I have enjoyed your videos, both part 1 and 2. It brought back memories of when i first got into crystals. I colected about 15 or 20 5 gallon buckets. I had alot to practice on, its been 5 years now and i came far ways. I had stopped for some time and realized i miss it. I now am in the process of getting all tools i need to make my crystal jewelry, no, i dont sell them but i give them away. Sounds strange but... the crystal tells me whom they belong to, more a feeling, guess its the empath in me. As you are one also, thats why you feel connected to nature, crystals especially. Anyway, i wanted to say thank you for reminding me how much it ment to me how important this is to me. I enjoy working with the crystals i find and seeing that my effort and heart i put in my work put a smile on a strangers face and a little light in their day. It's not easy, but it's important to show that even basic home tools can get the job done. Things have been busy this year. I'm making 200 mile round trips to the doctor, running a business, and trying to get content out. Hoping to get into some serious lapidary projects this season. With any luck, I'll be booking more local contracts. That's the way of things when more than one pay check depends on me getting business handled. ;)
Thank you. The 2 videos in that series are about using what you have to polish a stone. We all know there are compounds, and tools that can make the task much faster. I wanted to concentrate on thing around the house that allow the novice to experiment and decide if lapidary is a hobby for them before purchasing more refined equipment. Our hobby can be an expensive one if you don't have a foundation in basic smoothing and shaping. We're just trying to get people to explore their potential, and maybe encourage the next great revival of semi precious stones in North America.
This is a great tutorial series! I like how you show the "poor man's" way of doing it. I don't have space for any fancy tools right now, but I do have a gold pan and a whetstone!
I think learning how things are done with simple tools make you a more skilled artist when you have enough confidence to buy specialized gear to get what you want out of the stone.

I have a beautiful piece of carnelian agate, that I have been wanting to rough polish for the longest time, but I have been so scared to mess it up, because I have no tools, not even a dremel or a whetstone, all I have is wet sanding paper. But I am so scared I will mess the stone up. Do you think sand paper alone would be enough? You have been giving me a bit of courage, but I am still scared to do it. I tried using the sandpaper tubes an in mins it fell apart an the rubber well there was nothing left I did get stone wet but that's cuz I'm under the impression yr suppose to use water
You might have been using the wrong type of sandpaper. The drums I used are for stone and glass. The idea is also to use a light touch. It a slow process usually.

I'm on the Rogue River in Southern Oregon. About 50 miles from the California Border. Most, if not all stones we gather come from what is called the Wild Rivers Coast. These are a series of mostly inaccessible rivers that flow through the cascades and coast range to empty into the Pacific Ocean. I'm a little partial, but I moved here 10 years ago because I think it's one of the most beautiful places on the planet. ;)

The idea of the video is to give a beginner the confidence to try. America used to be a Lapidary giant. Every aspect of lapidary from lamps to intaglio. I present videos with wisdom for many levels of interest if you listen close enough. I know I'm dry in delivery. It's intentional to hide Easter eggs of wisdom. It's all intentional. I'm a really nice guy with a gruff shell who imparts bits of lapidary wisdom in a way that isn't pretentious or conceited. You may also notice I never endorse brands. What size grit are you using on your dremel drum?
It was 120 grit. Demonstrated as one of many possible ways to sand down a stone.

It's a Dremel Brand. I chose that tool because it can be purchased almost everywhere on the planet.
