- Jade Palace Chinese Restaurant located in Burnaby, B.C. serves delicious Chinese food in big portions and at reasonable prices. In this video, I got a chance to go in the kitchen and watch the master chefs cook some dishes. The dishes they were cooking include special chow men, sweet and sour spareribs and tofu skin stir fry over bok choy Chinese vegetables. Just watching the chefs in actions has helped me improve my Chinese cooking.
I believe this restaurant used to be the Dragon Inn. It was a popular Chinese restaurant many years ago.
The owners are from Hoiping (Kaiping) China, in southern China. Some of the food they serve is very similar to food in Hoiping, China. My parents' roots are from Hoiping, China. I often visit Hoiping and the surrounding areas there. Some of the food in Jade Palace Chinese Restaurant is similar to food served over there.
We reserved a table for ten guests for this video. The guests were from across Canada and from southern China, as well as vegan, so I had to balance the menu selection with food that would be happy for everyone.
I ordered 2 lobsters stir fry served with long life noodles. I like to choose lobsters about 2 lbs. I don't like to order bigger lobsters because you are just paying for the heavier shell
The dinner begins with the restaurant's daily soup, which was included with the selections made. The soup was a traditional melon soup which had a subtle taste but just right to start a big meal.
Next we had a whole free range chicken, which was included in the set selection. I like free range chicken because the meat is firmer and more taste compared to regular chicken. Next is the sweet and sour chicken balls. We always try to have one sweet and sour dish.
We also ordered the deep fried squid, which was lightly battered. It was quickly stir fried with salt, spices and chilis.
We ordered the two kinds seafood stir fried with Chinese vegetables called gailan. The seafood was prawns and scallops, which is always a good combination.
I ordered the preserved plum with pork chops. The saltiness of the dry plums added to the slightly tangy sauce is a delicious combination.
The beef and green bean stir fry is always popular with us. The black beans gives a nice salty flavor to the stir fry. The large slices of beef infused with the black beans is also very tasty.
I ordered 3 vegetarian dishes which non-vegetarians also like. The first dish was the Typhoon Shelter Style Eggplant. This style of cuisine was invented by the fishermen in the Typhoon Shelters in Hong Kong, The eggplant for this dish was sliced and stir fried with garlic, spices and chilis. Really impressive and delicious.
The second vegetarian dish was the deep fried tofu puffs stir fried with Japanese enoki mushrooms, served over a bed of broccoli florets. Really nice presentation and simply delicious.
The third vegetarian dish was the Buddha's Feast, which comprised Chinese cloud mushrooms, vegetables and vermicelli noodles. Nicely cooked with lots of wok hei, the sear from the carbon steel wok enhanced the flavors of this dish.
Buckets of rice was included with the set selections. This was welcome by all the guests because we like to eat rice with the delicious dishes.
We finished the great dinner with a baked Chinese pie. The crust was flaky and nicely browned. The filling consisted of duck eggs, bean paste. A nice dessert finished with several cups of pu'er tea.
W also got a chance to talk to the restaurant manager Jennifer. She is from Hoiping in southern China. It's also known as Kaiping in Mandarin. Hoiping is famous for the Dialolou Fortress Towers
Check out some of my videos on these Diaolou Fortress Towers in Hoiping,
If you get a chance, give this restaurant a try. The servings were big, delicious and reasonably priced. Enjoy!

Old school staple, I've been going there for decades. Great food at affordable prices. Love the video.

You should do some reviews on ToiSan food as you are ToiSan and so a I. Would be interesting
Thanks for your suggestion. My mom and I did some recipes in previous years. We will try and do some more in the future.
Just for historical accuracy, we are Hoiping, which is just a short bus ride from Toisan. Along with Sunwui and Yinping, we all speak the sub-variant Cantonese dialect known as "Sai Yip", which translates as Four Counties.
Your eating like a KING....Dan.
Yes, I feel very fortunate. Thanks for checking out my video.
I'm old enough to remember Dragon Inn so thank you for referencing that fact!
I used to pass by there all the time but I forgot it was the Dragon Inn until a viewer brought it up. Thanks for viewing my video.
I would suggest you to get a wireless microphone. Will be much better for audio
Yes, thank you for your suggestion. Some viewers have mentioned the same thing so I should get on it. Thanks for viewing my video.
Looks incredible! Except the squid batter maybe too thick for me. Thanks Dan love your videos.
It was more like a fish and chip batter. Nowadays the thinner batter is more popular. Thanks for viewing my video.
lol, I hear Taisan dialect.... man, you guys are old school...
Old school for sure. I speak the Hoiping dialect which is almost the same as the Taisan dialect. Both are part of the Four Counties dialect known as "Sai Yip". Thanks for checking out my video.
I need the recipe for chicken chop suey and sweet n sour chicken balls. I'm stuck in alberta and they don't make chinese food the right way. the BC way

Much appreciated. Thanks for checking out my video.
i love how some cooks in these restaurants dressed as if they were going costco shopping after work
So true! A lot of restaurants don't enforce uniforms in the kitchen anymore. Thanks for viewingmy video.
Have you gone to Jin sui Xiang bakery yet? I also can’t believe the manager came up to you!
I went to the Jin Sui Xiang Bakery to buy some sticky rice dumplings on June 13, 2023. I managed to do a quick video. I'll be posting that video hopefully shortly. Thanks for viewing my video.
Oh nicee and no problem
Are you serious, the place is a filthy dump.
From what I understand, this restaurant was renovated a year and a half ago. The present owners said they were the new so they might not be the owners who did the renovation. This restaurant was the old Dragon Inn which opened about 50 years ago. Thanks for checking out my video.
Sorry I'm Asian Chinese Vietnamese and I'm proud my heritage culture food but not everything dish is oil, saute, fried, too greasy not healthy nor taste good nor affordable. Try Vietnamese food lot better variety way eat, fresh herb salad steam boil use little or no oil but meal still tastes amazing healthy.
I like Vietnamese food and I have done positive reviews on Vietnamese restaurants. I have my own ethnocentric bias so I like Chinese food too. Thanks for viewing my video.
@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV you grew up and surrounded by Chinese so that's all you know eat Chinese food. My parents are mostly Chinese mixed 1/4 Vietnamese but in Vietnam so I get exposed to lot Vietnamese culture food too I was adopted by very Chinese parents and Chinese side looked down on Vietnamese side and me too but Chinese underestimate Vietnamese anyway we have big round double lid eye look best all people other too hairy etc.. very smart too, Vietnamese had kicked slaughtered millions of of France and US out the f Vietnam with half tiny population n weapon n less than 40 years independent we've catch development as China already. While China Taiwan still is controlled by West, Hong Kong Taiwan till 1996.
