Earlier versions of OS X seemed to be an attempt by Apple engineers to get a Mac experience on NextStep in a hurry, even if it meant bypassing the security features. I remember hearing about inbuilt apps that were made to run as setuid root, automatically changing the permissions of any files they touched, so ordinary user tasks would fail. If I remember correctly, even the Apple menu was running as setuid root and could be convinced to launch apps with the same root permissions! Fortunately it seems that Apple has fixed a lot of that kind of stuff over the years, but I do still wonder whether there are egregious security problems still residing in the underlying system courtesy of a hurried 1990s Apple coder...
@@otherlego I think you may be confused, current versions of MacOS (and OS X) were built on the NextStep operating system (loosely), the operating system that was developed by NextStep, which Steve Jobs ran after he was fired from apple. What 3rdalbum is saying, is that while making NextStep more MacOS like, some things were rushed, and they fear that some of it might remain.
As for the permissions problems, Apple shipped with Mac OS X a utility that would repair any messed-up permissions on system files. The only reason it does not get viruses is because not a lot of folks use it overall. The learning gap between Linux and most other oses, despite possibly being actually very small, is impossible for the average user of computers, same type to fall for scams and shit like that. This leads to devs for viruses not existing, and even if they did, they would face tougher people they would have to trick, since, while they may not be smart still, average Linux user is about.... 0.1% smarter than the average pc/Mac user at the very least. It’s actually funny how easy it would’ve been to write this virus, probably some high schooler wrote it. Then you move on to trying out things on the school LAN. I used to mess around at random internet cafes back then when internet wasn’t easily accessible. Considering the Macs in the computer lab at my university were riddled with macro viruses via Microsoft Word back in the 90s, I never for one moment fell for the Mac hype and knew it was only a matter of time before malware became a bigger issue for them.
I’ve never heard of Leap, but I’ve heard of other Mac malware. Mac malware usually doesn’t have a ton of analysis or information about how it works, so Mac malware is still fairly obscure, however, it is still foolish to not have anti-malware software on your Mac and take proper precautions. I’ve been a Mac user for over a decade, and I do weekly backups to an offline external hard drive and have anti-malware protection. I also practice good computer security habits, like not executing a file if I am unsure of its source. While I believe XProtect is pretty robust, it’s only your first line of defense. Mac malware may be few and far between, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Why do you antivirus on a Mac? You mean like a program that detects if files downloaded are good or bad? Because Xprotect is literally goood enough. Set your settings correctly and you wont need any antivirus bogging down your speed or RAM. You literally have to be dumb to get malware on a Mac. Not even kidding. And this is from someone who got malware once actually twice on a mac. I stopped downloading bad files after that heh heh.
team macOS! I’ve been using macOS/ OS X since Snow Leopard and I’ve never had malware issues, just like any computer, all you need to avoid viruses on macOS is a brain between your ears.
@@abandonedmuse I use Malwarebytes just for extra protection. It’s not very expensive and I have heaps of extra RAM, so it’s not really hurting anything.
OSX had some issues, especially in the beginning as other commenters have noted, and yes it's obscurity helped it..however being a Unix system meant that you still had safe guards like password prompts, this is a far cry from the world of windows where you could have a Trojan install in the background without even knowing it

I was never big on the whole Mac vs Windows debate. However, I found that my maxed out, straight from factory 2016 MBPro still runs better than most laptops I’ve used in the last 6 years. Yeah, I've got a Pro because of a state program I was part of......They let me keep it because, by the time I left the program, it was a few years old....I remember quite vividly the tech guy basically giving me a gentle warning on this matter.....Yes, they're less susceptible, but that doesn't mean they're *immune* to viruses. A couple months later, he and I were chatting and he cheerily brought up how he found one on someone else's Pro.
Mac and Linux are not really safer than windows, the only reason why there are more viruses for windows is because it is the most popular operative system, so its a better target for hackers.
I think Mac is generally better EXCEPT when it comes to a large variety of apps. For example, I play a lot of video games and I use a lot of obscure software, so Windows is a better fit for me. However, for my mom who pretty much only uses the built in apps in Mac OS, Mac is a better fit. If there's nothing you'd be disappointed about being prevented from doing in Mac OS, go ahead and switch; Mac OS is safer and quite smooth.
