1958 THROWBACK: "MAHALIA JACKSON"

  • In 1950, Jackson became the first gospel singer to perform at Carnegie Hall when Joe Bostic produced the Negro Gospel and Religious Music Festival. She started touring Europe in 1952 and was hailed by critics as the "world's greatest gospel singer". In Paris she was called the Angel of Peace, and throughout the continent she sang to capacity audiences. The tour, however, had to be cut short due to exhaustion. She began a radio series on CBS and signed to Columbia Records in 1954. A writer for DownBeat music magazine stated on November 17, 1954: "It is generally agreed that the greatest spiritual singer now alive is Mahalia Jackson." Her debut album for Columbia was The World's Greatest Gospel Singer, recorded in 1954, followed by a Christmas album called Sweet Little Jesus Boy and Bless This House in 1956.
    With her mainstream success, Jackson was criticized by some gospel purists who complained about her hand-clapping and foot-stomping and about her bringing "jazz into the church". She had many notable accomplishments during this period, including her performance of many songs in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues, singing "Trouble of the World" in 1959's Imitation of Life, and recording with Percy Faith. She was the main attraction in the first gospel music showcase at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957, which was organized by Joe Bostic and recorded by the Voice of America and performed again in 1958 (Newport 1958). She was also present at the opening night of Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music in December 1957

    From what I hear, every black family in America was tuning in or tried to tune in . My parents tell me when black people, especially celebrities appeared on television in 1950’s was a HUGE deal to the black community

    • @AC-kl8gi
      @AC-kl8gi 3 года назад +6

      Right. it was a really big deal when a black person appeared on Tv back then because it was rare (due to racism) The media would let very few through. And when they did, they became huge stars. I 'm 63 I remember when Aretha Franklin in 68 began getting notoriety. To hear a young Aretha sing in that Gospel style, and me being a teen, it was powerful. I was just watching a video of Mahalia singing on a show (in black and white) and at the end of her song, you could clearly hear a white man yell "stupid nigger". I pity that guy and those like him because unfortunately, that is one of the reasons Hell is going to have the millions and millions in torment. I feel bad for them.

    • @btinsley1
      @btinsley1 3 года назад +6

      it was a big deal even in the mid 1960s. I would hear my mom answer the phone & then say "change to channel 6...a black man is on tv". That happened many times in my youth.

    • @cgreen2984
      @cgreen2984 4 месяца назад +1

      It was still a big deal even into the early 70's. Two broadcasts that I remember cleared my neighborhood's streets when they aired were: 1) the Jackson 5's appearance on The Carol Burnett Show and 2) Roots. At 7pm, everyone was in their house in front of the TV.

      @@georgethompson541 that documentary of hers (Mahalia Jackson: The Power and the Glory) mentioned that in her fifties Mahalia became sort of acquisitive - she had quite enough money, she could've cared about her health better, instead she continued touring 'till she had a heart attack right on stage but still kept on. and it's really sad to know that money made her and Mildred apart, even more sad is that Mildred couldn't shine not half as bright as Mahalia since she was underpaid and now there's very little info on her. That reminds me of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh (when Bob Marley appropriated rights for Wailers and they Became "Bob Marley and the wailers", so Peter left and started his solo career). as he later sang "money can make friendship end, it makes friendship end". What ever did Mildred do after the went apart with Mahalia btw? i doubt there's too much info on that.
      Nevertheless neither Ella, nor Etta, not ever Aretha could sing half as strong as Mahalia.she was and is the best, as Martin Luther King said "a voice like that comes once a millennium" - I really doubt that we shall live long enough to hear a voice close to one of Mahalia, she's absolutely gorgeous, makes you cry and purifies your soul.
