I pretty much did the same thing when my oldest son wouldn't do his homework. I went into his room, unplugged his tv which back in the late 1970's was huge and so heavy, i dropped it by accident on the floor. It got his attention though.
As a parent you should take away a video game console if it is becoming a problem, after you have given the child a chance to do his homework or whatever. If he doesnt listen, then confiscating it makes perfect sense... Destroying something that you or a loved one purchased is stupid. There is no way for the kid to ever redeem himself at that point. They now have zero motivation to follow whatever rule they broke. I am ex military. As an NCO I had quite a few "Bad soldiers" You always have to give them a path to becoming a good soldier and doing the right thing, otherwise you will have an angry kid with live ammunition on their hands.
Honestly, context is key. We don't know how extreme this case actually is to know if smashing a controller is warranted or not, but to say that there's no situation where that's warranted at all is just plain dumb. If this kid is extreme about misbehaving, an extreme measure like this is totally appropriate. It's for his future.

Try being a Parent!!! Don't give your kids control!!! Wake Up Parents!!!
Love these parents who want to fix their child’s behavior when they could have fixed this from day one.
Perhaps a little too late but alright....
Easy said than done 😂

Electronic baby sitters
My heart broke when he smashed the controller. Give it to me instead
Yes. Teach the kid that destroying shit is a way to get people to do what he wants them to do. Excellent parenting advice
Or just don’t pay the internet bill 😂

I'm pretty sure you are a failure as a parent!
Congratulations, Dr. Phil. you just created another Daniel Ptetric!
Yes! Thank you!
Just watched this for the first time. Can someone explain the context behind this episode?
And people are clapping watching phill smash property sick bet he wouldnt do that to his grandchildren in front of their.parents.
That would be the parent's job to do, not Dr. Phil's job since he is not the children's parent.

Smashing that controller is vadalism . Thats not what you do infront of a child teaching him its ok for adults to distroy property ..,STUPID
Seems Mom has tried many things. If kids wont reason sometimes you *have to take "the control" ..Literally. He sure got the message then!!