Go for it, it's another level when you get used to it. I use MacOS for music production, graphic design, web development and everything else that I do. Only thing I use Windows for is for games. 😊
@@MidnightTheKitten I use Parallels to create a VM to run non-MacOS programs. In particular, most of my online gaming is done like this. You can also Boot Camp Windows in. Albeit, I’m still using a MacBook Pro 2016. My 4TB SSD & 32GB of Ram upgrades make it nearly unbeatable for the mid to high-range gaming and video programs I use. I know with the new ARM processors there are issues with a lot of Windows progs so I’ve been reluctant to upgrade. But for a 6 yo laptop, I still find very little I can’t run.

you're wrong, you mustn't use "of", you should use "in/over the"
if time travelling existed, a cruel prank soemone could play is that they would use two files, Legit screenshots of leopard, and the Virus, essentially play "Virus Roulette" with random people
1:15 I peeped the cigarettes and valentines file on the computer which is such an obscure reference but I just wanna let you know that at least one viewer noticed
NationSquid: Runs OS X Tiger on Ryzen 7
Steve Jobs: Wait. You're not supposed to do that.
"have you ever dreamed of becoming a pilot? well go to pilot school, i cant help you." you should've ended the ad with that
Squid's creating his own viruses now that's how smart he really is
Great video as always. Keep it up.
It’s actually funny how easy it would’ve been to write this virus, probably some high schooler wrote it. Usually an inevitability when you are young and start learning scripting and automation, you start with bulk copying and moving, then renaming, then you get curious if you can mess up you friends files by bulk renaming them. Then you move on to trying out things on the school LAN. I used to mess around at random internet cafes back then when internet wasn’t easily accessible.
Whom ever it is, is probably sitting back laughing at all this while his wife makes dinner and kids playing. Probably has a small and steady SAAS company. Just a shot in the dark
A great video as always! I have a request: Can you make videos about those? Worms: Morris, Hybris, Blaster. Viruses: Fun, Pikachu, WannaCry. If you have others planned, you can make those requests later :)
I remember... The trauma...
1:40 WILL & GRACE FANFICTION ???
Considering the Macs in the computer lab at my university were riddled with macro viruses via Microsoft Word back in the 90s, I never for one moment fell for the Mac hype and knew it was only a matter of time before malware became a bigger issue for them.
The premiere is a 2am for me but Can't wait to watch this tommorow !
wake up
its starting rn
@@fnuibusaja8079 Oh no :'(
Ok
I’ve never heard of Leap, but I’ve heard of other Mac malware.
Mac malware usually doesn’t have a ton of analysis or information about how it works, so Mac malware is still fairly obscure, however, it is still foolish to not have anti-malware software on your Mac and take proper precautions.
I’ve been a Mac user for over a decade, and I do weekly backups to an offline external hard drive and have anti-malware protection.
I also practice good computer security habits, like not executing a file if I am unsure of its source.
While I believe XProtect is pretty robust, it’s only your first line of defense.
Mac malware may be few and far between, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
my dad is one of those 'turn your back and pc explodes' kind. his 2015 mac routinely gets malware like it's nobody's business
@@lucymorrison wait wait, but they definitely get malware. I fell into that trap and it bit me in the ass. Just yeah, be careful.
@@abandonedmuse I use Malwarebytes just for extra protection.
It’s not very expensive and I have heaps of extra RAM, so it’s not really hurting anything.
ok that sponsor wasn't needed to be introduced like that lmaoooo
I love this guy's channel
bro imagine getting toasted by a virus called oompa loompa😂
3:48 fudge! You made a plane pun!😂
honestly i love the whole skeuomorphic thing going on: look at that word doc. i love it.
I REMEMBER THINKING LIKE THAT….then I got a bizarre malware.
16:13 "Giant leap for mac-kind" was literally right there!!!!
It's like how getting your first piece of hate mail means your famous
“I was trying to make some good plane jokes, but they would have flown over your head” I get it.
I seem to remember in the late 80s the Macintosh had a bigger virus problem than the PC.
I know the airplane joke went over a lot of people's heads 😂
“How to take over the world” and the “scary potatoes” 😂
XD
love the cigarettes & valentines reference & 14:05
OSX had some issues, especially in the beginning as other commenters have noted, and yes it's obscurity helped it..however being a Unix system meant that you still had safe guards like password prompts, this is a far cry from the world of windows where you could have a Trojan install in the background without even knowing it
"But you know what's plain right? War thunder!"
