The food looked really good as well as being good for you. The pan fried noodles were my favorite growing up, and there's nothing like bitter melon to get what ails you back on track. My dad and his mom were both from Hoiping. Was great to listen to your guy's conversation. She seemed to really appreciate having you guys frequent her business and spreading the word around.
Great to hear your roots are from Hoiping. Since you understand the dialect, sometimes you'll hear something funny which I don't put in translation. Thanks for checking out my video.
Dan the Man!! Wow! Look at that!! All the flavors infused in the wok hay, you the lucky one and your mom get to eat that fabulously delicious Chinese food. Mr.Look At That...
I think I met this guy at place in san jose called house of genji on 1st st back 06'. I was still an awkward teen and he was a cool conversational guy... I looked older at the time and was with my parents...they heckled me for being short...
Most likely not me as I have never been to San Jose. Sorry to hear you were heckled when you were young. Thanks for checking out my video. Seasons greetings and all the best in 2025.
You sure like that Raiders cap. Have you spent time at Oakland Webster St. or Las Vegas Spring Mt Road? Both are good Chinatowns. Any favorite restaurants there?
I bought the cap the last time I was in Vega. That was in the 1990's. I don't think the chinatown was built in Vegas when I was there. I haven't been to Oakland's Chinatown but I have been to San Francisco's Chinatown a few times. I liked to go to the old Sam Wo's in San Fran. Thanks for viewing my video.
Great video...I asked my mom which village dad came from but, she doesn't know...she met my dad in Hong Kong...you Toisanese dialect is slightly different from mines but I'm still able to understand you 🤗
If you're dialect is different from mine, you're most likely Toisan. Most likely you can understand the manager here. Thanks for checking out my video.
Wow, that food looks amazing! I’m so grateful I live in Sacramento where you can find Chinese food like that. I am a Pizzaiolo and cook at an Italian restaurant. I wish I could get a job cooking in a Chinese kitchen but I’m also a giant tattooed white boy with a mullet. I never see anyone but other Chinese folks working in Chinese kitchens. Can non Chinese cooks get a job in a Chinese kitchen? I want to learn how it’s done.
I heard lately that Chinese restaurants are having a hard time hiring people. Some are even closing. The big obstacle would be language becasue a lot of Chinese people working in Chinese restaurants don't want to learn English, so it would be hard for an English speaking person to get a job in a Chinese restaurant. I would think the best approach is to try and convince an owner to work as a kitchen assistant doing side work and food prep on a part time basis. Then try and learn the cooking once you're in. Not sure if this really helps you any. I do do wish you good luck.
I went to a restaurant that was Santa Cruz that opened by a Caucasian guy. We discovered that when my brother in law was going to the restroom and he had to pass the kitchen as the restroom as beyond that. He couldn't believe it so he started taking to the chef and asked him how he ended up being a chef in a Chinese restaurant. He explained that he worked in a Chinese restaurant when he was young and the owner/chef taught him to cook. I couldn't believe it either as the food was very authentic.
My uncles bought houses within easy walking distance of Vancouver’s Chinatown back in the 70’s, while my parents had us living in majority white suburbs around Washington, DC where nothing was walkable and public transportation was spotty. I loved visiting family in Canada.
Yes, back in the 70's there were some nice areas near Chinatown and East Vancouver where a lot of Chinese people lived. I found these areas much more interesting too. Thanks for viewing my video. BTW, did you have a Chinatown anywhere in Washington?
Yes, you should buy a wok and try cooking. It really makes food taste better. If you have electric coil stove, get a flat bottom carbon steel wok. You can also use a flat bottom carbon steel fry pan which has more surface contact with the heat source. Thanks for checking out my video.
I believe this restaurant was known as Dragon Inn in those years. It has changed hands a few times in more recent years. Ithink there is a student documentary about the original owner, who owned several restaurants. Thanks for checking out my video.
@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV thank you for the detailed my information. My brother passed away in an apartment fire in 2003 with his girlfriend and 2 cats
Wow... so for lomein all the ingridients are just boiled together, and then drained. And then tossed back into a hot wok with a bit of oil and sauce... seems easy haha
I used to ask restaurants to not add MSG to what I ordered. Some were offended, some denied using MSG and some just ignored my request. Supposedly there are no side effects for eating foods with MSG but I always get a reaction when I eat it. Thanks for viewing my video.
Love these food videos with you and your mom. I enjoy listening to your mom speaking cantonese. I believe you when you say Vancouver has the best cantonese food in North America. Even Chinatown restaurants in the USA are beginning to cater more towards American tastes. A real shame!
It's great that you can understand my mom. It's a dialect that fewer and fewer people understand. I guess we have a lot of people migrating from areas in Asia where they cook great Cantonese and other regional Chinese food. Thanks for checking out my video.
Not many people know that BC has the best Cantonese restaurants in North America. Toronto GTA used to back in the 80s and 90s but it’s gone downhill. In the US,….haven’t been to a good one yet.
Yes, really good Cantonese restaurants in B.C. but there are some bad ones too unfortunately. Partly due to shortage of chefs and kitchen staff since Covid. Thanks for the feedback. Thanks for checking out my video.

Great to hear your roots are from Hoiping. Your mom was probably from one of the villages near Chiak Hom, (Chikan in Mandarin), so she more than likely would have run into some of my relatives in China. I'm not familiar with the village your dad came from. Thanks for checking out my video.
I live just a few blocks from this restaurant. The food is very good, but I can't enjoy it because they don't have combo's for one. I am a single person. They use to, but not any more. So I spend my money at another Chinese restaurant.
It's unfortunate this restaurant doesn't have dishes and combos suitable for one. They are missing out on a lot of business. Thanks for checking out my video.
It was a large bowl serving ten people. But it was lukewarm. We could have had a whole chicken entree. A lot of Chinese restaurants still include the daily soup and they just bring it without asking. When they ask you if you want soup, you're going to get charged for it. I experienced this in another restaurant after this one. Thanks for checking out my video.
Another Asian restaurant that keeps water running all the time when they don’t need to. As much as the food looks great and the reporter is useless repeating the same “look at that” I would love to see one of these restaurants using water responsibly
From what I understand, the water is running because of the heat generated from the heat of the woks cooking. It needs a redesign so there isn't as much waste of water. You're the first person to call me useless repeating "look at that". Despite that, you still called me a reporter. Much appreciated. Thanks for viewing my video.
"Wow... look at that... look at that... Wow... Is it ever tasty! Look at that look at that look at that!"🤣🤣🤣
I'm like a broken record. Thanks for checking out my video.
Im a chef and in my kitchen you dont clown around like that, you must pay respect.
Dan, thanks for the inside look as to how the chefs prepare the gourmet entrees.
A lot of non Asians have no clue as to the technique and skill.
You're very welcome. Often resturants won't let customers into their kitchen, so I was lucky. Thanks for viewing my video.
What a privilege for you to show us thank you
You're very welcome. I felt privileged to be in the kitchen. I have been turned down before. Thanks for checking out my video.
I’ve always been entranced when I see that flame blasting the wok when it’s lifted. Like a dragon!
For sure. Sometimes they call the flames the "breath of the dragon". Thanks for checking out my video. Much appreciated.

You just can't duplicate good Chinese food at home without that level of heat. I'm a Northern guy myself, but every they made looks damn good.
Yes, the intensity of heat makes a big difference in the taste of the food. Thanks for checking out my video.
I love Chinese food 🍲 🍜 my favorites 😍
The tents are mostly down now. Thanks for praying for Vancouver. Have a safe trip when you're moving here.
