When you see a clip of someone viewing the file size of graphics.com in MS-DOS, it doesnt matter if it is 19,742 bytes or any other number, you will know its shout to get bullied by Danooct1 once again. That poor file has done nothing to deserve it but he still loves to fuck it up
The 90's CGI is really creepy and unsettling. I actually felt sort of concerned for my computer despite knowing I'm safe and viruses don't really work like this anymore.
I was 15 when I got my first computer virus, names Pong. I was intrigued by it! I spend days disassembling it with debug and reverse engineering and then I realized something I’d never known but made sense come to think of it. A floppy even without MBR is always scanned for the MBR and that’s where the TSR code was. And it effortlessly nested itself in every disk you put in. Fascinating stuff. I learned more in 1988 alone about computing than in four years of college :)
Man, I wish I had in depth software and security knowledge. Then I wouldn't be poor.. But thank you N.N. your presentation here is adorable, as always.
Viruses looked for anti virus program running in order to attack them. Odds are its better to have no anti virus installed, then to have one. Next rumour - Norton and so on where said to make viruses in order to keep selling antivirus programs and subscriptions. Problem, reaction and solution, the World runs on just these three words.
Btw, while not a virus, we included batch files with deltree commands on all our floppies we carried to school. If caught the teachers would click every single file. Including porn.bat that would wipe the hd and floppy without requiring any other input using /y.
Ah, old school viruses... such a simpler time. Back before everything became malware building botnets, sending spam, and stealing data for organized crime. Now the things malware does are powerfully boring, but the ways they spread and operate are the fascinating part.
What about those viruses on 8-bit computers such as the C64? I heard those could somehow overwrite the ROM and make the computer pretty much as good as dead.
Is it just me or do viruses have a weird creepiness to them? Maybe it's to do with how powerless they can leave the user, or the fact they always have weird names
Are there any viruses that physically damage a computer's storage drives or logic board, possibly through overheating certain components to failure or locking up a hard drive by mechanical failure? Having a BIOS be permanently locked out is one thing, but seeing smoke coming from your machine or hearing the hard drive make some pretty horrendous noises is pretty alarming and scary enough to let you know something's wrong.
I remember way back when I was running Windows 98, I downloaded dodgy .exe files and tried to open them with several different programs to see what would happen 😂 When I tried to open them with winzip some of the files were actually just a zip containing the actual software AND some virus and I could just drag out the program and delete the rest.
Also big note : Copy protections also work like viruses, hence in the Sinclair Spectrum there was one game that if you copied it in a loaded the copy a message came up instead of the game. These copy protections worked exactly like a virus would - lurking in the back ground a a software supervisor watching a clocking up hardware IRQs and timeframes. Namely the worsed one of this is of course Sony's Root Virus which caused so much hell for all of us. This was a copy protection virus made from the RootKit Dlls. The worse real computer virus is the Australian Parasite Virus. This virus was mainly on Amigas but due to Atari ST and PC could read Amigas 3.5" discs it also spread to other computers. This virus could mutate and make up a different payloads and propergate with different computer technolgy. It also hid its propergation in track 1/2 (half), yes it did direct commands to the disc drive electronics to wobble the head worm drive from track zero to one, to write and read data on track half. Also hardware viruses... The famous one for this was in the Amiga 500 Gary chip. The programmer did not get paid so did a payload in the chip when time came it blew the drive up buy overworking or told it to goto track 81 or 1000 and overriding click pulses or sensors to break the worm drive mech or just plainly kept the head on write mode all the time so it scrambled any disc you put in. Most viruses are espinage (political or company for profit), disgruntled staff, global warfare, kid in his bedroom having a laugh.
One time, I had a virus to turn my Pentium 2 Windows 98 to do a Matrix green screen back in the 90's. My escape button wouldn't work, ctrl+alt+del or anything.
I moonlight in academia and I have to say...you should consider starting a professorship in computer engineering. It is the most rewarding thing a person can do. Further, if you can land a spot in a research university you would be on easy street. They would likely help fund your RUclips channel and give you all the resources you need to go truly nuts. Now, I myself do not work in a research university. I'm at a private college but even they are amazing. Even though I know quite a bit about PC's, I am a mere layperson compared to you. My field of expertise is in criminal psychology. I spend my days studying the criminal mind and what makes it tick.
Well, music trackers wud b the correct term. But yeah, those programs like Ultimate Soundtracker, which started it all on the Amiga, FastTracker, ProTracker, and so on up to more recent ones like MilkyTracker, how they entered the demo scene as well as games, etc. I just added mod support to an engine I'm writing 4 2d tile based games and learned a lot bout them. I first got 2 know this bit of technology on my 386 with Mar J. Cox's amazing modplayer (which magically seemed b capable of outputting digital audio through the PC Speaker ) and Norman Lin's Modedit 3.01. I had no idea all that got started on the Amiga, nor that it was created FOR games (which is what it's used 4 once again 2day in engines like UE4), nor the vast amount of trackers there were! And since I only ever used Modedit 3, which scrolls sideways and u lay out the notes up and down on a single channel, with the effects chosen from a section of the window on the top, as well as the current channel, the pianola layout of these things really surprised me (note: I consider the Modedit 3 interface superior in terms of usability). If u haven't yet done a docu on this, consider it. I 4 1 think it wud make 4 an interesting subject.
Hello Nostalgia Nerd. I've been a fan of your content since I came across it back in November. You provide your own unique twist on content that I find interesting even though I may have watched similar videos by other creators such as Lazy Game Reviews. What you produce comes across as someone that has an immense interest and knowledge of these things since the beginning of time and when seeing other RUclipsrs making this kind of content you have thought to yourself " Hang on...I have as much knowledge if not more than these guys and I could do as good a job if not better". And it is my opinion that you are up there with the best so keep it going. Now I've gotten the praise out of the way I'd just like to mention that this video seemed a little half hearted and came across as a trailer for the movie that is to follow. Perhaps you could invest in a full length Nostalgia Nerd special with regards to Viruses as to me this fell a little flat and I think you could do an amazing job on this subject matter. I hope this hasn't caused offense as I am a big fan and wish you all the best. Kind regards, Chris P.s Love the Bad Influence stuff - it's my childhood all over again!
I don't get it... Braine evaded anti-virus software, but it was the first ever computer virus. How does that work? I think we need a more in-depth dive into that subject! The gloves when handling the virus-infected discs got a chuckle out of me.
4:38 What? Norton being useless? I would never have guessed!
Norton has always had this problem , it prevents viruses but when they are in ,Norton cant do shite -My experience from 20years of computers