*You got one of those words right*
Is no one going to talk about how it was literally named “the Oompa Loompa virus” 💀
I was scrolling through the comments looking for someone that said this lol
"Don't forget to check out War Thunder!" "Dude my friend plays War Thunder already"
Good video, Keep up the good work!
VERY well done video. Loved watching it, and please keep it up. :-)
"Mac doesn't get viruses" well "windows don't get idiots"
Yeah, Mac user here, not all of us are stupid enough to think we can’t get viruses.
macOS is inherently more secure as it requires authentication from the user to install any software and apps can’t access system level control without direct modification to settings from the user. but you still can’t just go around downloading every .app file you find on the pirate bay.
I was never big on the whole Mac vs Windows debate. However, I found that my maxed out, straight from factory 2016 MBPro still runs better than most laptops I’ve used in the last 6 years. I’m not running high end games from this year on it, but I haven’t noticed a single bit of sluggishness with any program - Mac or Windows - especially since I use Win10 in Parallels.
tbf i use to be a big windows user, but ever since i started using linux… god it’s so much better than both of them
@@sapphicgaze Linux is impeccable. All the IT work I do, I’ve tried to encourage admins to use Linux for moderation. The learning curve seems to be over most folx heads
@@sapphicgaze Even the most bloated Distro runs far better than Windows and Mac. And it's exponentially better if you have an old/crappy PC
@@reckermatouvc yea 100%, i had a macbook pro from 2012 and neither the macos or windows partition were able to run, so i repurposed it for kali linux haha
I love my macs. Just got out of windows hell a year ago thank God. I'll never buy another windows box since I no longer work in IT. YAY! I love the beauty of *NIX behind it and the elegance of OSX and the design of the box. Yes, I'm a MacSnob and I love it.
I don't typically watch sponsored clips, but that pun just killed me, had to watch it for the sake of it.
Great video though, loved it!
What do you do if the sponsorship is mentioned at the end of a video?
@@lawndogmoon2 I appreciate creators who keep their sponsorships till the end, similar to Seytonic, I personally watch till the end if that is the case, however, mid-video placed sponsorships I automatically skip.
Next I want you to cover those fake flash player plugins which would effect your computer back in the days when they was not that many people worrying about flash security threats, be worth looking into!
Justin Timbercake and teletubbies cult ritual 💀💀💀
5:05 hol up, wut those specs doin
All the Green Day references and little Easter Eggs... Love it! xD
5:04 I like the edit of showing an actual cpu running an old OS, or did you really do a hackingtosh and run it just for the video?
Can you do an episode on the first virus to infect Windows computers?
This video should be titled “The Very First Mac OS 10 virus”. nVIR was out in 1987.
NOW YOU CAN NEVER EVER SAY THAT APPLE CAN NEVER CATCH A COLD
9:05 Ain’t nobody gonna talk about how bro had a Viking in IChat.(for those who don’t know Leif Eriksson was a Viking
Mac and Linux are not really safer than windows, the only reason why there are more viruses for windows is because it is the most popular operative system, so its a better target for hackers.
I see that you thought your Blue Meanie administrator password is "password". Thanks, now I'm going to have to change mine...
"Because of a concept called security through obscurity"
ooh no,. here we go
6:43 ah yes, flash cs5
So many puns in this video. I love it
You’re telling me that Mac computers managed to stay under the radar for *22 YEARS?*
Man your desktop on your Mac is bringing huge nostalgia waves for me lolz
I have actually been wanting a MacBook Air, even though I have been using Windows I have been tired of it and been wanting to switch to Mac OS X
@@MidnightTheKitten Yeah a lot of apps were meant for Windows. I used Wine Bottler on a Mac OS X Mavericks virtual machine.
@@MCZombie1478 true. For most apps that works but not for a lot of the apps i use unfortunately.
That thumbnail was a heavy Pink Floyd reference.
Also, did anyone catch Green Day's "American Idiot" album at 0:08 ?
Tell Judith to drop that Tiramisu recipe, I'm intrigued
That Oompa Loompa Doopity Do joke was incredible! You're getting a like from me just for that!🤣 (Though the rest of the video is great too!)
