadcasting used to use my tapes and re-broadcast them, I loved them for this. Sound systems used to cut Dub plates from my show which was and still is Hot Property in the UK. Today, I see Rodigan and all those pseudo people taking credit and acting like they have amnesia and such - but time will tell. David Rodigan can’t pay me for giving him a career in Reggae and making him a somebody. Did anybody know of him before I put him on UK radio? Who is this reggae invader, anyway?

      57 years of age now and been around for some time. I like you have been around from the 60s. Died for Black music on the radio in London where I grew up. Frustration was the word of feeling for a long time and pause pushing on my keyboard cassette recorder.
      So I feel what you are saying...
      Excuse my ignorance for not coming across you or this post about you before now.
      But since the br'uck' with Lloyd Coxsone, it got me wanting to find out more as to why David has been 'crowed' King...'
      There was a time when the Chinese treated the late great Bruce Lee with contempt because he exposed Jeet Kune Do & Wing Chun ( Kung Fu ) to a completely different culture, so if as you say people cussed you for sharing your knowledge in and around 1978, take comfort from the fact that today BBC 1 is still playing Reggae and all the subcultural music that has sprung from Jamaican music. Beleive me, it was a mega negative BBC radio backed by a racist board of directors who did not like anything which they considered unorthodox and minority.
      I would have thought David would have given you some credit.
      One thing for sure, and like anyone who is clever enough ( and ''completely nuts'' for something... As David says), why wouldn't he take full advantage as that wicked Welsh pirate Captain Morgan did BITD..?
      King, he is not. ( His book,' My Life in Reggae' may suggest that, but does David actually claim himself that he is..?)
      A maestro he certainly is & Dam clever. Nevertheless, if he has not given a BIG UP to all those Sound men who was there long before him, that is where the hate, anger, and racist remarks are coming from.
      David has the platform to himself, he could use it if he chooses, however, he wants...
      The Apollo Club in Willesden, I remember well. Booed and jeered at the star of the show was putting it mildly! Bouncing Ball club in Peckham and Gossips just off Wardour Street, remember that well!!!
      If you have AV media, please share it on RUclips. It is the past that is taking us thru' to the future.
      My family is actually from Clarendon. I would have loved to have seen that clash with 'Bodyguard Soundsystem' back in 91.
      The way I see it... It's like Waggy T. He is a Chinese Jamaican deejay, sound system operator and selector from way back ( last I heard he was in Canada...) and got plenty of negative vibes when people realized he was not Black Jamaican...
      You remember Yellowman...Need I say more about the nasty way his own people treat him back a yard when he was coming up.
      Yet King Yellowman stands tall and shines thru' all the negativeness he had to endure growing up ...
      And David will continue to do the same. And add more fame. Some say, primarily, because he is a white Englishman who boldly went where no man went before him... Back a yard and took something totally Jamaican and made it a household abstract word on the mouth of plenty non-white as well as European people along with all the greats like Bob, Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Decker, Jacob Miller, Toots Hibbit and not forgetting the one hit wonder gal, Millie, as well as many many more!
      Tommy Smith ( Is how you get such a pretty English name anyway...I am curious to know?
      And what was your radio programme called. Apart from Bodyguard sound, I also know Vulcano sound as well as Kilimanjaro from its beginnings. Those sounds will have featured highly with you back then.
      Use your position and tell us more. People are listening!
      With 'nuff respect!

    I think what some people are missing in the Rodigan or Robb and Gone debate is exactly what the title on this RUclips clip says 'Pioneeer' or in the ITV video where Rodigan was labelled the Godfather of reggae music- a pioneer is someone who is the first or amongst the first to create or discover something- just like Columbus was not the first to discover America as there where idegenous people their already - Rodigan was not the first or amongst the first to spread reggae music across the UK and Europe- that recognition should go to the likes of Sir Coxsone- What I and many take offense to is that in many interviews such as this one when Rodigan is introduced as a pioneer or godfather he does not correct/school or acknowledge the REAL pioneers and Godfather as real a student of the music should do-it-as a sign of respect to his peers that came before him

      Micky Dub ::
      You may be missing the messages because you are stuck on the messenger's looks!!
      In any environment it is always best clever to have a local bring it to the masses. Reggae is popular in Japan and Korea. Guess what, the main promoters (day in & day out) are Japanese who speaks little if any English at all.
      Sometime back I saw a reggae show that was not in English and with a local spin version. It was quite different yet exciting to be there.

      Tommy Smith no disrespect but does he have to have a hit record or produce tracks and rhythms to be a "pioneer". If u take time to listen to this interview or even do a little research I think you will have a different view of the master rodigan. He will be forever remembered for pioneering this music we love called reggae. Poineering develop or be the first to use or apply (a new method, area of knowledge, or activity).

      Rodigan is a radio dj that move on to soundsystem clashing and because he was white he brought the music to new audiences but he's not a pioneer I do respect his knowledge of reggae music and his work over the years but if you know about reggae and soundsystems you would know rodigans music talent is mediocre and when ever he went against real reggae pioneers he got slaughterd most of rodigans fame relied on the fact he was white like it or not thier were many white people doing and in reggae before rodigan

    david rodigan is reincarnation of henry morgan the pirate. All of us from jamaica love music, before david robberman rodigan there was alex pascal.tony wiliams'steve bernard and all of the sound system promoting reggae in the 60s all the way up to the70s'80s90s to where we are now back in them days you never had any black people on the radio or t v apart from the odd one .in england you had no one on the radio apart from those three guys i have mention.then around 1978 this ball head bwoy david robberman pops up on radio london &then capital radio goes to jA learnt some knowledge then gets a slot on the radio playing reggae all that punk david roddigan has done is take take take. what has he given back to black reggae music who has he sponsored, black busines'black charities i tell you how many just one himself and is pockets.just because he speaks polite has manners when he is around us you all say he is a pioneer dont make me laugh the sound system owners from the 60s shouid be getting credit not that coot david ballhead roddigan
