When I was a youth, around 1979 [ i was 15 yo ] I had a little job working weekends, as a dishwasher, in Toronto. There was a literally underground Jamaican Night club, that I passed on my way to work, in the morning... Still going from the night before... Heavy sounds were erupting from this place..I am "White" and at that time would NEVER go down the stairs to that club no matter what...BUT..the sounds coming from there were so GOOD, that I would stop to listen...I could smell Ganja, and I liked to smoke it even then.. I thought those were the BEST, COOLEST sounds musically I ever heard...I was late for work many times, listening to these heavy bass and dub... I almost got fired for my tardiness, so I left home EXTRA early so I could sit out side the entrance, and listen for 15 -20 minutes.. I really wanted to KNOW how I could find records of that music...
One day while I was listening, a big "Scary looking" guy with massive Dreadlocks came out and looked at me and asked me what I was doing. I just looked at him, I wanted to run away... I thought he was going to kill me, the way he was looking at me...So I told him, that I come here to listen to these really incredible sounds and music.. His face lightened up and he laughed..and asked me "Really? YOU like the sounds of Jamaican Music?..." I said Yes... I know some rocksteady, and that, my Mother is from Trinidad, But I never heard THIS kind of Reggae in my life... He told me, "Alright young Rasta..You wait here one moment..I'll be back"...I did not know what to think or do, I might be late..again..or maybe worse...I waited..he was gone a long time...I was just going to leave, when he came up from below and said "Hear this, I hope it will be satisfactory"..He handed me a cassette Tape, It said "King Tubby's" & on the other side it said "Jammy's Dubplate", It had a partial track list. Then the man said to me: "Now that is a gift...don't come back here and hang around the front door way..you can come around Sat & Sunday afternoon and ask For Bunny W-" [I still Have that cassette, stored away somewhere] That is the story of how I got turned on to King Tubby, and DUB. I still listen to Duubplates almost every day.

Yes, my friend. I will try to convert it, mind you, a lot of the material can "sort of" be found here on YT but it is NOT the same, they [the tape] were mixed up well and all analogue. Thank you, and much peace and love to you! PcbH.

Listening to Rodigan does not know much about King Tubbys, I know Tubbys in 1968 I went to Waterhouse to lived. I was not too far from him ,whenever time he started to played his sound system. I could stay at my house, and hear him very clearly.
I have never been in his studio but I been into his yard ,and went to couple of dance when he was playing. During those days King Tubbys was the greatest sound system to ever played in Jamaica, before the police them destroyed his sound system in St Thomas.
But no sound system could beat King Tubbys he was the greatest sound system, I have listened a lot of sound systems and.
All now I don't hear nothing like King Tubbys at all, because he was a technician. I useto go there when URoy was the only man with King Tubbys himself in those days, operating and selecting records.
I was in Waterhouse the day when King Tubbys got killed after leaving his recording studio, to his Duhaney Park.
Since King Tubbys died the music industry in Jamaica is not like when he was around, because he was very creative. I don't remember from such time he was killed, anyone is ever got caught for his death. It is a very sad,sad day for the music fraternity in Jamaica until now. Let King Tubbys soul RIP,the greatest in the world.

    King Tubby-
    - Born 1941 was an electrical engineer turned producer.
    - trained King Jammy
Versions started when they forgot to play the voice on a version that gave a new twist to music. The instrumental part allowed for artist to voice some of the stuff live and dem supm deh.
High pass filter. Squauky his signature sound. Not everybody had equipment that could do it.

The word 'KING' has association with power, ruler, wisdom and special. This man was given to us by the universe. An original mind added with significant know how and insight of his craft, it was he who educated himself and then inspired. People like Tubby don't come around to often. They're only with us for a short time. You have to engage, concentrate and acknowledge the wisdom before it is gone. Universe chose Tubby for the King...It's not, and never will be up for debate - He is and ALWAYS will be KING... King Tubby - original don gargon of musical instrumental interpretation of rhythm and melody. Salute! 🎵 ❤ 🎵

David Rodigan made it sound like King Tubby invented reverb and delay and other studios hadn't discovered it yet.
Early 'Jungle' for me was 1991 Rebel MC and Ragga Twins. Wagga Twin's song '18 inch speaker' was the first time I had heard the hip hop formula of layering a breakbeat on top of a musical loop where instead of the music loop and the breakbeat both being one measure of music, the music loop was one measure and the breakbeat was sped up to play two measures. IOW, the breakbeat was playing twice through and the music loop once.
Being a sampling hip hop enthusiast at the time I knew it was the result of trying to layer a funk/hip hop breakbeat on top of a slower tempo reggae loop. But instead of pitching down the breakbeat to sound slow they sped it up until it was in sync.
I am convinced this is how 'Jungle' was created. Later called 'drum and bass'. So when these interviewees say drum and bass is related to dub. Well to my memory the majority of early 'Jungle' was reggae loops. That's a bit more than related.

Dub reggae was in the 70's a bit before the 90's and drum and bass came before jungle, you seem a bit messed up with your timeline. Tubby was among a few forefathers and sound system culture should be shared, it wasn't only him, great as he was we should never forget Lee Scratch Perry and Niney the Observer.

@@jerryhelmet9612 My use of the term 'Drum and bass' is referring to the genre called 'drum and bass' not 70's reggae drum and bass.. People renamed 'Jungle' and changed it to 'drum and bass'. The double speed funk patterns over music grooves. Early Jungle was reggae loops with double speed funk break beats layered on top e.g. Rebel MC and ragga twins material from 91.

@@nzreggae2534 Drum and bass was around in the eighties, they then sped it up to produce jungle.

i noticed that to Ezekiel, Scientist did a lot of dubs wich where credited to King Tubby. ( Scientist is getting screwed over by many copyright holders, it's a shame) also Pat kelly did dubs for tubby's.