The only thing better than a NN video is one about Viruses!
One time, I had a virus to turn my Pentium 2 Windows 98 to do a Matrix green screen back in the 90's. My escape button wouldn't work, ctrl+alt+del or anything.
Reminds me of the time I had to use a bootable floppy to remove FORM from every single computer in our hs.

Yo Nerd, have u already done any documentary/ies on the history of trackers? That'd b kewl.
Audio trackers?

If a vrus infects a memory stick and the anti virus unable to detect it does creat it's own file but it's invisible to see?
How Does a Virus Work - Very well. Thanks!
My Shitbiscuit (aka: my Windows Vista PC) once got infected by Blaster, which acts like a damn antivirus, but not.

15:52 is "spankska" a typo? It reads "spanska" in the background

I had so much fun with it. I used it alot to annoy some friends of mine, at least for a while until I told them what I had done and how to get rid of it :D
I had fun with Netbus, which was the same concept.
LMAO! Just got a virus and what did it do?

Does anyone remember the Elk Cloner, the first virus created for the Apple II; I should also mention that a 15-year old high school student wrote it?
Can you get viruses simply by going a unknown site or do you need to download a virus

No mention of Key-Loggers ?
Key-loggers are in the Trojan category
Putting the first part of the video on iPad invert colors makes sense
i know this is completely unrelated, but the little one-eyed cymbal looking character shown in the 3d animation looks sort of cute. he's just a little fella.
Trojans, viruses, logic bombs, and worms are completely different! Trojan horse viruses are not a thing
Where did that animation come from?
The one in the beginning?
Danooct1 is my favourite youtuber also
I'm surprised, that CIH (Chernobyl) wasn't mentioned in this video, considering it's BIOS overwrite payload..
The colors are messed up
It's a virus. Out of my hands.

Absolutely. I love it.
Oh my x3 Its amazing I love this guy subscribed some years ago and Im still hocked what malware or Virus he has this week instore for us :3
Not all viruses have a 'destructive part'
I find I get less virus' since Google image search came out..... That's all I'm saying.... Can't think why......

Yeah, my mother got it on her PC, the worst part is that it needs installing of a whole different system to get rid of it, and antivirus programs dont even detect it.
The first virus was written by the CIA..... as so was Tor and so on.
