Aw man, you're on to my secret of using ribbon mic for vox! Haha! I was surprised how yours sounded vs my MXL (seems like yours has less dynamics?). I also don't use headphones to record too often... I think on higher female vocals looking for some husk/depth, ribbon mic is the best!! I like that it sounds more like my voice in my own head (w/the bass & lower vibes).

One of my youngest kids knocked over my large diaphragm vocal mic (sE 2200a), so I'm currently saving up for a cheapish Lewitt (probably just the 440 Pure or 441 Flex) as a replacement. I tried to use a small condenser (AKG C1000S), but using a cheap dynamic (Lewitt MTP250DM) sounded miles better. Double tracking, with one of each mic, was OK...ish. So my last few projects I've, begrudgingly, used only the dynamic. I'm finding that I have to put a lot more EQ work in, as I usually use a condenser for lead vox, saving the dynamic for backing vox. It's definitely doable, but the vocal separation is harder to achieve. Plus it's a lot more work to get that lead vox sound, that inherently comes with a large diaphragm condenser. Would be interesting to see/hear you do a dynamic mic only recording, to watch your mixing process. All the best, dude!

The dynamic surprised me a bit.... I think I would say, dynamic; condensor; and last ribbon...... Ribbon sounds like the mids are very pronounced and that the highs have been ducked a bit..... So understand the use on electric...
It's odd to me that you use ribbon mics on loud sources, as ribbons are susceptible to damage from high s.p.l. my ear buds didn't detect much of a difference in the sound. You might consider not showing which mic is being used when asking the audience which sounds better, as which one looks cooler or what they're most used to using can skew their listening. Just a suggestion to be taken as you wish. I do agree that you should do a project with all dynamic mics (or even the same mic) just for shnits an shagles (if I may borrow a Warren Huett-ism).
If you do a little bit of searching online, you will find that ribbon microphones are one of the most popular microphone choices for Guitar cabinets. Royer 121, for example.

But I don't think they're really cranking the volume of the amp powering said cab, and likely backing it off a bit from where they would place an SM-57 or Sehnnheiser 609, or any other dynamic mic. You can probably get away with it for a time before the ribbon needs to be replaced; and they could've found more robust material to make the ribbon from then the ones 30 years ago, but the manufacturer will likely warn you against that practice as it will likely void any warranty.

I have some pretty good mics, but sometimes the best mic is the SM58 ($99). It just has a classic sound that works well with certain rock tracks. For that song, I predicted condenser AKG K240 MKII: On my current headphones (K240 MKII), the ribbon mic just right into the track, but just had enough presence to stand out. The condenser pushed through strongly. The dynamic was right in-between the two. It was stronger than the ribbon, but not as overwhelming with the condenser. Good golly the ribbon sounds amazing on these headphones Beyerdynamic DT-770: the condenser sounds a little harsh. The dynamic mic was a good match for the track. The ribbon mic works almost as well here, but on these headphones, they sound a little buried. Speakers: the condenser and dynamic are similar-ish to the DT-770s. However, the Ribbon mic just has that buttery sound again that I really like. I would say Ribbon with a caveat. A slight tweak to the EQ, and it'll probably sound amazing on the DT-770 headphones. The dynamic worked on all 3 sound outputs, but not as great as the ribbon sounded on the K240s and speakers. I think the compressor might have given the condenser some harshness. I don't hear the compression as much on the dynamic and ribbon That Ribbon mic reminds me of my Rode M.2. It sounds like absolute mud until you do things like put on a high pass.

I can attest that specific mike's make a difference. I had an older song, that I wanted to resurrect. It had a verse that was just song poorly. So I just needed to record it again. The condenser mike(and very good AKG) originally used had broken beyond repair and I had purchase a new condenser(Lewitt). I had to rerecord all the vocals. My voice sounded so much different on the new mike it just didn't work. Now it could have been my voice aging, proximity difference... But I really think it was the characteristics of the new mike.
There is a very simple answer to the question: NO, it does not matter...at least not very much. That is not to say that there are no differences. There are. But in the big picture it matters very little.
How do you get away with singing only 1 or 2 inches from the mic? If I do that with my SM58, it's so boomy like a radio announcer and it won't EQ out. Is that because it's cardioid and the Proximity effect?
I don't think even comparing them in a mix is valid. You're fitting them in at the end a pre-existing track. A ribbon can sound incredible in a mix, but you've got to build the production with the sound of a ribbon in mind.

I use a pair of PD-70s for a podcast I record for a couple guys here in Buffalo. Used to use SM7B. PD-70s sound better with them

With all the eq and compression that gets applied to vocals, it doesn’t really matter. Look at how much you altered the sound of the ribbon.

Nah. The 121 is rated at 135 dBSPL. They crank em all day every day.

Ribbon is awful for vocals. Maybe for guitar cabs it is good

do not judge sound from a phone speaker unless its your own mix and you've heard it before on something else
